Hang a bird feeder outside the catio or plant some flowers that attract butterflies in your yard. The cats will love to watch them.
Bird feeders are so pretty until you look below and there's just bird poop everywhere, and you're a responsible adult and you have to clean it and it sucks.
My mother's cats love the shadows of hummingbirds (and they ignore the actual birds 😆👹).
I thought those attract bears as well and they advise against them.

@@spiralmoment I've tried taking my cat outdoors and he's too scared to step outside of the house until about 30 minutes passes and he finally comes on the porch and won't budge anymore. He's a bengal so I was trying to harness train him but he hates it so I stopped.
I'm glad that you included the bit about predator proofing. A lot of people act like the predators shouldn't be there even though we're pushing further into their land. Instead of taking measures to protect their animals or property, they just want the predators removed. Thank you for being considerate to your animal neighbors
There is a weird mentality with some people, where big and small, they don't like to think about negative possibilities. It's so strange for me, as I'm the kind of person who would rather worry about the fringe case, plan for it, and then feel better knowing I was diligent and aware. I've seen it with people and their kids, not wanting to acknowledge a developmental deficiency, a lot. This is usually when I find out someone is a "don't want to think about it!" type person.
It’s so weird and obvious to me, like of course we’re the ones taking their land… let’s just respect them and let them be. So many people think they’re the issue for like, chilling and eating.
@@Danny-be1ex I've read a lot of stuff about people not supporting conservation efforts to reintroduce predators because they're scared of them. It's like, it's their forests, and we've taken them. Ask any forest ranger and they'll tell you stories about tourists asking why there are wild animals running around and isn't that dangerous. Like yes, life isn't completely safe and sanitary, especially out in the wild. Animals do animal stuff. Once, I had a friend visiting from New York try to call the police because there was an opossum in our yard while he was visiting. The animals aren't the problem, the people who don't know enough to take basic precautions or who see the tiniest threat as the end of the world are the problem.
@@cathycat4989 my dad's a retired wildlife manager and also hunts/fishes, and yes so much people freaking out about apex predator re-introduction (and also doing WTF things like feeding white-tail deer and trying to get selfies with bison).
Where do you buy the predator proof hardware cloth?
I have a "cat bridge" that spans my entire living room. It has 2 tension bridges, 6 beds and one tunnel. They love it. However I didn't anticipate how loud it would be when they're running around on it at 4 AM.
Is it made just out of wood shelves? Maybe some carpeting will minimize sound?

Aww awesome. I kinda understand because we have wood flooring and let's say one of our guys isnt too light on his feet and thunders from place to place. Sounds like a herd of elephants passing through 🤣
@@nataliamaliga Good call, yes it's mostly made out of shelves. I do have carpet on some of it but alas it doesn't seem to do any good when all 3 of them are running a marathon up there.
@@MrPnew1 Yeah I don't know exactly what I could have done to stop it apart from putting rubber or foam in between where the wood meets the walls. But yes they love it.

You can never have too many cats
They can begin fighting if there isn't enough space. Cornell Vets say 5-6 is the maximum for a personal cat colony. I have 15 and I have to mediate disagreement everyday. If it was half the amount I think the tiffs would be less than daily. I live in a somewhat poor city so I haven't had luck finding good homes to take them.

This is awesome! As a SoCal native, warning about wasps building nests in the summer in the eaves! Be sure to check the eaves of the catio periodically to makes sure there are no pesky critters there.

I'm curious about termites.. considering doing one of these myself but most of them that I've seen online put the wood attached to the home which I've always been told not to have wood up against your home walls for termite damage purposes

Europeans want real houses that protect, keep you warm in the winter and cold in the summer. American houses are a joke and not ecofriedly. And by the way I couldnt hear my parents having sex during childhood. Thanks European houses.
Huh. We have a cat flap too, but the outer wall is like 30 or 40 cm wide (more than 1ft), so they have a small tunnel leading to the flap. But we have a wood house too, just a MUCH more stable one than that in the video😂 American houses. Never ever.

Yes. Trapping heat is the opposite of what you want here in Southern California. We’d roast.

One day when I own a house... I'm tossing up between wanting a catio, and just fencing in my whole backyard including top and bottom so that it is all one huge Catio. For now I'm renting so I have settled for harness training.
Also I love Eloise and Coco so much, I also have one fully black and one fully white cat, mine are called Luna and Artemis.

I'm a renter too, so I can't even put wire mesh around the balcony. Indie absolutely hates collars, harnesses, and leashes. If I put one on she just flops over on her side, refusing to budge until the offending object is removed. So she is strictly a house cat.
Eloise is definitely looking more confident. I wish condos allowed catios where I live. I have a balcony I never use and I would turn that thing into a fantastic catio if only my association wasn’t super against anything on the balcony.

If you do have a balcony, wouldnt your landlord atleast allow you to put up a cat net? without drilling or something
Netting a balcony is super easy and pretty cheap, you just need poles, a net and cable ties, and that usually does the trick for most balconies :D
Homeowner associations are cancer. You should move!
I have a balcony. The cats our out there all day . They don't try to get out or jump down. They just sit on the railing and judge people walking by. They learned it from watching me
My catio is a 10' X 10' chain link dog kennel with a reinforced top. Nowhere near as pretty as yours, but very secure. It's filled with shelving, plants, and two dog houses that contain litter boxes. We've probably had it 10+ years and the cats love it. They have access to it 24/7 through our bedroom window.
I loved watching Eloise purring and peddling in her pink bed. She was dribbling, cats dribble when they purr. We always get dribble on us from our cats but we adore them. Great catio ☺

When you said to Eloise (while she is in her bed making biscuits & watching the construction activity), “That’s all for you, Cheesy”....well I lost it! Then watching Coco & Eloise explore the catio, my tears kept flowing! Tears of happiness. So beautiful!!! 😻😻😻😻
My husband built a cat patio for me several years ago. We have moved since then and we miss it a lot. If we are to build another one I would not give up my door to the outside since I love the outside as well. I would just give them a cat door and build the enclosure around that area with an outside human size door to have access to be able to do clean up. That way we can all use the patio conveniently.

oh my gosh!! i've always wanted to make a catio for my cat. every day he's staring at all the birds and squirrels and wants to go out so much that we bought him a harness but he stilled meowed every single time we went out. so glad your cats could have a catio!

Oh my gosh they seem to love it so much! It’s also my dream to have one of these made when I buy a house. I once delivered to someone whose delivery instructions said to leave the package on the back porch and when I came around the side of their house, I gasped. They had a HUGE catio in their backyard.

Haroun is very scared of the outdoors actually! He was pretty freaked out when we showed him the catio, but he will come to love it in time. The girls love the outdoors because I've been taking them out on a harness since they were little, so the catio is less intimidating for them. :)

@@that_weird_animal_girl441 we keep ours in a bunny hutch and dont let the on carpet we have a play pen that they play inside and outside in. Also we give them many chew toys to make sure they dont chew everything
Our bunny's haven't chewed on any thing important in about a year or 2

I loved this video! I moved recently and made a whole foster room, with waterproof vinyl flooring, climbing shelves, and everything! Normally I do kittens, but right now I am doing a foster rabbit. We watched this video together!

I would like to build a detachable box catto for my window where my cats can watch me in the garden and be protected at yhe same time. I can open my window wide and all that space is a place for my cats to lounge.

I made my catio on my balcony by basically just stapling screening material to long strips of wood that I bolted to the stucco, framing out the open space. It changed our lives! I love seeing your kitties enjoying their new space and exploring...

So you asked; we have 3 DIY catios now in our yard and found your builder and video very good. As hopeless fans of our felines we had to figure out a way to give them that safe outdoor life that they deserve. Seems like we are constantly updating our catios and filming in order to educate others on how to make or update their catio. It's all about the little details. Cats that are in the house ALL the time, I feel that they would do with anything that would get them OUT! BIG, LITTLE, TALL, SHORT. Anything beats being cooped up ALL DAY! Love your CATIO!

My dream is a catio off the guest room window. My fluffs love this space and sit in the sunny window during the day. I live on a park and I hear dog walkers calling hello to my kitties every day. Definitely need a catio!

It's sort of a sun room for cats.
I've seen way smaller outside spaces for cats in other countries.
Some just build in their balcony.
While others just hang a cramped little "cage" outside a window. [ 🙀 ]
Wich looks just sad....
Could also be due to a permitting issue. Might be considered an "addition" if it goes over a certain percentage of the homes square footage.

As soon as Eloise came out I expected the flop and roll. My cats love the feeling of concrete and flop roll every-time their toe beans touch it. 😂 This looks so beautiful and so well made, thank you for the inspiration, we will definitely be recreating this in our new home!

I built a catio for my cat about 3 yrs ago, she loves being able to go out and get fresh air and see all the action the world has to offer, that catio you had built is awesome. my catio is 8 feet long 4 feet wide and 8 feet tall and is built 4 feet off the ground
I love this so much. I have always wanted one for my cats. My mother in law has a deluxe one on her back patio that her hubby built that has little houses inside of it.
He made windows, window boxes, put shingles on the rooftops, added heated beds, lights and even a little mailbox! 😁 I already have a large covered patio, so I just really need this!

We have had one for 40 years now, my husband built it. We have also proofed the garden fences so our Maine coons can’t get out. If we are in they can go in the garden where we can see and watch them, but if we are out they can only go in the catio and house.They have a high shelf to look over into the neighbours garden (they don’t mind as they are animal lovers as , and also a little covered hut to go in if it rains. They love it!🌈🇬🇧

When I had three cats, I built a "Catio" accessed through a "Catflap" built into a window. It helps give them something to do on their own so you don't have to entertain them as much. The more cats you have, the more something like this is needed.

This is good for homeowners but if you rent, and want to be able to take the catios with you plus get your deposit back, consider a window catio that is built with some standard dimensions. I have three multi-level catios made of lightweight PVC pipes, actual roofing material and movable shelves covered in vinyl. The cool thing about these, made for me by a local guy in Central California, is that all the pieces snap together in minutes and snap apart in seconds, sustain no weathering or damage from pee (though my cats do not spray) and attach with a few small screws to just the wooden window frame. All I need to do is take them down and fill in the holes the same as I would for a picture hung on my wall when I move. Landlord and management approved!
