The same people that took Wolf Of Wall Street literally are probably the same people that thought Goodfellas was "Glamorazing criminals".

@@is0sceles dealing with your problems by becoming rich. It's been a long time since I wrote that last comment. I still feel the same way. I have enough money to live on my own and support my family a little bit. The idea of solving your own personal problems by making a lot of money is very dangerous, at least in this context. It's one thing to improve your life or improve the life of the people you love by getting a Good job, But it's another thing to have the mentality that You need to make a lot of money to be happy. I want you to deal with your problems by becoming rich as a very black and white statement. It assumes that the person who manages a food store or a restaurant or a grocery store isn't happy, And if they only had a lot of money and made a lot of money with someone like Jordan, they would be free of problems. That's just not true. They would have new problems. They would need to buy new things to constantly make them feel worthy. They'd constantly be competing with other people who are doing better than them financially. For me, that's not a life I want to live. And I know that more money doesn't equal more happiness. It might equal more comfort. Maybe more convenience. But I'm not impressed by any of the materialism that comes along with it. Have you ever been to Memphis? You should go. There are a lot of musicians and people there, black and white alike, but you can tell don't have a lot of money. It also looks like they make enough to get by. They are some of the friendliest people I've ever met. They do just fine. So do I.

A peasant would be a tyrant if he so had the choice. The reason people support characters like Jordan (and even Walter from your profile picture) is that they embody the philosophical aspect of "The Shadow". All of our darkest desires and wants, given form. You may publicly denounce Jordan for his actions, but it is highly likely that given the chance, you would do the same. I, for one, applaud his lifestyle. Being an Objectivist, and a bit of a Nihilist, I don't really believe in morality or traditional concepts of "good and bad". I believe that an individuals moral duty is to further it's own goals and ambitions, regardless of what is seen as "evil". A man has no responsibility for the happiness of others, and neither they to him, so for a man to think "is this a good thing to do" is illogical as long as the action benefits himself and his happiness. He achieves his happiness at any cost, and others do the same. Jordan embodied this nicely.

These fallen characters being likeable is a theme in more than one Scorsese movie. It's noted directly in Goodfellas, "Jimmy was the kind of guy who rooted for the bad guys in the movies." The joke being that everyone watching the movie is also rooting for Jimmy and the crew.
Same thing here. Belfort is a piece of shit who destroys many peoples' finances with his actions, but he is still likeable if not lovable, almost like he's leading us in his cult, all the way up until his meltdown where he socks his wife and tries to run off with his daughter. That's the only point where it's made clear to the viewer that despite his charisma, he's actually a bad person.
Patrick Bateman is just an unreliable narrator and a psychopath. He's likeable in an awkward way, and I'm sure that's intentional, but I don't know if a broad audience would receive it as well as in this movie. He's not likeable in a highly charismatic cult-leader way though.
But go ahead, continue on with your ingenious analysis that Belfort is very bad man. Is he orange too?

For the most part, I feel like this is a shallow view of the film, in that it barely even qualifies as an analysis. It feels more like a quick thought after watching the film. At the same time, it feels like an OVER-analysis of the film, trying to figure out why Scorsese made certain decisions that don't even affect the story.
The things this video got right:
    1) It is a satirical look at how society views the rich.
    2) ...That's pretty much it.
This film has nothing to do with how the rich view minorities. If that's what you took away from the film, that's your opinion, and you're allowed to have it. And the reason there are no black actors in the film is because it is based on a true story, and in real life, none of the people that the film is based on are black. Scorsese didn't "tap into something that the 2013 society hadn't even thought of" by not casting any black people; the political discussion of race was alive and well at that time. All he did was make a film that authentically portrayed the real people upon whom the film is based.
Like I said before, this is a very opinionated review of the film, more like an afterthought on the drive home from the theater. It's not an "analysis" per se.

This is exactly how I've defended this film when it comes up in conversation. Scorsese is not glorifying Belfort. He is showing us that we do that already as a culture. He is showing the naked American Dream. And forcing us to be honest about our ideals. The last shot of the film turns the movie screen into a mirror. We are all those people begging to be rich like Belfort. Longing for the sex and drugs and money. This is your precious capitalism. How do you like it now? You say it's too long, too vulgar, too mean, too nude, too high. Well that's what you voted for.
    The thing I love about Wolf of Wall Street can be neatly summarized like so;
"Nothing is easier than to denounce the evildoer; nothing is more difficult than to UNDERSTAND him" - Dostoevsky
As clearly callous, selfish and base many of Jordan's actions within the film are, Wolf of Wall Street wants you to take a certain voyeuristic joy in it all, because it never wants you to forget how easy it is for anyone to give into those temptations. There is no comforting distance between you and Jordan; if things went differently in your life, you might have BEEN Jordan.
Scorsese doesn't stand over your shoulder doling out judgement to the characters on screen, because in real life there is no story or message to watch over your life to reward you for doing good and punish you for doing evil. When the time comes for you to choose between what is right and what is easy, nobody will be there to condemn you nor forgive you besides YOURSELF.
You think the Jordan Belforts of the world need to be held accountable? Then do it yourself.

The video was spot on... except for the forced personal political opinions. The simple fact is (coming from someone with different views for Trump), Trump is not the political embodyment of corporatism. Rather the opposite. Trump's policies represent economic nationalism - the rejection of a globalised world and the placing of a higher value on domestic companies.
I disagree with Trump and his views, but if you're going to comment on him (which was totally unnecessary in this video), at least do it accurately. It is evident that there has been little research into Trump's actual policies and you are simply taking anti-Trump propaganda, and what you think you know of the man prior to getting involved in politics, and displaying it as fact.

This is an interesting take on this movie I have always thought of this movie as more of a tale about addiction and as you said greed, about excess and inability of give it up. I mean he sees the end coming as the cops move in and is just so emotionally tied/ addicted that he cant give it up, even though it causes him the to lose everything. The other thing is at the end I think Scorsese taps America as a land of rebirth but with a twist of maybe only for the rich?

Your comparison of egotistical rich white men, Belfort and Trump have nothing to do with the satirical aspect you are trying to show the viewer. It seem to be a blatant attack on Trump. Scorsese's major MO for his whole film career has been exploring the darker parts of human nature. Why did no one complain about the main character in Goodfellas having no regrets? I love this film. Leo is on top form, the script is still funny 20 watches in and Marty always manages to make a movie beautiful and interesting. This film shouldn't be taken as an endorsement of the life style. But the links to trump are baffling. They are nothing like each other. Jordan and trump are so far from each other in so many ways it's actually mind numbing that you say it so much. This isn't holding a mirror to trump and trumpian politics. It's a mirror to the American dream. Jordan fulfills everything that is the dream. The whole film, from the way its shot to the length is a lesson in excess. Jordan outsmarted the world when nobody wanted to work hard and we all wanted to get rich quick. He held a mirror to what the dream had become and tells it through the eyes of the principle character. This greed fest is genius. But it has nothing to do with trumps America. You wanna know why they shot the argument outside the trump Hotel? Because its essentially made of fucking gold. Where else would a self proclaimed 'money crazed little shit' be living. And then look at the framing it allows, and the consistency of colour from Margot to the gold. And tanned lightning. Compared to a girl who cuts hair. This other woman is literally hanging over them and especially her. What can a woman who 'cuts hair' do in the face of that. You have a nice voice but I really think you're yet to nail your writing, maybe get someone to help as you leave a lot of points flat or don't finish the thought. The same with the man from Uncle video. You make a statement or show a clip and then don't follow it up with how the clip displays your point. And sometimes it's not obvious. And it's pretty astonishing that you only spent about 2 seconds looking at the back end of this movie. We remember the chest beating but not the Jordan stealing his kid and crashing into a wall outside his garage. It's not even satire. The message is pretty obvious, it's a warning a take to put fear in us. Jordan, like in the book, tells us a story. The last shot of the film fucking proves it. This man went to prison and yet look at everyone on the edge of their seat. The dream of greed went on. The film is telling us to stop.

Satire goes over perhaps most viewers' heads, and it's not just an American phenomenon, but a worldwide one, as well. Take for instance the movie Mean Girls. A lot of viewers took the film literally and were either offended or impressed (to the point of wanting to be like the Mean Girls) by the characterization of bullying in the film. It seems that the root of this misunderstanding is a fault in critical thinking and in the education required to get a viewer to appreciate film beyond the surface or literal story. Maybe it's because the most viewed films are still watched merely for their entertainment value, while at the same time many films feed viewers what they should think while watching instead of posing thoughtful questions that force viewers to reflect.

There is something missing from most people's understanding of satire. It is not simply about humorous representation and exaggerations, for the sake of entertainment. Satire is an ingenious way of stating why something is a joke. A joke that is not funny at all when it is truly understood, as it critiques human nature. It critiques the way that we think, the way we act, the way we treat each other; the bad things that are innately within all of us to one degree or another. All great satires do this, yet many people do not acknowledge this core element of it. Satire is one of the most sophisticated forms of social commentary and arguably one of the most misunderstood.

So many people misunderstood Wolf of Wall Street and thought of it as glorification of excess and wealth. And Scorsese tricks you into celebrating Belfort. But only if you think about it, you realize, that exactly that is the problem. We celebrate this lack of morale and ethics. That is what good satire does, it makes you reflect about relevant things by actually entertaining you. For me, the most powerful scene in the movie is, when the FBI agent sits all by himself in the subway, reading about his success, and nobody really gives a sh*t, although Belfort frauded so many regular people. He is (or was, he served his time) a criminal, but people don't see him as that. And that is saying something about our society.
