You are told all about her and her history and then the curtain goes up and she is hanging there right in front of you. It truly is a very emotional and breathtaking experience to see her suspended above you up close. The most awesome machine the world has ever produced. An icon of our time.
Atlantis has always been my favorite and I'm glad she got to stay home at KSC. My dad worked the shuttle program and now works Artemis. My 5th birthday I got to spend the day with astronauts while my dad was awarded with a Silver Snoopy. It's such an honor to have my whole family be a part of the space Industry. While I no longer work for there myself, I'm grateful for the opportunity!
I just can't imagine the feelings these astronauts have traveling in rockets!!! I felt like crying watching this. Not because of fear, just the absolute beauty of that rocket & the BRAVE men inside it. I mean it's just so unbelievably incredible to make such a piece of art & have the ability to control/operate it too. Just blows my mind!! I watched the ascent of Columbia before this launch video & was reminded of how beautifully dangerous these missions are so i mean seriously my heart goes out to all the soldiers & astronauts & law enforcement out there who put their lives on the line everyday😘😘😘
I consistently keep up with space missions all the way from Brazil, and out of all the incredible events, the rocket launches stand out as the most awe-inspiring. What an incredible country the US is...from the early Saturn V to the Space Shuttles....just the most spectacular awe inspiring feats of exploration. I hope they continue to wow people into awe for generations to come. Watching these videos with tears in my eyes at the boundary busting grandiose projects of exploration....huge affection from England to the US...YOU ARE AWESOME!!!!
I'm back watching again in 2023 this is a really nice post I'm going to watch it with my 6year old grandson here in England so sad to have lost some brave souls during the shuttle programme BZ love and respect from a royal navy veteran here in England.xz

I was on a plane back from The Republic of Georgia, after doing a joint exercise with their military in 2011 and saw the last shuttle launch of the NASA program from the aircraft. STS-135. It just so happened to also be the Atlantis shuttle shooting through the sky. It was the most amazing thing I'd ever seen, and, to this day, it still makes me think that I could've maybe been an astronaut instead of a Marine. Honestly though, I think I would've loved to do both if possible. Watching this video, even though not the same launch, made me tear up a lot. We were mostly sleeping, and the captain came on the intercom, quite loudly, and told everyone we were about to witness something that won't ever happen again. Told everyone to look left, out the portholes, and look at the lower cloud cover. Out of nowhere we saw a missile like object just flooring it through the clouds. It looked like it was a mere 10 miles away, but we were flying into Bangor Maine and were well over 1000 miles away. The plum from the boosters was massive and within 10 seconds the shuttle was gone into the upper atmosphere. After it disappeared the captain said that we had seen the last launch of NASA's space shuttle program and that's why were the luckiest people in the planet at that point in time.

@@letmetellyousomethin9410 Balloons can't fly that fast, that high, carry that much weight, can't travel 740 miles (1,190.91 km) and burn that much fuel in 8 minutes, not even a poor try on your part, just simple incompetent mental capacities, and a lot of flat earth indoctrination for +ons. But you people don't even read or watch the videos, just listen and understand what you can, and make up the rest in your own tripping heads. You can clearly see the Shuttle is on its own, and burning fuel from internal tanks, so there's no additional tank or attached objects you can call balloon. And FYI balloons can only go up as high as a max altitude of 50 km, where atmospheric is as dense as helium normally is, and after that, near vacuum atmospheric conditions will make the helium burst the balloon. Helium is the second-lightest element known, so there is no possible way any balloon can go above 53 Km (top record), and no balloon that can go higher and travel faster than wind speed has ever existed, and specially not where there's no air.
I never saw a Shuttle launch or land but I do remember hearing the boom when Columbia flew over Santa Barbara on the way to Edwards in '81...what a treat. I can imagine what being there in person must have been like! I was so sad they never flew from Vandenberg..!

Probably one of the most exciting moments of my life was to go from the U.K. to Florida and get the opportunity to stand with people from all over the world to watch a shuttle lift off. The vibration in my legs and chest and the lovely people around me made it exciting but extremely sad moment to see one of the last shuttle launches as the space program for the shuttle came to an end. Lots of emotional people at cape canaveral base. The Americans have terrible tv and fast food but my god they pulled the stops out when the first shuttle lifted off in the 1980’s . I was down in Florida in 1994 for environmental sampling of some of the older launch pads. Since I had a pass, I was able to drive to the viewing area, the closest you could get without being mission control or the press and got to watch the shuttle go up. It was day time but once the shuttle was clear of the steam cloud, the flame was really too bright to look at with the naked eye. It was a nice to be on-site during one of the launches.
It was an awesome launch. It very very hot and windy that day. It almost did not go do to the wind. I was fortunate enough to see it in person. and was suppose to be Atlantis’s last flight. It flew one more time before it was retired.
The Space shuttle was a beautiful machine , I can watch the space shuttle launches over and over and loved the watching the B747 with Space Shuttle piggy backing on it , a beautiful sight , the rockets that are used these days just don't have the same appeal ,maybe today's rockets are more advanced and fuel efficient but I really care to watch those launches.
It's truly amazing all the steps to launch a shuttle. Other than the moon missions...all the launchings of the shuttle is an American miracle. Beautiful!
Still gives me the same thrill at age 66 as it did watching the Gemini flights take off on a TV sceen in my elementary school audtorium at age 10. I was fortunate enough to be working in Washington DC when one of the shuttles was being flown on the back of a 747 to Dulles airport, prior to the start of the Shuttle Program. Seeing that plane with the shuttle fly past our building, almost like I could reach out and touch it, was a something I will never forget.
What a terrific documentation of a shuttle launch. Without fail, I still feel like a 10 year-old kid every time I watch any of the launches, whether live or recorded. They're all a truly awesome sight to behold!
I’d put the SR-71 Blackbird up there with them. Hands-down one of the most incredible and powerful machines ever flown, and never (to anyone’s knowledge) once pushed to maximum throttle because it would have gone too fast to keep itself together.
Space shuttle Atlantis it was so nice seeing it left off but when I was in Florida I got to see space shuttle Columbia liftoff because a lot of people had the highway blocked and I got to see it from the highway that is the most spectacular waiting to see a shuttle lift on in Florida
Simply put.... AMAZING. I'm almost 40 years old and Space has always fascinated me and I'll never get use to seeing such great talent in all fields do what they do.
Boy, I can still get teary eyed watching shuttle launches. I feel blessed that I was alive during the shuttle program. It was a wonderful time for NASA and all Americans. Thank You Jonathan for sharing this video. It was nothing short of Amazing.....
9:32. . . I LOVE how just after main engine start, the whole thing visibly STRAINS upwards against it's restraints, with a kind of groaning sound and you can see that it's barely being held down against that tremendous force.
This is the best launch video I've ever seen. I get tearful every time I see it. I watched Shepard launch into space and right back down again in my 6th grade classroom, then John Glenn orbit and watched Neil take his first step onto the moon as a newlywed. I have not missed a launch since even though they quit being a huge event on TV. I was watching the "Teacher Launch" live though and then when Columbia broke up on reentry, and they were no longer routine. Thank you for this and thank you Atlantis. I am now a grandmother 6x over.
I cried watching this. I was there at the launching. Imagine 100 billion human beings have roamed the earth, everything we have ever known in the history of mankind has been on earth, and I am part of the lucky few to witness human beings exploring outer space. What a special group of human beings who work at NASA and are able to have the intelligence to do such acts. USA is the greatest empire in all of mankind.
I was at Kennedy that day too! It was my first rocket launch ever. What struck me the most was the awesome sound! It was an odd mix of jet plane-like roar, peppered with explosions which sounded like dynamite going off in the roar! It was AWESOME!!!
I'm American, but we are humans every single one of us. Everyone bleeds the same let's be proud of being human, having the will to risk billions of dollars, tons of manpower, and the brave humans who put their lives on the line just to advance us. It's that curiosity and persistence to explore that makes humans special. It's ingrained in us, irregardless of where you were born it's just in our genetics. NASA is compromised of people from all different nationalities just with a common goal. Even during the Cold War when we here in the United States and those in the Soviet Union were willing to vaporize either nation at a moments notice with nuclear weapons there was a mission, not well known unfortunately but it was beautiful, the Apollo - Soyuz mission in 1975. The Apollo capsule from the USA and the Soviet Unions Soyuz capsule docked in space and they boarded one another's spacecraft. Despite our severe differences on the ground, up there, there are no boarders, we look different and speak different but they got along because under all the bullshit we are just humans and pioneers and explorers doing what humans do. Risk life and limb to push into the unknown and discover. That's all of us it's in our genetics from millions of years of evolution, I hope we get spaceflight cheap and available enough that one day people like you and I can experience it. I watched this many times. Im very much fascinated and amazed the lift off of Atlantis shuttle in the outer space. It's a breathtaking to see this video how a rocket was being lift off to the space. Salute to the dedicated and hardworking NASA astronauts, pilot, engineers and technicians.

@@nirbhayatiwari5425 No, you are wrong. The STS stack had 35 MN of thrust, and the Falcon 9 has 7.6 MN of thrust. The space shuttle is even more powerful than the Falcon Heavy (around 17MN). Idk where you got your numbers from, but mine are from wikipedia. Also convert to imperial yourself. The two boosters alone produce roughly 24MN of thrust, which makes them more powerful than falcon heavy. But the RS-25 engines on the back have much less thrust then the falcon 9 (of course, its 3 engines vs 9 engines, even though Merlins are not as powerful).

Shuttle was old, outdated jobs program with no future and should have been cancelled after sts3 when the realization of 1.5 billion per launch. It was never reusable, only semi refurbish able. It never lived up to any of its promises. The most dangerous manned rocket in world history. Biggest mistake in US Rocket history.

The Space shuttle was a beautiful machine , I can watch the space shuttle launches over and over and loved the watching the B747 with Space Shuttle piggy backing on it , a beautiful sight , the rockets that are used these days just don't have the same appeal ,maybe today's rockets are more advanced and fuel efficient but I really care to watch those launches.

It's truly amazing all the steps to launch a shuttle. Other than the moon missions...all the launchings of the shuttle is an American miracle. Beautiful!

Still gives me the same thrill at age 66 as it did watching the Gemini flights take off on a TV sceen in my elementary school audtorium at age 10. I was fortunate enough to be working in Washington DC when one of the shuttles was being flown on the back of a 747 to Dulles airport, prior to the start of the Shuttle Program. Seeing that plane with the shuttle fly past our building, almost like I could reach out and touch it, was a something I will never forget.

I’d put the SR-71 Blackbird up there with them. Hands-down one of the most incredible and powerful machines ever flown, and never (to anyone’s knowledge) once pushed to maximum throttle because it would have gone too fast to keep itself together.

Space shuttle Atlantis it was so nice seeing it left off but when I was in Florida I got to see space shuttle Columbia liftoff because a lot of people had the highway blocked and I got to see it from the highway that is the most spectacular waiting to see a shuttle lift on in Florida

9:32. . . I LOVE how just after main engine start, the whole thing visibly STRAINS upwards against it's restraints, with a kind of groaning sound and you can see that it's barely being held down against that tremendous force.
This is the best launch video I've ever seen. I get tearful every time I see it. I watched Shepard launch into space and right back down again in my 6th grade classroom, then John Glenn orbit and watched Neil take his first step onto the moon as a newlywed. I have not missed a launch since even though they quit being a huge event on TV. I was watching the "Teacher Launch" live though and then when Columbia broke up on reentry, and they were no longer routine. Thank you for this and thank you Atlantis. I am now a grandmother 6x over.

Incredible effort putting this together. Man sure miss the shuttle program but space travel has to keep evolving somehow or someway.
I cried watching this. I was there at the launching. Imagine 100 billion human beings have roamed the earth, everything we have ever known in the history of mankind has been on earth, and I am part of the lucky few to witness human beings exploring outer space. What a special group of human beings who work at NASA and are able to have the intelligence to do such acts. USA is the greatest empire in all of mankind.
I was at Kennedy that day too! It was my first rocket launch ever. What struck me the most was the awesome sound! It was an odd mix of jet plane-like roar, peppered with explosions which sounded like dynamite going off in the roar! It was AWESOME!!!

Even though I am not an American, I feel proud with the advancement in technology ,prowess & sheer will Americans have displayed.
I'm American, but we are humans every single one of us. Everyone bleeds the same let's be proud of being human, having the will to risk billions of dollars, tons of manpower, and the brave humans who put their lives on the line just to advance us. It's that curiosity and persistence to explore that makes humans special. It's ingrained in us, irregardless of where you were born it's just in our genetics. NASA is compromised of people from all different nationalities just with a common goal.
Even during the Cold War when we here in the United States and those in the Soviet Union were willing to vaporize either nation at a moments notice with nuclear weapons there was a mission, not well known unfortunately but it was beautiful, the Apollo - Soyuz mission in 1975. The Apollo capsule from the USA and the Soviet Unions Soyuz capsule docked in space and they boarded one another's spacecraft. Despite our severe differences on the ground, up there, there are no boarders, we look different and speak different but they got along because under all the bullshit we are just humans and pioneers and explorers doing what humans do. Risk life and limb to push into the unknown and discover. That's all of us it's in our genetics from millions of years of evolution, I hope we get spaceflight cheap and available enough that one day people like you and I can experience it. If you have Netflix definitely check out the inspiration4 mission that just took place we are going in that direction. Best wishes in the future brother!

@@nirbhayatiwari5425 No, you are wrong. The STS stack had 35 MN of thrust, and the Falcon 9 has 7.6 MN of thrust. The space shuttle is even more powerful than the Falcon Heavy (around 17MN). Idk where you got your numbers from, but mine are from wikipedia. Also convert to imperial yourself. The two boosters alone produce roughly 24MN of thrust, which makes them more powerful than falcon heavy. But the RS-25 engines on the back have much less thrust then the falcon 9 (of course, its 3 engines vs 9 engines, even though Merlins are not as powerful).
If America does something, it does the best programs in the world 🔝

Shuttle was old, outdated jobs program with no future and should have been cancelled after sts3 when the realization of 1.5 billion per launch. It was never reusable, only semi refurbish able. It never lived up to any of its promises. The most dangerous manned rocket in world history. Biggest mistake in US Rocket history.
