Genndy Tartakovsky's Clone Wars mini-series fills in the gaps between Episodes II & III while leading directly to the opening scene of III. The miniseries was canon (until officially overwritten by Star Wars: THE Clone Wars full series/movie), with storyboard approval from George Lucas himself.

Q: What's Yoda riding? A: A kybuck. Typically too small for riding, this kybuck was a gift from a princess. As Jedi are discouraged from keeping possessions, Yoda considers this kybuck his friend rather than pet. He has never named it, calling it with the Force from the garden beneath the Temple.
Q: How many ships are in orbit? A: LOTS. Various sources give different estimates & there is no canon number. All credible sources taken into account I think it's safe to say that the space battle involved no less than 2000 capital ships & well over 2,000,000 starfighters. While the number of capital ships on either side were initially about equal, half of the defending star destroyers were immediately destroyed in the surprise attack. The defending starfighters were outnumbered approximately 11:1.
Q: How did the CIS fleet sneak in undetected? A: Darth Sidious gave the CIS the location of a secret hyperspace lane through the galactic core unknown to The Republic. This allowed the CIS fleet to enter orbit directly from hyperspace, destroying hundreds of Venator Class star destroyers before they were able to raise shields & jamming all communications to prevent reinforcement (which Republic forces eventually overcame).
Q: This seems foolish, why did they make this attack? A: They were never meant to win! General Grievous had no idea that his master was the very Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine he had been sent to kidnap. On paper, at the time, this would have seemed like a bold but potentially devastating move. The vast majority of the multi-million star destroyer Republican fleet & nearly the entire Jedi Order had been goaded into thousands of fights spread thin across the galaxy. The attack was timed to take place shortly after a State of the Republic address, guaranteeing that most, if not all of the government would be in town. Republic propaganda said the war was all but won. Ostensibly Sidious claimed the assault & kidnapping was intended as a terror attack that would sow fear & chaos in the capital while shaking the public's faith in the Republic. In actuality the operation served four purposes - First, it decimated the heart of the CIS fleet. They'd never recover from the loss of so many important ships, making rebellion after Order 66 more difficult. Second, an investigation was about to reveal Sheev as Sidious; the attack served as a distraction to allow the investigators to be assassinated & evidence burred. Third, it gave Sheev the appearance of being an unflappably brave leader, boosting his popularity while assuaging Jedi suspicion of him. Forth, and possibly most importantly, it provided an opportunity for Anakin to murder an... unarmed... foe, sending him further toward the dark side.
I've edited out the scenes from an offworld subplot with Anakin Skywalker & Obi-Wan Kenobi until they get the call for support from Mace Windu. I then edit in the opening dogfights over the city from Episode III up until Anakin, Obi-Wan and R2-D2 board General Grievous' Providence-class dreadnought, Invisible Hand. This is effectively the entire Battle, short of a fight with Dooku and the emergency landing back in the city which I removed at the request of Disney.
The live action sequences are from fellow KRplusr, Kyro91's "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith - Battle over Coruscant Remastered" in which Kyro91 has edited several cuts, changed the color of certain objects, increased the rate of weapons fire and added sound effects among other things. A great improvement over the studio release imo and far more in line with the feel of the animation.

I know right! This short animated series manages to do space combat better then almost all the movies
I’m trying to think about what you’re referring to as naval combat? The movies showed cannons that could be fired like broadsides but that was a venator and most of its major guns would be on the side or underneath as it was a carrier and it’s top side was for Star fighter deployment. Other SW ships had guns on the top and maneuvered to fight with their strong sides be that underneath or on top. They weren’t specifically broadsides fights. Hell in ep 1 the nemoidian transport ship was reconfigured to literally be an invasion ship and had guns covering every angle as well as a compliment of fighters. 2 all they had were acclimator troop carriers and 3 mainly was the battle above the planet. And in that one there were literally ships in every direction at every level. The only reason to make yourself a target with a large cross section is to do what they did here and evacuate a dying ship to a new one. 4 didn’t really have large ship to ship combat neither did 5 and I’d say 6 didn’t fight like they were on the water either they didn’t show much in the way of ship 2 ship combat but they weren’t all on one plane either that I remember.

I actually had this question posed to me by a coworker. Chainsword or lightsaber? It’s relevant because; could a lightsaber cut through a chainsword? Worth noting because if a chainsword is lightsaber resistant, then it’s a hard yet still kind even fight, if not it’s totally one sided.

Even though there are many moments particularly in The Clone Wars where his attempts don’t make any sense. In Shadow of Malevolance arch Padmé was told by Palpi that she should go by the unaware battle to establish peace amongst the separatists. This should be an obvious move of why palpi would even do such a thing. If I survived that I would immediately be asking a whole lot of questions and even present doubts to the senate over palpi’s emergency powers. Maybe even start pacts amongst senators of different planets to not allow just one man control the known galaxy. Its pretty stupid considering how limited clone numbers were when a galaxy can have millions of planets...
Wouldn't have gotten that power at ALL without Darth Jarjar the Unseen...

At least her death is finally canon. Thanks to Season 7 of Clone Wars.
That isn't a death, it leads to her first RotS death, before that was rewritten to be in the March on the Temple, but that was cut too, however her dying at the hands of Anakin would end up in Episode III, Chapter 5 of Lego Star Wars: The Video Game and that level's re-release in Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga (now incomplete) before the writers of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed moved her death into the era of that game, as she commits seppuku after being defeated by Starkiller. Her final, canon death is depicted in the TV series Star Wars: The Clone Wars (as TFU is now Legends EU [EVEN THO TCW IS ALSO IN LEGENDS? WTF?]) in a vision of Yoda's where she is, indeed, stabbed by Darth Vader in the March on the Temple ("Voices" Season 6 Episode 11) as depicted in the cut scene in the Temple in Revenge of the Sith.

I love how this show respects BOTH the good guys and bad guys. It doesn't make the enemy stupidly weak. Like Grievous's Guards are actually competent and hold their own against Jedi as they were meant too. Unlike in 2008, makes them look stupid. And we see clones die too
The deleted season 7 made a few good scenes with Magnaguards, is sad we never see those chapters completed

This entire miniseries is still one of the best Star Wars anythings ever made. The epicness, attention to detail down to the sound effects, the characters and their development, the knowledge of lore, and the overall presentation is on a whole other level. This is still the origin of Grievous' cough that I prefer. This is to the prequels as Rogue One is to A New Hope.

One thing I love about this version is that it shows you an idea on the true scale of the war that others just doesn't bring. Everything seems so small and localized in the clone wars etc, but this shows thousands and thousands of ships spanning across an entire planet and the amount of troops and droids there are.

I love Dave Filoni and adore his work, but his depiction of General Grievous was without question one of his greatest mistakes.
I do agree that filoni’s grevious is nowhere near the power house or absolute beast that this one is but when watching 2003’s grevious and revenge of the sith’s grevious. They are completely different for good reasons but different nonetheless. And filoni’s grevious better reflects the grevious we see in the movie.
It's more fault of Lucas than Filoni, I mean, Lucas has this kind of vision, like you know, more like a villian who escapes, and that vision was the reason why Tartakovsky had to put that scene of windu breaking the general's torso, and well, filoni was more near of what Lucas wanted to the discontent of the fandom

It was actually because his character had not been fleshed out before the animated series had started. So the writers of the show had free reign to make grevious as dangerous and menacing as possible. Unfortunately they decided that his character was too similar to Vader so they made him more cowardly in the films and stuck the scene at the end of the show where windu force crushes his chest to explain the cough in the films. Shame really would have loved see grevious be more of a threat than the coward he was written into.
Because of what happens to him near the end of this video. Windu uses the force to crush him. Grievous is dangerously fast and able to dodge other force-attacks (as seen in this video) but Windu is scary fast and uses "darker" powers like this.

After all Shaak-ti's moves weren't that bad practically...lets just think about how much droids the Separatists lost on that occasion, and that Grievous almost let the victory seep out, and he still ended with a crippled chest...
The interesting thing is that her character is repeating such goal over and over again, but in different patterns. Like, it's just hard to find ANY story in which she just retreats and lets some troops take the damage alone. I just cannot think about anyone now. This is just a strong definition about character traits.

Genndy is one of the few directors who actually got the basic scene formula to Star Wars. Something I think has been lost since things like GoT made story telling by speech often a focus of the movies and TV shows. But here it very much follows the format of talk is used simply as a connector between scenes and that the action itself is how we learn of characters, emotions and thoughts. Very much akin to a concert v a dance and the best of Star Wars has always been dance and not singing (bless and rest Carrie's heart).
I love how over powered Yoda, Mace, Grievous and the Magna Guards are in this series. I always found it funny that Yoda, the grandmaster of the Jedi Order, seemed to struggle when lifting a pillar in Attack of the Clones after the duel with Dooku. I expect Yoda to move ships with ease like in this show.
