Son of the White Mare's visuals and sound design are out of this world. An incredible movie that definitely needs more attention.

He said his magnus opus is The tragedy of man. It is probably the most important play written in Hungary in my opinion it is totally on par with Goethe's Faust. It's author, Madách Imre was a mediocore writer, but was inspired by many philosophers and writers. Hegel inspired the play's thesis, and the story is Faust combined with Byron's Cain and Milton's Paradise lost. Madách came up with his genius play, wrote it, then sent it to Arany János, who was by far the most talented and knowledgeable poet at the time (still top 3 in Hungary easily). They started working on it together, Arany made thousands of suggestions to make the writing and the philosophy better and more consistent, thus creating this absolutely stunning masterpiece. The animation contains the whole story, and makes really great additions from the present. I wholehreatedly recommend it to everyone, the play is the peak of hungatian literature, and the film is the peak of hungarian animation! It can be rewatched many times, first appreciating the animation, the the story, then the philosophy, then the philosophy again, and so on!

Toldi is worth a watch too, it's a fitting bookend to Jankovics's career, as both his first and last feature films were based on 1840s literature. It's not his best and most unique work and it has some weird tonal shifts but his morphing animation style and visual metaphors are still present, the art style shifts back and forth like in Tragedy of Man.
Jankovics also worked on a mythological retelling of the Bible in the 80s that he sadly couldn't finish because the project lost funding. One episode was completed in 2015. It's similar to Song of the Miraculous Hind in presentation, a shame he couldn't animate the rest of it but I think his unused storyboards and character models were compiled into a book.

Thank you for this video. This is how I discovered him and I truly believe he is one of the best animators of the past century with Son of the white mare being an incredible piece of animation and art and the Tragedy of Man feeling like the 2001: A space odyssey of animation. It’s absolutely awe inspiring.

I never expected to see the Biblical Adam turn into a Spaceship when I woke up today, but I'm glad I saw it! A lot of stuff here looks incredible; such variety and all of it stunning in their own way (I even think Toldi looks very nice). Great video! I can't believe you managed to go over all these things in just 10 minutes - your videos always cover as much as much, MUCH longer video essays here on KRplus and the shorter runtime is very appreciated when there are so many things to watch out there. Excellent work.

I'd like to say thank you for this video. Me and my co-host did an episode on Son of the White Mare. This video was helpful when talking about Marcell's themes. Once again, thank you!

I would really like you to do a deep dive on Hungarian animation more broadly. Habfurdo and Heroic Times are two fantastic films not directed by Jankovics that more people should know about
