Truth Behind The Fear, Myths and Facts: About COVID-19 (feat. Dr. Ki Moran)
As new coronavirus fears grow, there are concerns that coronavirus misinformation online spreads fear and confusion. So today, let’s do some checks on myths and truth about new coronavirus. We have an epidemiologist, Dr. Ki Moran from Department of Cancer Control and Population Health at National Cancer Center, who served as committee of The Korean Society for Preventive Medicine in 2015 MERS Outbreak in Korea at the studio today.
Q. Coronavirus can be transmitted from an infected person via saliva?
A. We cannot say NO. There are not many viruses in saliva, but there are many viruses live in tiny droplets of saliva when you cough or sneeze. Coronavirus (CoV) is a family viruses that can cause respiratory infections (include lung infection). Test results often come back negative from infected patients if we just collect a saliva sample, so we go for a Sputum (mix of saliva and mucus) test. If an infected person after covering a cough with his hands, he picks up viruses on his hands. Let’s say you hand-shake with him and then touch your mouth involuntarily, you may then become infected.
Q. Have you seen any confirmed case of people getting infected after traveling on trains during the MERS outbreaks?
A: No. During past MERS outbreaks, we performed an in-depth investigation epidemiological survey. Out of 186 cases, only one patient is suspected to have been a community acquired infection. But that patient was infected to virus while working at the Pyeongtaek Police Station located between Pyeongtaek Hospital and Bus Terminal where the infected patients traveled around. (Out of 186 cases) 4 patients were suspected of household transmission and the rest are all hospital-acquired infections. Those who have been exposed to the virus in hospitals or ambulances. Ambulance driver included. During the MERS outbreaks, so 186 people were infected. (Yes)
Q. Many concerns that coronavirus is a common type of virus to MERS. 186 is a large number. Why so many were infected back then?
The largest known outbreak of MERS-CoV outside the Arabian Peninsula occurred in South Korea. So it took almost ten days until symptoms appear and diagnosed. He kept made contacts with people at hospitals until he was in the worst condition. After visiting 4 hospitals, he was finally diagnosed with MERS. Therefore, the first patient was unknowingly spreading viruses. Patients, healthcare workers and family members were exposed. When the government realized the situation we’re in, it was already too late for containment, since those people who infected from the “super-spreader”, have already transmitted the disease to others in healthcare settings such as hospital. inadequate initial response, I guess.
Q. Then how are we dealing with coronavirus this time?
A: It is a totally different story this time. We have noticed the virus once it has generated from China, and we’re guarding our gates this time and we’re like, ‘come on, make one more step - you’re going down’. Huge difference from the previous one.
Q. Since the government published the ‘virus patient travel log’, the concerns are spreading: what if I were in the vicinity of a patient?
A: If you did not get a call from the KCDC (Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), then don’t worry, you did not make any contact.
Q: So if you have met the patient, you definitely get a call.
A: Certainly. We go thoroughly all the security cameras and find every single person who made a contact with a patient. Classify into two categories: closely contacts and causal contacts. All Close contacts - those in skin contact or spoke with a patient - have been isolated at home. Casual contacts - no conversation, no skin contact but was next to a patient, or kept 2-3 meter distance with a patient - are undergoing active monitoring, allowed to perform daily activities but should check his body temperature twice a day and report it to KCDC.
Q. Here is another question, “Is it okay to get a pneumonia shot?”
A: For the record, “pneumococcal vaccine”, are vaccines against the bacterium Streptococcus pneumonia. The new coronavirus is, a “virus”. Although you cannot prevent pneumonia caused by coronavirus, pneumonia caused by pneumococcus (occur as a complication) can be treated.

사람들 있는 실내에서 마스크 벗는 순간 감염될수도 있다는 생각을 못하나?
도로쪽 걷다보면 매장안에서도 마스크 안쓴 직원들 대부분.
특히 야채가게들 종일 소리치면서 장사하는곳은 직원들이 싹다 마스크를 안쓰더만
물론 마스크 쓴곳은 다 쓰고있지만.
길거리에서는 그렇다 치고 버스안에서도 마스크 안쓴 사람들
졶나 짜증나는게 나도 마스크 쓰고 답답하고 더운데 누군 쓰고 누군안쓰고
쓰는 사람이 더 많으니까
그거믿고 안심하고 안쓰나?
약국에 마스크도 널널한데?
와..이런인간들 보면 내가 왜 마스크쓰고있나 싶더라.
차라리 중국이 제일이 안전하지
거긴 강제로 봉쇄라도 하니까.

마스크수급은 초창기 불안정에서 지금 안정세를 향해가고있습니다.
전국민이 마스크사려고 약국에 쇄도했고 일부 도소매업자들은 더 큰 경제적이익을 얻기위해 창고에 사재기를 해놨습니다.
그것을 현재 효율적으로 통제하고 해결(해나가는중)한 것이 현 정부아닙니까?
