I donβt understand why Korea uses so much plastic packaging. Like, why are even bananas packaged in plastic too?
They have a whole recycling system that everyone uses. Itβs ok
@@may_nana312
1) youβd be surprised how few public recycling and trash cans there are. Itβs not uncommon to see trash by the sidewalk in some areas because there wasnβt recycling or trash nearby.
2) plastic recycling has been declared an objective failure by researchers around the world, who say that very little plastic is actually recycled. The best solution is to avoid single-use plastic. Donβt say βitβs fineβ unless you can show that all this plastic is actually being recycled.
what country are you in?
@@sennataylor592 Your first point doesnβt apply in S.Korea since the government is legally obligated to provide disposal systems at convenient place (traffic lights, street corners, outside certain government buildings). Just recently, Busanβs municipality installed a bunch of new disposal locations across popular tourist locations to reduce unsightly waste even more.
Your second point is not incorrect but slightly misinformed. S.Korea moved to a plant based packaging system circa 2014, based on public backlash of plastic in rural areas ruining the environment. The saran wrap thatβs used on fruits and meat has a tax placed on it by the government that pays for the proper burning and disposal of these plastics (they make up less than 15% of all plastics that are used nationwide). Seoul U and many other universities are working closely with environmental specialists and researchers to provide important data and study to improve waste disposal and management.
It wonβt be enough for you just yet, but itβs better than what most others are doing.
@@may_nana312 No matter what country you live in, low quality plastic like wrapped cannot be recycled.
