The strange case of Elizabeth Sullivan [True Crime Documentary]

- When Elizabeth Sullivan was reported missing in the Autumn of 2014, the San Diego police suspected foul play.
Over the following days and weeks suspicions only compiled but the evidence of what, if anything, had befallen the young mother was sparse.
Friends insisted that something horrible must have happened but certain family members, were not so sure.
Elizabeth Sullivan was a complicated and capable woman. It was possible that her disappearance had been by design. Maybe Elizabeth didn’t want to be found…

For your safety NEVER tell a spouse you're leaving, just leave quietly.
Totally agree with you
Exactly important to remember
Yep never let the right hand know what the left is doing
Yes.I experienced, domestic violence. My husband, was a violent individual. When I left him, he would stalk me. Show up at my place of employment. I was a security officer at a really large casino and they knew about my situation so he was not allowed to enter the casino.. about 2 years later we were divorced.

Dating a man whose wife just disappeared is crazy.
Yep!

Foolishness! Guess it didn’t occur to new girl, this could be you.
Most women love crazy men
AND GETTING PREGNANT AND BUILDING A LIFE WITH HIM....SMH
People need to stop assuming that someone is a good person just because they served in the military. I’m prior service. And a few things… first thing you’ll find out once you’re in is that many people there were given the choice: military or prison. Second thing, if you look at a list of domestic v**lance by profession, military service members are in the top three, along with police officers and professional athletes.
When I worked in the ER, we would hate to see a certain naval ship come back from sea because the domestic violence incidents would significantly increase. Their wives would soon start showing up battered and bruised in our hospitals. But on the news, they all looked very happy and like heroes when they returned. It was always that particular ship. Very disturbing.
@@Meela234 Sad but interesting info.
THIS.
Note how many of these stories have military losers as the perp. It's no coincidence.
Depending on the branch I think people are in awe of the dedication it takes.
But fewer and fewer people are all in on the military overall and the stories of infidelity are well known.
So I'm not sure the assumption is the same as it was earlier in time.
Sadly, most military folks I’ve encountered have been terrible human beings with a lack of empathy and compassion for others. They have a hard time transitioning back to the civilian world and don’t do well in the workforce, don’t work well with others.
Since so many YT channels are using those dang robot narrators, I especially appreciate your presence and storytelling. Thanks Kevin ❤

The only two I watch are this channel and "truly criminal" which are both human beings narrating
You don't start dating a month after your wife disappears unless you know for a fact she isn't coming back.
Or if the relationship was over
She already had a boyfriend, remember. So she was already moving on herself.
Boooom...
The lady he was dating was her friend and used to babysit the kids. Everyone in the neighborhood was questioning things
Hmm not true, the relationship was over already. I see nothing that makes him guilty based solely on the fact of dating a month later.
Dumb lawyer is saying because someone served in the army should get pass for killing his wife.?absurd
Since the attorney was paid by the defended they will say anything to try to win a case. That is their job and what they do for a living, dumb or not. "Attorney"
He clearly said Navy. But ok. Yeah the lawyer is the dumb one.
We're talking about leniency here. Not clemency! I do understand the uproar over the punishment (the convicted having to stay in jail for only 16 years or maybe less depending on his good conduct inside). And someone's great service to the country can really help to deaden or soften the punishment a culprit can get for his or her crime. Unless the crime is beyond the pale.
I believe Matthew earned a less harsher because not only he did great service to the nation but Elizabeth was no saint either. Both were cheaters.
Don't get me wrong. I always believe that a wrong can never be corrected by another wrong. Just like what Matt did to Elizabeth.
Hope their kids are doing all-OK!
Well they may be thinking she's black, he's white, so he should recieve leniency.
Im black and my former husband was white. He perpetuated domestic violence against me would say, as he was beating me, go ahead. Call the police. I'm white and you're black. I won't go to jail.
Guess what? He was right.
Agree just because he served in the navy so what!! Murder is murder and it should have been 1st degree murder RIP Elizabeth ❤I feel for her children I hope they are with her family
I would have given him extra time for being a veteran because that tells me he had been trained to be more accountable, responsible, and protecting of others. He violated his training and oath of honor.

It is an option, but she had an option to not disappear for days, have an affair, do drugs, all while being a mother of two small children. What kind of mother just takes off for days just to party? @@gatdemun He only served 8 years, we don't get a "pension" for that, and she never would have seen a dime either way
As someone who is also in the Navy, the fact that his defense tried to use his honorable discharge and awards as reason to lessen his sentence is laughable. An honorable discharge and the awards listed are NOT difficult to get. Pretty much anyone who separates or retires from the Navy is getting an honorable discharge. The Global War on Terrorism is given to anyone who spends at least 60 days in a participating unit (so any ship), the Good Conduct Medal is given to anyone that goes three years without getting in any major trouble, and the Humanitarian Service medal is given to anyone who’s unit participated in a humanitarian act (so it wasn’t him going out of his way to do some humanitarian act). His defense essentially said he should get a lesser sentence because he has participation trophies.
Exactly!!!!!!

You do not have a right to invite people to live in your home without your partners consent. That’s awful.
Especially when it's somebody your spouse does not get along with.
Yeah, sounds like he did it just to annoy her
Yeah, sounds purposeful. Like he’s pushing her away, or pushing her buttons. What a jerk. You know HE knew they didn’t get along. Shady.
Absolutely true! I doubt he would want to live with his mother in law. He was trying to engineer a breakup.
In my experience most women don't get a long with their mother in law. That was a purposeful/vindictive move on his part. Also, I'm thankful for those who serve and protect. However, I don't think that should be used to get a lighter sentence. Murder is murder.
Just wow! I'm so sorry for her family, friends and especially the children who now have no mother or father. Just sad.
Yes because the father killed the mother
Marriage sounded like a total nightmare
If you meet the wrong person, it is. Some people have been married for decades and never regretted it
Generally speaking, this story has been told ten thousand times over… oldest in the book.
The premise is always the same, only the names change.
And the method in which it occurs sometimes.
Yep. Women are in danger the minute they partner with a man
Same script, different cast.
This man was a monster- ppl who feel no remorse and can just go on like normal after murdering someone are especially scary.
The navy preped him for the murder job!
What do you mean by moster? He wasn’t his mother’s sister
P. DIDDY!!!!!!, ojay simpson......
He's prone to kill.
He's evil and narcissist
Her friend😢 her testimony made me cry.
All them in that house ganging up on her , he knew what he was doing . He exactly where he supposed to be
I was 19, married to a Navy man. My husband was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia ( the same base he was before transferring to California) My husband left for a 7 month deployment and I was 7 months pregnant with our 1st child. My hometown is in NC so I packed up and stayed with my dad. It was the hardest time of my life. Giving birth alone while he was in the Mediterranean. I was blessed to be with family. Elizabeth was young with 2 very young children, living on opposite coasts as her family and friends were left behind. I admire her for her strength in being alone , raising 2 children and in a new state. Many wives ( or husbands) go stay with family while our sailors are away for 7 months or longer. No matter what Elizabeth was doing she didn't deserve to be murdered.
Shows her sailor was a narcissistic and violent man. He couldn't handle the fact she was leaving him. He can't control her anymore. Yet, she was missing only a few weeks and he'd bring his new girlfriend to live in her house as well. He knew she wasn't coming home.. Thankfully he is where he should be.. behind bars.
Rest in Peace Elizabeth 🌷 🌷 🌷
HE'S the narcissist but SHE'S the one that cheated while he was deployed.
I'm super sure he should've just been happy with that. Not to say he should have murdered her but let's not play games and act like being cheated on and divorced while deployed hasn't ruined many men's lives.
I honestly think Matt sent that email to Liz's ex. He knew what was on that key chain because he followed and stalked them, or had a Navy friend do it. That must have been a horrific death and I don't know how no one else in the home heard anything? Maybe his mom helped clean up. Those poor girls.
I completely agree. But I do find it odd that her boyfriend didn't pass the email/s to the police and just deleted them. Maybe they could've tracked them and caught him sooner.
If I had to guess about the bf not reporting the email immediately? 1. He was afraid of the publicity of having an affair with a married woman, especially a soldiers wife. 2. Somehow influenced by her husband to stay quiet and might have even been lying about all of it. That's too confusing to figure (unless he was blackmailed about illegal activities done with Elizabeth? Very reaching though)
Motherin my experience, frequently mothers are easily manipulated, especially if the situation is unclear to them. If he claimed that he accidentally, or in a moment of rage stabbed her and killed her. i could definitely see her agree with hiding the crime. Because she couldn't see herself putting her own son into prison for an accident. Because nobody can choose to believe that their baby is a cold blooded killer.
Seriously. How juvenile.
I thought they got the info from journals

This case can be a reminder to leave a spouse, especially one you're afraid of, before starting another romantic relationship.
What about the many victims who are killed simply for the act of leaving, with no third parties involved? How did those victims bring it on themselves? It’s usually the loss of control that triggers abusers to homicidal rage. But whatever. It’s the age-old “what way can we find to blame the victim?” game. So much fun.
@@kcbarbo78 Are you suggesting that it's a good idea to have extramarital affairs?

Hypocritical narcissist behavior…….it would have been better to just leave her and not kill the Mother of his children.
@@daw7773 Yes, but I was only speaking about a person who is in a relationship with a man like this. Did the coroner confirm that Elizabeth's body was frozen and I maybe missed it?
I saw the part that said there was no proof her husband had done that but I know for a fact they can tell if a body has been frozen or not. Especially if it had been frozen for 2 years, so I'm puzzled that this would have been left off the coroner's report.
What I took from the MEs testimony was that her body could have been frozen but I don’t think they could say it had definitively been frozen for close to two years. So, she was dead for at least two months due to the progress of decomposition and it’s possible that she was killed even earlier if her body had been frozen to slow / delay the decomposition.

Thanks for another interesting video
Good job, Kevin!
Kevin, your content is well produced and always interesting. 👏 This is a very sad case, and more so for the 2 children who don’t have a mother or now a father in their lives. As far as his attorney, the little bit we saw of him, he was a babbling bag of wind. 🙉
Since when can't they tell a body has been frozen? Since when can't they get forensics from a freezer that held a body?
Yeah, I was wondering why her DNA wouldn't have been in the freezer.
