I feel like we don’t give Ollie enough credit for his Korean- he could understand pretty well what was going on and being said and was able to respond semi-coherently. Well done Ollie!
Yes it's funny to mock him but honestly if you're not either really determined, great at studying by yourself, or forced to, it's very hard to learn a language without school. Just learning grammar once in a while with nothing else takes you nowhere. So the fact that Ollie can understand and get his point across with single or two word sentances is much better from where they started. Gabie and Josh have been studying languages their whole lives, and always lived in a place that speaks the language. They both speak at least three languages almost fluently, so it's like a polar opposite rather than something realistic to compare to. Many people sit at weekly language lessons at school for years and still can only introduce themselves.

This is how I do it! As soon as I started learning Korean, I just started mashing together sentences that I thought sounded right. Didn't matter if they were actually correct, someone else will correct it for you 😂

I think that might actually be the correct way to teach Ollie or at least encourage him more. I mean all those teaching him Korean videos are usually hard to watch but his Korean seems to not be as bad as it looked like (I myself speak no Korean so I can only judge by the provided subtitles and context).

encouragement for ollie: 8 months ago when this was first released i had to rely on the subs, now i got through the whole video basically understanding almost everything. we're all improving with time!! i honestly wouldn't have been able to do that without constantly watching jolly & korean englishman among many other korean content. you're honestly already better than me; in two years of self study i've only just learned how to comfortably read & write hangeul while you're out there alone in korea and surviving. i could never lmao

Tbh I was actually really impressed with Ollie's korean skills here. I mean: he was able to do a conversation and understood everything quite well. This actually really motivated me to keep practicing!
I am actually impressed by Ollie. I learned Spanish, but that is such an easy language to learn because of its many similarities. Korean is so different than English that they are not even in the same language family. Usually when you learn a foreign language, you notice similarities, and the closer it is to your language, the easier it is to learn it. Not only Ollie had to learn from scratch, he is also dyslexic, which makes it so much harder.

Most people learning a new language can understand more than they can speak.
You can also somewhat understand an unfamiliar language better when you're drunk.
I am the opposite. I can speak French better than listening to it because the French people speaks too fast.

I’m learning korean and I can understand a lot more but when it comes to replying in a grammatically correct sentence or knowing the right vocab words it’s when I struggle. The amount of content you can absorb makes understanding easier

It really helps improve your speaking skills if you're forced to do something like that. It's actually really great. Even if Ollie makes mistakes Josh and other people just correct him and he can learn this way. Also, no one judges him and just keeps encouraging him and so it's not even scary to make mistakes in such environment. I wish I could talk and practise my Korean like that as well.
