- From “Toy Story” through “Toy Story 4,” Pixar has revolutionized animation in its nearly three decades of existence. Each new movie requires new technical innovations. “Monster’s Inc.” helped them create fur, “Ratatouille” helped them create wet fur, and “Finding Dory” led them to create an octopus from scratch. In “Toy Story 4,” which comes out June 21, they updated Bo Peep, created Forky, and made perhaps the most realistic-looking cat you’ll ever see in animated form.

This video just made me realize how old these movies actually are.
Every time I see complex numbers like at 1:30 I have to do some math for curiousity's sake
The film has 114,240 individual frames. If each frame took anywhere between 45 to 1800 minutes to render, the average of that is 923 rounded up. Multiply those and the total number of minutes it took to render is 105,443,520. That's a pretty big number! But this works was split amongst 117 computers working nonstop. So divide 105,443,520 by 117 and you get about 901,227.
Now as a little side math that will help: there's 1,440 minutes in a day, 43,200 minutes in a month, and 525,600 minutes in a year
Since 901k is a pretty big number, it's clear we're gonna need a year number here. So divide our 901k minutes by the minutes in a year aaannnddd….
901,227 / 525,600 = 1.7 years
Accounting for error, rounding up, etc it took between 1.5 to 2 years Just To Render this movie. Thank you all you brave artists who deal with rendering cause that shit's exhausting

i'd love to see pixar "remake" toy story 1 using their new tech, just so we can really see how much of a difference it made beyond just comparing the first movie with the last one
@yasahiro hotaru so remastering a game is stupid too? the reason i said they should remaster 1 is because you can't properly compare the two because they are inherently two different movies, but if you remade 1, then you could have side to side comparisons of the same scenes, aswell as the fact that they could add new stuff if they wanted to since the tech has evolved so much. sometimes you can remaster something simply because you have better tech than when you first made the product, especially considering its been over 20 years now, so having a fully accurate remaster would be really interesting to compare it to.
and why do you get to say if its a waste of time and effort? if the staff at Pixar want to remake it using their new tech, then they should be able to, you don't even know if it even would be a waste considering it doesn't even exist, nevermind the fact that you aren't a staff there and that i'm just stating that i'd wish they did, its not as if i'm the one in control and can force them to do it, and i honestly don't expect anything like that for several years yet, if it even happens at all
@hotarou yasahiro you realise how remaking movies appeals to adults with nostalgia and kids who like Toy Story? And by appealing to both of them, it makes money, which doesn't make it a waste of time as it paid. So weeb, *your points are stupid.*
Lmao I love it when I read replies on a comment and people are having arguments and one person gets verbally destroyed so much they delete their comment
@@bloodprince9779 (1 month later but okay - sry for bad english) Its not the same remaking a movie than remaking a videogame. For example, Resident Evil 2 Remake took the original and improved its graphics AND mechanics, adapting the controls to make it easier to play in this generation. Not is the case with a movie, where you don't have an 'old' type of gameplay ( in this case the tank controls in the original RE 2) that makes the experience harder to enjoy. if you go to see Toy Story 1, it's still perfectly enjoyable, and remaking it would not only make the original "obsolete", but also wouldn't be more than a simple cashgrab like the remake of The Lion King. Toy Story 4 is perfectly valid for comparing how much animation has improved between these years.
Bloodprince original ones are always the best no matter how bad they were. Theyre awesome because they’re nostalgic, they remind us of our childhood, remaking it is just stupid while they can make new better ones. That’s the thing about animation industry, they move foward and get better each time, they dont go back to redo something. If I use that logic of yours, should I go to the museum and ask them to replace the antics with something better of this century? Theyre precious because they’re proof of how things have evolved to this stage, how they got better and it needs to be the one and only not to be faded away by some remake uh idk maybe because it’s called a CLASSIC?

ToraydoBull Honestly that is crazy. I was 8 years old when the first one came out. I’m now 31 years old almost 32. What the heck!
I remeber seeing it in theaters at 8 years old.
@@ToraydoBull Actually Pixar movies don't really take that long to make, according to Tom Hanks it takes 4 and a half years to make one movie, the reason why they take so long to come out is because they're working on other movies at the same time and they have to get those out before Toy Story.
@@jerelminter 4 and a half years is still a very long time for a film that's only 1 hour 40 minutes long
The cat/dog comparison shook me so much, in my mind the graphics were the same
In my memories, the first Toy story looked good but now I just laughed so hard when I saw the dog. It looks like there’s only sort of a normalmap of bump map for the fur. But wow it looked really good for a 1995 movie.
I think this video underestimates the rain scene. The cat was amazing of course -- but when the movie starts, the rain drops looks so real that it was mind-blowing.
I believe they were not allowed to reveal that scene. But it was indeed awesome though.
The whole movie is CG.
It was so real that I thought I entered the Anabelle hall
exactly. at first i thought those scenes are real until i deeply look at the house then realised that's animated. i just amazed by that. also the chandelier light scene in the antique shop. i just love it.
Yeah
the rain scene at the beginning of toy story 4 looks absolutely mind blowing
TheReal KingJ ikr I couldn’t stop focusing on that when I first watched it
Yeah
Toy story was too revolutionary for us to realize the graphics were quite shity in the first one
And honestly for a lot of stuff. I had rewatched Tangled and realized how far animation has gone. When I watched that movie for the first time I was blown away by the graphics but I realize now (it was still really good) just how far they’ve come
“24 years after the original was released-“ WOW when you put it like that
This just made me appreciate Pixar that much more
honestly finding nemo is so impressive, like the cgi still looks beautiful watching today
It really does! The animation holds up better than even the following few Pixar films after that!
Wall-E too
Toy Story 1 will always be my fav animated movie
Makes me sad in a way bc I grew up thinking that was one of the best movies I ever saw. And for people to criticize the older ones makes me upset bc that's my era.
Sid's dog is an actual demon but no one in the neighborhood acknowledges it, they just keep the holy water on hand.
Imagine seeing him again... afraid of dolls like a normal human being. I imagine he joined some rock band guitar things, he seems like that kind.
Dang that dog tho
@@Ravera_gyxhe became a garbage truck driver. However, he does listen to music.
I remembered the dog looking like this : 🐶
Not like this : 👹
LMAOO 😂
Oh believe me, he always did look like that.
Me too
You have to admit
1995's animation was incredible for the time. I was born in 2000 and i grow up thinking toy story was 2002/2004 movie 🤔
I don't know why but this video kinda makes me emotional.
Good Dinosaur backgrounds:
Am I a joke to you?
Inside out lighting
THANK YOU
difference between incredibles 1 and 2: baby got cuter
lol
And yet, no one is talking about Dash's hair 🤣
FineDecision elastic girl got thiccer
Architectural surfaces and furniture were vastly improved. The way Evelyn and other characters moved, sat, and stood was more life-like than previous films as well. The biggest achievement was probably the lighting though.
FineDecision And also the new look on Tony
Agnes Tang omg tony was stiff as hell
Am I the only one who finds the dog opening its eyes from the first film extremely creepy and disturbing? I get chills looking at it and I can’t believe I never noticed it before 😂
