    2:39 about the needless double letters. The swedish langauge is a pitch accent language much like some asian languages are known for. Meaning that if you pronounce for example the word "full" and "ful" the same way, you are either calling someone "ugly" or "drunk". We distinguise between words and the pronounciation with the double letters. They are therefore only needless to english people.

      @@li_tsz_fung Yes. A vowel followed by a double letter is short. A vowel followed by a single letter is long. There are exceptions but they're usually dialectal or loan words. For example there's a popular brand of spring water (named after a geographical location) called Ramlösa. It ought to be pronounced with a long vowel but a lot of people pronounce it as if it were spelled Rammlösa. Another example is the word "men" which has two different meanings. It's mostly used as the Swedish word for "but", and is then pronounced with a short vowel as if it were actually spelled "menn", but it's also an archaic word for "injury", and is then pronounced with a long vowel.
      Long story short, Swedish pronounciation makes no sense.

      But pronunciation changes a lot. Naturally, people want to speake faster and easier. Or they have more contact with other ethnic group.
      Dialect also appears for the same reason. They live in different place. People can't travel easily in the past, maybe they never know which way of speaking is more common in the country.

    A little explanation regarding the marshmallow gnome candy. In Sweden (and Scandinavia in general) there are these small gnome-like creatures, called Nisse (singular). Back in the day, they supposedly lived on farms, which they watched over. They could bring good or bad to the farm, depending on your treatment of it. If you were nice to it and fed it porridge, it would bring you luck, but if you were mean to it, it would do the opposite. Nowadays, they are usually a bit nicer and mostly associated with the winter/Christmas season.

    • @TheNilsbuss
      @TheNilsbuss 년 전 +8

      just a small correction, they are generally referred to ass "tomte" or "tomte-nisse"

      @Emsev100 년 전 +2

      The english version of them are gnomes. 😉

    • @Djuuugarn
      @Djuuugarn 년 전 +9

      Thea is mixing things up a little bit here which is why Im chiming in with some extra clarification… 1 tomtenisse or several (tomte)nissar (theyre almost always referred to as Tomtenisse/Tomtenissar) is/are in short Santa’s little helper(s). Nisse without the prefix Tomte is most often just used as a nickname for someone called Nils, which is why you almost never use nisse (singular) for one of Santa’s little helpers without the prefix tomte, making it tomtenisse. Nissar is more commonly used because its shorter and easier. You also dont refer to multiple guys called Nils as Nissar which is why nissar can be used without the ”tomte” prefix.
      Garden gnomes are called ”gårdstomte/gårdstomtar”, ”gårdsnisse/gårdsnissar” or ”hustomte/hustomtar” (singular/plural). Very rarily you might hear someone calling them ”husnisse/husnissar” but its so rarely done its hardly worth mentioning. Unlike Santa’s little helpers whome are always jolly, helpful and kind, a garden gnome can be kind, evil, mischievous, benevolent, malicious, insidious or pretty much any other characteristic. Their personalities can shift dependant on mood much like us humans. Regardless of their personality traits theyre usually seen as caring towards the farm and animals. ”Usually” being the key word here. In the days of old they could be blamed for fires, droughts, animals/humans dying and other unpleasant events. It was not uncommon leaving gifts and food outside to appease the garden gnome(s) so that theyd be happy and helpful and not do bad things. However, having 1 or more intelligent, potentially evil little beings (whom according to some possess supernatural powers) roaming your farm in the shadows or just beyond the corner of your eyes is obviously a dreadful scenario, and one you cant very well tell your children about. Which is why when describing garden gnomes they been portrayed in a more and more positive light over time.
      It seems I have run off on a tangent here…
      Oh well, point is the foam candy called julenissar (I guess the translation would be chrismas gnomes, but youd call them Santa’s little helpers) or skumtomtar (foam gnomes, or rather foam santas). Tomte can mean both Santa Claus and gnome, Santa Claus is called Tomten or Jultomten, but he is no gnome.
      The candy is most commonly referred to as juleskum (christmas foam) which is a much more preferable name in my opinion as saying it doesnt put the image of eating gnomes or Santa Claus on my retina…
      Anyways I’ll shut up now. And if youve read all the way here; You have a great day and dont worry about whats sneaking around your garden, whats peering in through the window, whats hiding behind the sofa, whats lurking around the corner of the doorway, or what crawls out from under your bed as you turn your lights for before going to sleep… What was that sound you just heard? Im sure it was nothing…

    A barely related drink:
    1 dl of salmari (salt licourice with Koskenkorva)
    0.25 dl of fresh lemon juice
    0.75 dl of a carbonated tonic of your choise (I prefer Sprite)
    Handful of Turkic Peppers
    Break the Turkic Peppers until gravel like. Mix the tonic and lemon juice together and add the Turkic Peppers. Let it rest until they have dissolved. Add Salmari. Done. Looks like a poison tastes wonderful.

    As a Swedish person I just love watching people eat djungelvrål and then suffer 😃😃😃😃

  • @pamelaleannefreeland9025

    Ollie, here’s a tip on your Rock Paper Scissors game. I noticed you both often throw the same thing first go (usually rock or paper); and then, the second time around, josh goes off of what he thinks you will throw next. Try to pick the exact opposite of your natural instinct to throw next is, and I bet you’d win more often. Also, throw the same thing twice in a row, something you usually don’t do. Throw him off! Lol (Personally, I try to stick with rock and paper as much as possible, and then throw in an unexpected scissors when necessary.) Keep him on his toes, Ollie! Lol
    On a more serious note, I truly love watching you guys. It’s obvious how close you two are- more like brothers than best friends and coworkers/co-creators. Family is so vitally important, and your chosen family, in many ways, are even more special- if you are fortunate enough to find those special people. You two being so close and for so long, I’m certain you have had your fair share of aggravation, annoyance, and even anger and hurt. But, please remember that no matter what happens in this life, family is forever. If they love you, support you, encourage you, challenge you, and make you a better person and the world a better place for you to live in, then you are two incredibly blessed men. Thank you so much for sharing yourselves with us complete and total strangers here online. You may not know us, but I feel as though I’m getting to know, respect, and even have love for you guys! You truly bring joy to this world, and boy do we need it. I know I certainly do, now maybe more than ever. If I ever would get the chance to speak to you guys personally, I’d feel so honored and overjoyed to finally get to introduce myself to you and tell you in my own voice just how much you guys mean to so many of us! If you ever decide to do an episode surprising fans of the channels (yes, I love both 😆) by calling or video chatting with them, I’d not only be willing, I think I’d actually die! 😆 I know you guys are busy, and probably won’t ever see this, especially now realizing that this is indeed an older episode, but still wanted to send out some love and appreciation for all that you do and, more importantly, for being the genuinely good, kindhearted people you are. Sorry for the long post. It’s been a kind of rough day (and year for that matter) and I guess my emotions are on full display. Hope I didn’t make you fine English gentlemen I’m uncomfortable. I know how much the British (culturally) just love us sappy, long winded Americans. So apologies, if appropriate, from little old Jackson, Ohio, USA. 💜💜💜💜💜

    Super simplyfied Swedish grammar: If there is 2 consonants after a vowel. The vowel is hard. Plopp would not have enough ploppiness.

    I'm half swedish and everytime we go over to visit family we only pack the minimal amount so we can maximise the amount of food we can bring back.
    My siblings are in the army and the only stuff they ask for in their post is swedish food such as Bilar.

    As a Swede, I constantly have to remind myself we put like 18 times the salt in food other cultures do so they're not used to the massive amounts of salt we use, except other Scandinavian countries of course :P

      and especially as contrast to American tourists who are used to US brands pouring tons of sugar and sweeteners into not just candy, but also other consumables and food, bread etc. Coming here to try our "sweets" isn't always as sweet as they expect xD And liquorice especially for some reason always divides opinions, but most Scandinavians love it

    Hahaha love seeing people's reactions to Djungelvrål 😂 it's one of my personal favorites (Swede). But if you think that's salty you should try SvenskJävlar. As I said, I can finish a bag of Djungelvrål in a few minutes but the first time I tried SvenskJävlar I wrinkled my nose almost as much as you did in this video 😂 now I love it though

    This video randomly popped up in my recommendations and I'm so glad I clicked on it because I laughed so much that tears were streaming down my face and my partner even came to check on me because he thought I was sad and crying for some reason! 😂 I'm a Swede who doesn't enjoy salty liquorice btw. I can eat it but find the taste bad. Sweet liquorice is one of my favourites however!

      As they said, liquorice is like marmite: you either love it, or you *loathe it with every fiber out your body and want it banished from earth for all eternity and cast into the pits of hell from whence it came* (guess what I think).
      There is no middle ground. You either love it or hate it. There's no in between.
      We Scandinavians are renowned for being pretty hardcore with liquorice.
      Which, unfortunately, means it's even more polarized.
