This was my wife’s favorite song. She said it was our song and it was. The night I proposed to her, at an Italian restaurant at dinner with friends. I had the manager play this for me over their audio system. In the middle of the song, the lights dimmed in the restaurant except the ones around our table. I stood up and got down on one knee and asked her to marry me. She said yes and all the patrons applauded us. We had a beautiful 16 years of love and life together. I’m so in love with her still today even. Sadly I lost her to a drunk driver accident in 2003 after 16 years of marriage. Still today when I hear this song it is a reminder of our love and the torture that she was taken from me so brutally. I love you, Paula. Now and forever.

You are so very lucky! I was born in '97, way too late. I did see Journey back in April of this year but it wasn't the same. I would give anything to see the original and many other 70's and 80's bands.

Music in last 15+ years doesn’t even compare. Journey and Steve Perry are prime examples of how great music is.
To be able to hit every note as pitch perfect as the studio recording is just insane. On the very last note SP looks like he's just climbed Mount Everest. So beautiful but heartbreaking that he sang this thousands of times and now at 74 he almost has to whisper when he speaks. He gave his all to us yet some ppl want his back with Journey still. 😢

I have read that most all of Journey songs famous from a Steve Perry, Arnel songs in lower keys than Steve did. And Arnel hasn’t sang as many concerts as Steve Perry, even though he has been with them 15 yrs. You can look up and add Steve Perry era concerts. Steve sang more than any of their singers in his 10yrs then returned in 95 to do the Trial by Fire album too.

Saw them in 1986, and yes, Perry sounded fucking amazing. He really was "that good" live. The whole band was for that matter. Just a shame Smith and Valory weren't on that tour, but Jackson and Baird were awesome as well. I give props to Pineda for filling those shoes, but they are already taking everything down a half step for him as well. Age isn't kind on the voice, but you only get something like Perry for a brief and magical time. Thanks to the RRHOF for finally waking up and inducting them.
Had the good fortune to see Freddy Mercury perform in Berlin during their 'It's a Kind of Magic Tour ' back in '86. Good times, five from the front. What an absolute voice! Would have loved to heard Steve (Perry) sing too. That would have been a double whammy for sure...

It might be unusual but I listen to this song because it brings back good memories when I was 14 and 15 and a feeling of safety
I remember going on trips with my family and my dad would play this song from Washington to California and then to Nevada, In a year we moved to different places, Those were days I wouldn't worry about anything, And I was happier Now I'm 17 and I wish I could feel that again
This, my friends, was a real singer with a real voice in an incredible real band. The fact that Steve pumped out the tremendous energy and with the stamina that he did, without fail, night after night, on the brutal tours Herbie put them on for all those years back in the day, deserves the highest praise. Voices like his come along only rarely. For those who continue to knock this man in favor of Arnel or whoever--you can shove it. This guy was the original (I did not say the first) singer who made this song and band truly famous.

I’m not sure what Steve’s inspiration was for singing this song, but he tapped into an emotion that made this into a moving piece of music. Music like this doesn’t come along very often.
He sang all of those songs with extreme passion. He is a big romantic.
He was visiting a cancer hospital, he set eyes on a patient and felt a conection. He asked the staff to have her email him. She did two weeks later. They went to lunch and hit it off. He fell in love with her spent a year and a half with her until she died of breast cancer. very sad.

Steve Perry was just as compelling to watch live on stage as he is to listen to, particularly with this performance of Open Arms. He poured every last drop of emotion into any song he sang with Journey. A class act.
I totally agree. He had the most charisma of any lead singer I saw in concert in the late 1970s-early 1980s. I saw him in an arena of 10,000 people and I felt like he was singing to me.

This song makes me melancholy. I think back to my boyfriend (now husband) and i waiting in the car before we went in to see the movie "Heavy Metal " and this played on the radio. We were probably around 18 at the time. Still together after 40 plus years and this song still makes me think of him.

One of my favourite singers, who in my opinion deserves to be in any list talking about the greatest voices of all-time. The way in which he floats on those A4s-B4s without shouting or screaming is just legendary, and he nails the tenderness required in this song with such ease. He is The Voice indeed.
Head voice has the same timbre as his middle voice....amazing
What does that mean?
In an "untrained" voice, there are two distinct ranges - head and middle. You are trained to balance the two so they are a continuum. Meaning, the middle is of the same "color," weight as the head voice, which is generally lighter and brighter - no perceptible breaks or changes. Sorry if the explanation is a bit much. Hope it's accurate - I'm digging out classical voice training from college 1986.
