Recently we went to the South in the US and had our eyes opened to a bunch of amazing new foods, but there was one thing that we really wanted to introduce to people back home!
So we got the help of a London-based cook from the South, and brought authentic Biscuits and Gravy to a British High School!

As a Texan, I appreciate the fact that no matter where you go, you choose to seek the authentic food experience that locals would offer. It is so rare when youtubers actually put in the effort to do the research and not just make assumptions. Love y'all so much, Jolly!

We do eat our biscuits with jam too. YOu can have a biscuit chicken sandwich wth jam/jelly for breakfast. It's not just biscuits and gravy. Additionally, ice tea with lemon and honey is a southern drink that is also nice.

As an American, hearing the kid say the biscuits and gravy are better than beans and toast and then everyone acting like that was a controversial statement had me rolling 😂😂😂😂
I've lived here in the UK for a few years, and let me tell you, these people are adorably obsessed with their beans on toast. It's actually what we would call "pork and beans" out of a can. And the grocery stores have a huge selection of canned beans for just that purpose. I have tried it, but I am sorry to say, I am NOT impressed.

I was thinking they were gonna love it. There’s almost nothin better than homemade gravy and biscuits!!! My moms gravy was not like this but I prefer the white sausage gravy.
Southerner here; when the kids were initially apprehensive I smiled and said “Just wait”. Awesome seeing these young men experience and enjoying great food from another culture for the first time.
as someone from NJ who spent a few years living in southeastern Louisiana, i had to learn that southern food cannot be judged on its appearance. a lot of nasty looking stuff tastes phenomenal down south
Down here in the south, we call it comfort food. It's a grandma making a meal for the whole family Sunday morning, and everybody gets thirds before she sits down to her plate because she's gonna make sure everybody's got food. Y'all bringing tears to my eyes with this.❤

So true. My great grandma made Sunday dinner (lunch) every single week for my family until I was in my 20s and I'm not sure I ever saw her eat anything. She'd just sit there and smile while everyone else ate.
I am a Southern American. Some years ago I met a British man online who was horrified at the idea of putting gravy on biscuits when I mentioned it. I tried to explain what American biscuits and sausage gravy are but he was still skeptical. I promised to make it for him if we ever met in person, and long story short I eventually did just that. Now, we've been married for almost ten years. I'm sure he married me for the biscuits and gravy.
Bet it was more than that. You showed conviction, and prevailed against skepticism. Truth wins out. :)
Awesome. When an American can convince a skeptical Brit to try something that sounds so unappealing as sausage gravy (aka chopped up ferret) and biscuits and they find that it tastes better than it looks they can't do anything but ask you to marry them, LOL ! I'm not a Southerner but do like gravy and biscuits. Although, I prefer chicken fried chicken w/gravy or make my own version of SOS using white gravy and chicken on toast. Never cared for the taste of chipped beef (we had that growing up as kids). Too salty so I substituted leftover cooked chicken.

JOLLY, I keep coming back to your vids for comfort & laughs. I'm from the South & seeing the high schoolers eyes open wide & hearing mmm ALWAYS plasters a big grin on my face! These young men have a special place in my heart. In today's tumultuous times, your videos are a brief sanctuary & I thank you for that. When you compare our comfort food to a warm hug it's like you're giving us a hug! You guys should be British Ambassadors to the US! The confusion about the nomenclature for American biscuits comes from the dish’s history. Biscuits are a modernized version of hard tack, which people in the American frontier called “biscuits.” They called it that because (like an English biscuit and biscotti) hard tack is baked twice. American frontier people’s used this as a method to preserve it. One would typically make a large quantity of biscuits/hard tack and then soften it with a liquid or sauce when ready to eat. This method of preserving and preparing biscuits/hard tack is what developed into the dish Biscuits and Gravy.

Tactful understatement is a British cultural tradition.
To be fair to the young man who wanted some jam, there are a lot of people who prefer to eat their breakfast biscuits with butter and something sweet like jam, jelly, or honey. I’ve found that biscuits are basically great no matter what I’ve put on them.
I prefer my biscuits with butter and a good jam, but I think perhaps the Southern part of the US prefers the gravy. I never took the gravy on biscuits..lol

As an American who hears our food trashed on by other Americans and some people from out of the country so often (and agreeing with the vast majority of the negative comments) it was very heartwarming to see people from across the world loving something so simple and common here. I’m from the south - Mississippi. This whole meal is a staple. I was laughing with delight at how much these kids loved it all.
I love that for years, Josh and Ollie have been mocking the concept of ‘biscuits and gravy’ in random videos. They try it, and liked it so much that now they are trying to convert others 😂
To be fair, those kind of gravy isn't really common outside of the US. I can somewhat understand why it looks a bit off compared with what we usually think of a gravy's appearance.

@@Josua070 Your absolutely right the reason it received such a negative reaction in hearing about it is because they were basically imagining cookies with brown gravy. Then to pile on that white/country gravy doesn't exist there whatsoever gives little cause as to why a mysterious lumpy white liquid is actually good. Not to mention while most comparable to a scone an American biscuit is still very different from them, meaning if they had ever tried a white gravy on a scone it would have been an entirely different experience.
@@Josua070 That sausage gravy is actually a bechamel sauce, which is one of the mother sauces from France. It's called "gravy" because instead of using traditional butter, meat drippings are used.

Australian here. My old man has done a lot of business in America and he always tells me the same thing every time we have a BBQ "no one does BBQ like southern USA. They don't cook sausages and their BBQs. They cook 9 course meals with salads, sides, starters, entrees, mains and desserts all on the BBQ"
And we got the stomachs to show for it! 😅
It's so true. We will BBQ and deep fry anything. I love it.
That's not just the south anymore. Just about every decent cook has a smoker and with a little help from KRplus, we've become pretty good at smoking meat
I moved from the South to the Pacific Northwest. Overall, I like it much better here... but damn do I miss the BBQ. I have yet to find a place in my area that even comes close to what they have in the South.
@@MrClickity, not sure where in the PNW you are, but there's Dickey's BBQ Pit in Tacoma. When I lived in Seattle over 20 years ago, my roommate and I drove to Tacoma specifically for BBQ and I believe we went to Dickey's. They had the best fried okra; super crisp, not slimy, just perfect.
I agree you can't beat the BBQ places in the South, but at least there are some decent substitutes for when you get a hankerin'. 😉

Yup, Buttermilk Biscuits are for soppin'. That is why biscuits (or toast) is served with eggs, to sop up the yokes. Eggs cooked "side up" are the best, lots of runny warm yokes.

As an American Southerner I really appreciate these young men and their great manners. By the way, we usually split the biscuit open, into two halves then add the gravy.

This is so funny I have made all of these things at home. I literally made a pitcher of sweet tea this morning for the day. I can get all of these things from at least 120 places in my county. I lived in England and I think the biggest difference is that they don’t cook with much flavor. Absolutely minimal spices, not a ton of fat (for flavor). In general, it’s fairly bland. So when they eat our food I think it’s a flavor punch in the tastebuds!

@@prisonerofthehighway1059 Yes, I know and I think I've seen a video where somebody (maybe Josh and Ollie) ate at that guy's restaurant so yes, PROBABLY pretty good. But something about that video I saw, if it's the same guy, just gave me a feeling there were compromises due to being in a place where real American ingredients might not be available (can you say hot dogs in jars?).
@BTinSF biscuits are just flour, butter, and dairy. The sausage is just pork and spices/herbs. Both can be done at a high level pretty much anywhere in the world.

I can't drink sweet or flavored tea, only unsweetened black tea (or oolong, sometimes green tea is okay). I have a sweet tooth, but tea is not something I enjoy sweetened.

My husband's family is from WI, while I'm born and bred in the south 😂 and we have to remind his extended family when they come that they should get "half and half" tea when we go eat 😂.

As a southern American, I can say that the kid that said "your food is weird and nice" encompassed the southern food scene perfectly with that statement. Southern food is weird, but it is very nice! These videos are so fun to watch!
It was really cute, lol. I mant to see them try a Midwestern food. We have Wild Rice Hot Dish up here, and it’s one of those foods that can compete with New England Clam Chowder, Southern Jambalaya, and all the other great American regional foodstuffs.
It’d be hilarious to see these kids eat Jambalaya, though, too. They’d probably experience every emotion known to humanity lol

I found this video on accident and I’m so glad. It’s so cute and fun! I loved watching them try new things and seeing the differences between countries. I got a little educated on some things as well. Good job on the video! Would love to see them try more things! And maybe see some American kids try food from there too! 👍🏼🙂
We do also put jams and jellies on them as well. And of course chicken/sausage/eggs/cheese/butter/bacon.
The biscuits, sausage gravy, and chicken all look perfectly prepared. How are these kids supposed to go back to beans and toast? Also, hats off to Mr. Smith for allowing this demonstration in his school. He should be proud of his well mannered students.

I live in the South too (Louisiana), and I love biscuits and sausage gravy. My father-in-law loves coming down for a visit, because he makes sure to get his biscuits and sausage gravy. Their manners about how good it is (these boys) is refreshing

As an American, I can say that obnoxious behavior is present accepted ages in all countries. For example, people here making collective statements about all American teenagers.
There's also plenty of idiocy running rampant, such as these same people being somehow baffled that people they've already decided are horrible not being respectful to them.

Typically southern "gravy" is just flour and pepper in water, really bland and almost flavorless. Go up to the upper midwest and enjoy sausage gravy made with well seasoned Italian or polish sausage. Northern Sausage and gravy is fantastic, southern is generally a disappointment.
@@Steve-tl7zo I grew up in the Swamp of Florida, and I cannot tell you of any occasion in which our "gravy" didnt have pepper, sausage, and other things in with it. There is of course, White Gravy, which is what you described, but there is also "country gravy" (which is the traditional way of serving biscuits and gravy.)
Texas here and our gravy has flavor. Not just flour pepper and water like dude described. He just doesn't know 😂

Thanks guys for sharing our biscuits & gravy across the pond. I usually serve two cut in half with plenty of gravy on a side plate with a traditional egg breakfast. Over time, (I am now 70) I only have a half biscuit, 1 egg, 1 sausage, 1 bacon, 1 slice tomato. Otherwise I would be rolled around in a wheel barrow.

I am from North Carolina in the south east united states and we pretty much invented sweet tea, fried chicken, biscuits and gravy. Pretty much fried everything... So awesome to hear you gents like our southern foods.. FYI its best to open the biscuit in half and then pour the gravy over top of the open part, soaks in much nicer and better flavor. Cheers..

@@hobgoblin6551 Don't add too much water! They're better when they're thicker in consistency, and with a decent helping of butter. I personally like them with a little bit of sugar or maple syrup, but that's just cause I usually ate them as a breakfast food as a kid. They're really hard to mess up - most online recipes have got the right idea - and it all really comes down to personal taste. I call what I mentioned above 'sweet grits', cause you're only eating them with some sweetner involved. If you're wanting to pair it with something, though, like fish or chicken, I'd recommend looking up cheese grits recipes!

It’s mostly the sugar in the sweet tea that’s the problem. Everything else is good as long as it isn’t made with the sawdust-level nutrition that the mass-produced fertilizer-forced 365-farmed wheat consists of. Many farmers spray glyphosate to desiccate crops faster at harvest time to increase crop yields by up to 30%. Makes for crap nutrition AND flour full of pesticides, which is why so many Americans are “gluten intolerant” without being Celiac.
There’s a good reason many American farm products are not allowed to be imported by some European countries.
The bankers and government agencies working on their behalf who control the food industries force farmers into short-sighted decisions that make slightly more money but are terrible for a sustainable, healthy society. But don’t worry, when you get sick, they own the pharmaceutical companies also. Just a coincidence.

@@leechild4655Cream gravy is just gravy. Sausage gravy is cream gravy with sausage in it. Idk how you’ve not seen sausage gravy on menus at restaurants because that’s where I usually see it. It’s normally served at breakfast where as regular cream gravy is served with chicken fried steaks.
