Watched this when I was about 7 years old. Barely understood the concept, I just loved how pretty her purple hair looked and all the butterflies and visuals. I had a similar experience watching this music video on repeat in 5th grade 😂 and I thought I just loved the visuals too, but I’m realizing now, at 22 that for me it’s about healing and getting in touch with your inner child who is so resilient and waiting for you to let her be herself again and save you from the pain that was conditioned into you growing up,, so you can finally take care of her too and let her shine again ❤️

I start to tear at the part when the little girl gets on her bike and she waved goodbye. To me I interpret it as Katy saying goodbye to her childhood and accepting the fact that she’s an adult now.
She had to revisit her childhood to face her past and demons. That’s what she was releasing, as she has now healed by facing it. The entire video is a representation of the trauma she’s faced through men, media, etc... showing how she’s been weak and stumbled along the way, but is finally okay.
