Since many places are sold out if elastic, you can always use, ponytail holders, elastic from the waist part of leggings/pjs, old cami straps, old bra straps, those straps to hold bedsheets on, possibly the edges of old fitted sheets, etc.

I used card stock to print the "denim" mask pattern. I've made many patterns using poster and then hold the pattern firmly on the fabric to trace around it with either pencil or pen. It saves pinning the pattern to the fabric and wearing it out, when using it over and over again. I've been a seamstress for 50 yrs.

Thank you for sharing this video, very helpful! Please try to use latex-free elastics or rubber bands if you are donating these masks to hospital workers. Regular elastics are made of natural latex, which is a sap from the hevea tree. About 17% of healthcare workers are allergic to latex because of the gloves they wear and their symptoms can worsen if their skin is in contact with latex. It’s a cumulative allergy, like bee stings, so the symptoms can become severe overnight when you’re exposed to latex. Once you develop this allergy it’s for life and there’s no treatment or cure. It’s best to avoid wearing latex / NRL gloves too if you can. The safe ones are NITRILE or VINYL gloves. Stay safe 🙌

When I tried to narrow some elastic I had, it kept fraying along the cut end, releasing the rubber strands. Instead, I ran a zigzag stitch along one edge, then cut it just beyond the other edge of the stitch, so it bound the cut edge and kept it from fraying. I narrowed some 9.5mm wide elastic with a 4.5mm stitch down each edge: i.imgur.com/VphN2SN.jpg There can still be some fraying, but it stops at the edge of the zigzag.

The only exposed areas were the tips, & they are enclosed in the duct tape I used to keep the ends from poking. Like most people, I just tried to make do with what I had. I made a loop so both ends met in the middle, & I wrapped that bit. I'm still refining, so any tips are appreciated!

Silver Wrapture Creations, thanks for the info. I couldn’t remember what material my wires were made of and had to ask my husband if he knew (he’s handy and does the occasional welding). He experimented with his torch and found that it was neither aluminum nor steel as they have a higher melting point. So far, I've made a 2 layer, 3 layer and 4 layer mask. The 4 layer is very thick and awkward to wear. The sides bulge open instead of resting on the face. The 2 layer would probably be fine if you can maintain plenty of social distancing. I'm currently using the 3 layer at work (essential retail) and have found that it molds well to my face. The more layers the better, but wearability matters.

    Very effective homemade masks:
A mask can be made from a large plastic bottle so that it not only protects your mouth and nose, but also your eyes. You cut off the top and bottom of the bottle and then cut it lengthwise to open it. If you wear glasses, you can make two holes so that the things that the glasses have that go behind the ear (sorry, I do not speak English and I do not know what they are called hahaha) come out of the mask and you can put it on. If you do not wear glasses you can glue the top to a hat or tiara. These types of masks are very cheap, but most important: effective, because they isolate your entire face so that you not only do not get the virus, but also not accidentally infect other people.
After you used this kind of mask, you can clean them and use it again, this does not happen with the chinstrap because after a while they absorb droplets of saliva and they no longer work.
Well I do not know how many people read this comment but I hope it have been useful to someone.
Sending you good energy from the other side of the world!! and stay at home as much as you can!!! 💕🇺🇾

You won't have a mask worth using if you use pins. Everything is small enough for you to handle without pins. Pins will leave holes in the fabric and render them useless against a virus. And ALWAYS start any type of this project with a mask on, clean, washed hands in gloves if you plan to donate them to a medical center. It really matters.

The masks should not be placed via the head band if you work in the health care setting. The rational for this is because the head band will more than likely be contaminated from the original face mask placed on the headband. A clean mask should be worn only one time, for one task to ensure cross contamination doesn't occur. The elastic bands will come in contact with the buttons on the head band, You should keep clean masks separate from your "dirty, used" masks. In addition to making these face masks for health care professionals, I have been a nurse for over 30 years. Thanks for your excellent tips on making these lifesaving masks
