I can't stop coming back to this video. I know it's largely a joke about how people get stuck in their own heads about their problems, but the ending feels so poignant when Buzz realises he's not the only one going through it. I love it so, so much.

this is literally my favorite kind of video. it starts off on a silly premise and makes a bunch of jokes, but then out of no where slaps you in the face with a beautiful ending that makes you feel so many emotions. love ur stuff Joel.
In the end, he had all these wishes, but deep down, he just didn't want to miss out and be alone. Having a freind that knew what he had been through and experienced it, and stood by him was enough.

there should be another toy story movie where Andy is a lot older and is starting to suffer from mental problems and even develops schizophrenia. this in turn causes him to see life sized, anthropomorphized adult versions of all of his favorite toys that follow him around and talk to him, similar to how Wilfred followed around Ryan. And everyone else just sees a wagon of his toys that he cant stop dragging around and his toys are trying to help him come to terms and let go of them.

This video is a beacon of cinematic quality. It's just do well done. It's such a silly little premise but it's so deep, and feels so pensive. And the cinematography at the end is fantastic

Though Joel has funnier shorts, to me, this will always be his magnum opus. A truly magnificent work, for no other reason than the sheer breadth of emotion it covers. Laughter, dejection, triumph, despair and grief, a profound loneliness, all coming together at the end with a sense of bittersweet serenity.
I love the aside on the Estonian woman just to say it wasn’t important anyways lmao. And “I wish I had this store’s ability to move on” is such a mood.

Indeed, the 30th stands for our childhood when everything is real and "intense" and after some time, after our teens, we tend to "sleep" during the years together, taking them for granted. The moment they die is when we wake up, we realize e missed the time together. The dead friend on the floor is the people who we ignored when they said to spend more time together. The parade is the regret, living in the past (tho that's the most obvious analogy). And, of course, the yoda guy is the person who we find who can relate to our regret. The costumes symbolise the inner child and once you connect with someone else's inner child, you create a bond like no other.
This is all rubbish that I made up because I'm alone for Christmas.

Because it wraps its weirdness in very effective visual storytelling techniques designed specifically to evoke those feelings in the audience.
Because it shows his true talent as a story writer. I hope to see Joel writing full story features in the future. But for now yoda holding hands with buzz will do for me.

I kind of put myself in his shoes, but as my younger self. If I had slept through Halloween and my best friend got hospitalized, I'd be severely depressed. And then the ending, seeing another person missed Halloween... this shit really fucked me up.

That was some beautiful cinematography there at the end with the sunset. Great use of shadows and light. I especially enjoyed the way the light shined through the translucent parts of the Buzz costume.
