SUBJECT: the anniversary of the 5.18 Democratization Movement.
SUMMARY: Proclaims May 18, 2022, and each May 18 thereafter, as the anniversary of the 5.18 Democratization Movement in California. Specifically, this resolution makes the following legislative findings:
1) Democracy is a form of government that the people of California and the United States support and defend. Democracy should ideally be enjoyed by many other freedom-loving people of the world.
2) The Republic of Korea achieved its status as an exemplary democratic country through an agonizing process.
3) The citizens of the City of Gwangju, united with their passion, belief, and courage, risked their lives during the 5.18 Democratization Movement to show their belief in the value of democracy and to fight against dictatorship and authoritarianism, in which unrighteous leaders abused their power to persecute and murder 166 innocent people, causing 376 delayed deaths from injuries, injuring 3,139 people, and resulting in 54 people missing in action.
4) The people of the Republic of Korea now honor the sacrifices made by the citizens of the City of Gwangju to defend democracy in Korea. 600,000 Korean Americans live in California, and over 2 million live in the United States.
5) Evidence, records, and valuable cultural heritage from the 5.18 Democratization Movement that has led to democracy in South Korea are officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The 5.18 Democratization Movement aligns with the United States founding fathers’ idea of a country of freedom.

ㅎ, ...논제와는 어긋나지만, 광주가 심각하게 정체 되어있는 중요(?)한 한 이유가 구 도청건물을 기념물이라고 적극 보존한 정책 때문이라고 생각한다. 당시 보존이냐 철거냐로 수년째 대립하던 상황에서도 어쩔수 없이 철거해야 한다고 믿었고 지금도 마찬가지다. ...구 전남도청이 서울역처럼 개화기때의 고색을 갖춘 규모있는 건물이었다면 어쩜 보존을 택했을 것이다. 하지만 당시의 도청건믈은 오래된 작은 건물에 이쪽 저쪽으로 콘크리트로 범벅이 된 60년대(다까키 시절)의 흉물(?)스런 상자곽 건물이었다. 게다가 그 지역은 지역 최대의 중심 지역이었다. ...그렇다면 아무리 상징성이 있는 건물이라 하더라도 시대에 맞게 철거하고 그곳에 작은 기념관과 생생한 당시 사진과 뚜렷한 표지석등으로 추모 했어야지 그 뚱딴지 같은 건물을 흉물스럽게 보존하고 어떻게든 의미를 부여 할려고 해서는 안될 일이었다. ...처음에는 일부 보존과 대부분은 개발이라고 하더니 언젠가부터 전면보존으로 바뀌어서 지금에 이르렀고 그것은 광주 구 도심의 발전을 두고두고 원천봉쇄하는 뻘 짓거리로 남아있다. 이제 와서는 대부분의 시민이 문제의 핵심이 뭔지도 모르고 그저 익숙한 채로 나날을 보내고 있는 형편이다. ...역시 리더를 잘 뽑아야 한다. ㅉㅉㅉ!!!!!!!!!!
