omg... you guys purposely send the herbal jelly right!! xD Literally no one in singapore eats that as a snack! Unless you're from the older generation like 50s onwards. Because it's super bitter!! I LOL-ed knowing this must definitely be a joke to see their reactions haha

Well, seeing this video reminds me of my good memories when I visited Singapore. I’ve visit Singapore about 20 times. I live in Korea so it takes about 6hours of flight to go there. But even the time that I sat in plane was a pleasure to me. Even Singapore is not a big country, There are so many things to enjoy. I used to visit hotel near the station called ‘common wealth’. I’m planning to visit there next month. That will make my 21st visit to Singapore. This time I will try those snacks!

Pleasantly surprised to see this video, you even took into consideration Singapore's national day. There are tons more snacks in Singapore from all cultures. What they've just tried were the expensive ("atas" is the word!) snacks of Singapore. Maybe one day I'll send some truly authentic local ones!

@@solitarelee6200 you just aren't allowed to eat haha. Selling gum is a big no no too. (there is this misconception that you can't consume gum in Singapore, that isn't the case, many of my friends eat it, but you aren't allowed to sell it)

The guilingao is usually served chilled, and to mitigate the bitter flavor some would use honey.
lol! honey is definitely a must. can't stand the texture without honey too

Herbal jelly tastes really good and is slightly sweet usually. Maybe you got the wrong brand?

@@thejofs4638 I suspect that might be the case. A little honey or sweet syrup goes a long way in alleviating the bitterness.
the brand they're eating is garbage. should have them try Eu Yan Sang herbal jelly.
It's usually accompanied with honey as its too bitter for some.
Nah the real herbal jelly is bitterish in taste its not sweet

You're supposed to eat the turtle jelly with syrup, it balances out the bitterness. It's really good. *knowing my Chinese food well

I laughed out so loud cos I was literally eating a herbal jelly when you guys brought it out.
and technically it's not turtle jelly, it's their shell, but it is not used in many herbal jelly products sold in the market. it's usually packed with Chinese herbs instead, hence the more appropriate name: herbal jelly.
I absolutely love pineapple tarts. Every Chinese New Year my mom will have to buy extra boxes just for me alone. Ive never got tired of it as she always handpicks the best ones. It comes in different shapes and sizes, degree of flakiness, level of sweetness and the depth of sinking my teeth in the buttery pastry.

Yes because we are a melting pot of cultures, and at one point had a merger with present day Malaysia. Malaysia was our country 's name during the merger. Malaysia has a "sia" because of that. Hope that this helps you understand the Malay words! Plus our national anthem is in Malay too so ya.

FYI, there are 4 major races in Singapore: Chinese, Malay, Indian, Eurasian. The national language is Malay and it is also one of the country's 4 official languages. The national anthem, composed in 1958, is in Malay called "Majulah Singapura" (meaning "Onward Singapore". All Singaporeans, regardless of race, learn to sing the national anthem since young.
