Nuclear energy creates an uneasy feeling of danger for many people: ancient and dangerous minerals are concentrated to awaken seemingly unnatural powers, creating toxic elements that, if they escape, can and have killed people in horrible ways. How many people has nuclear energy killed and how?

There have been around 20 trillion trillion (trillion 2 times is not a typo) sentient life forms, including trillions of mammals and 10s of billions of humans, that have been tortured and violated and raped and molested and degraded and murdered by nature. it's been happening for 100s of millions of years, on a global scale without even 1 second of pause in the action .~
      ~
Life is without question the worst function in the known universe. But DNA psychology seems to have a literally undying dedication to ignoring this. Perhaps it all seems "deep and spiritual and beautiful" when you're whitewashing 540 million years worth of collateral damage. So what's the rest of the pricetag looking like? Why is this happening? And what exactly goes through someone's head, when they conduct a life experiment with a DNA code that literally invented torture, and yet they have the nerve to act surprised when things go wrong? ~
      ~
Because DNA evolution is just an error code, it is literally mutants and mutation, not even mutating on purpose, and the entire mutant code was strung together by chaotic incident of physics. It does not know what it's doing, or that you even exist - neither DNA nor the universe has anyone's back.
      ~
That also means this much harm is being caused for no sane purpose. You've probably seen people acknowledge life has no purpose, but The DNA Delusion creeps back in like a virus, "Life has no purpose... so you make up your own." That means senseless torture is being caused for a made-up purpose.~
      ~
Even supposed intellectual, rational, secular thinkers can't seem to let this notion go: "The universe created life so that it could..." - just keeps missing the point - not only of this philosophy but of evolution's truth entirely. It didn't do anything so anything.~
      ~
And this is precisely the knowledge that the philosophies of โ€˜Efilismโ€™ and โ€˜Antinatalismโ€™ are trying to spread to make the madness stop.

There is also another factor to this than the pure numbers: Deaths related to nuclear, and renewable energy sources are nearly exclusively related to accidents, while the deaths related to fossil fuels are overwhelmingly a result of regular operation. Accidents can never be eliminated completely, but they can be reduced in frequency and severtiy by good preventative measures. So the potential death numbers of these energy sources are even lower, while fossil fuels will just keep on killing until they are phased out.

Trust me, I really want nuclear energy to phase it out, but we need to improve the technology and perhaps find better alternatives before we do. Solar energy is something we could definitely use and could be utilized better. One thing really holding us back though, is greedy companies that profit from fossil fuels and buy political power

I can partially understand the fear from some people regarding nuclear reactions. However, I feel that many disregard the fact that it is virtually impossible for another nuclear accident to occur in power plants that utilize modern technology.
In a modern day nuclear plant, there are a high number of fail-safes to ensure that no meltdown occurs. There are also plants that utilize much safer energy sources to ensure that rogue reactions (which arenโ€™t common to begin with) or problems with materials donโ€™t occur- for example, Thorium is extremely safe compared to Uranium (look up Sam Onellaโ€™s video regarding Thorium for more information in a similar vain to Kurzgesagt).
One other problem that many people have is the radiation involved with nuclear reactions. While it is true that this is an issue that canโ€™t be absolutely prevented- protective barriers, suits, and other measures are taken but are not absolute- this video really hit the nail saying that it is significantly less likely for people to suffer side effects or death in comparison to all other forms of energy. The numbers just donโ€™t lie.
Nuclear waste is an issue thatโ€™s also difficult to combat, but itโ€™s leaps and bounds easier than trying to revert all the damage that the atmosphere and environment have taken through the use of fossil fuels. Worst comes to worse it is theoretically possible that we could launch all nuclear waste into space (just my own speculation), but Iโ€™d much rather deal with getting rid of nuclear waste later than trying to deal with an exponentially growing problem that jeopardizes all life on the planet in the form of air pollution and global warming.
With the modern measures taken to ensure that accidents are a near impossibility and how efficient they are, I really think that the fear of such powerful technology needs to be trusted more as the processes get even safer.

The main problem we face is making sure we properly dispose of the waste; we have so much of if stored above ground near major water sources in the U.S. that millions could be exposed to radiation poisoning if we don't do something about it in the near future. But yeah, in the long run, I'll take nuclear plants over fossil fuels any day: at least we can deal with nuclear waste!

    • @TheExplodingCore
      @TheExplodingCore ๋…„ ์ „ +6

If you think about it nuclear waste is the only waste that is being contained. Launching into space is not practical. Too heavy and there's a chance of launch failure/explosion.
Burying underground is the best way. Remember that nuclear fuel is diluted with solids and molten glass to a point where it's radiating much less which means it's decaying slower which is the reasons it radiates for such a long time in the first place. It can not leak, it doesn't crack and release fumes, it's pretty much inert and just radiates a little bit. It's really not that bad.
Combine that with the massive energy density..

I know this is an old video but I feel the need to comment. I have worked in nuclear power my entire adult life, and it is far safer than almost everything else. I feel like the major issue is that the general public is extraordinarily uninformed about nuclear power, and how it actually works. It seems like the majority of uneasiness about it is that the vast majority of people know next to nothing about it. They also know next to nothing about fossil fuels, and as such form an uneducated opinion based of 2-3 accidents that occurred decades ago. They have no idea the number of deaths that occur annually with traditional fuels vs nuclear, which is in the thousands for coal and basically 0 for nuclear. There is a lot of doom saying about nuclear, but as a short term option, it's as good as it's going to get.

The thing to remember is that most of the exceedingly deadly isotopes created by nuclear disasters tend to have very low half lives.
A site can remain radioactive for years, but a good amount of the isotopes causing extreme levels of radioactivity will likely burn themselves away in decay within the first few months after the disaster.
Naturally this is ignoring some of the social effects of such a disaster....
Anyway...when isotope half lives are thrown about I like to compare it to a bomb and a candle. The bomb is deadly as it releases a ton of energy all at once. A candle can be made to release the same amount of energy, but since it takes hours instead of milliseconds. It isn't exactly deadly...

Nope sorry, I was pro nuclear, when I did my Physics A-Level back in 2011, when the future seemed still well and new technology was on the rise. Today ten years later, 5 years studdies of economics at university, 2 years at Montpellier Energy Economics Faculty under the Pope of nuclear energy management in Europe, and now I'm even more determined against this technology, because I learned about solar and wind in practical use, we don't need nuclear anymore.
There are two main reasons, 1. people don't control the issue, it's all about probability but probability is always in the end when it comes to an accident very few help, we saw Tschernobyl and we have seen several more or less dangerous situations including Fukushima with several thousands of deaths associated... It is impossible to buy a risk insurance for a nuclear power plant on the free market, always governments provide this kind of protection, that does not indicate a good performance in any way.
Second fact is that nuclear is not economically viable on a mid and long term perspective, Deconstruction, rising security standards and ever higher technological complexity make nuclear energy from modern reactors very expensive, and only massiv state intervention can make new plants happen...
If I build a wind turbine and it runs only 40% of the year with half charge, I can easily complement it with solar for further 30% coverage and now I only have to stock my rest for further 30% of the time or use gas for those time periods, so a 70% RES energy mix with flexible sourcing would be already cleaner and cheaper than new constructed nuclear powerplants ( around 9ct/kWh vs. 15ct/kWh) and a 100% RES mix, which would be gained by storing hydrogen over long periods would cost even less and provide even cleaner energy. Every Euro/Dollar/Pound spend on nuclear energy is wasted money, and taxpayers will always pay for some crazy scientist and bad economists dreams...
Also I don't want to start a debate about prolonging the life of existing reactors, this is absolutely insane, the risks linked to the exploitation of such a powerplant are already getting more and more hazardous every year with rising temperatures, lower water levels and less and less skilled workforce, so how should you ever make those old machines, which will not get easier to handle, run well, when the alternatives are so cheap, easy to deploy and completely without major risk of accident...

โ€‹@@VanHanf22 That's a great explanation. Two things I'd like to add, in the video it is quickly dismissed that there is still no solution for safe storage of the waste. Even with thorium it still remains toxic for 500 years. What 500 year old building do you know that you would want to store nuclear waste in? Second, the mining that is required to get the raw material is very taxing on the environment, making the net result of CO2 production a negative. Finally, even if the chance that something goes wrong is very small, if something goes wrong, it will render a large area uninhabitable and all food produced in that area useless and all animals have to be shot or contained. This is unacceptable to me, especially since like you said, solar and wind power could provide enough energy if we would focus on improving that.

On September 29, 1957, the Russian โ€˜restrictedโ€™, unmapped town of Chelyabinsk-40, where the Russian government had secretly decided to build an atomic bomb, experienced a reactor meltdown that produced an explosion of 300 cubic meters (10,600 cubic feet) of 70-80 tons of highly radioactive waste. In comparison, during the Chernobyl incident there was primarily a release of iodine-131, which has a half-life of just 8 days, while the Chelyabinsk-40 explosion released strontium-90 (with a half-life of 28.8 years) and cesium-137 (which has a half-life of 30.2 years). The Chelyabinsk-40 explosion had affected 270,000 people living in the region, and the present generation sees an unusually high levels of various types of cancer illness to this day. The Russian government tried to hide the true extent of this incident from the public for decades.

How do I get to heaven? Will my good deeds be measured against my bad deeds? Do I need to be a good person to go to heaven? How do I know if I'm good enough?
Well the bible says no man is good, for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. So how do we get to heaven? Answer: By believing on Jesus Christ who took the punishment for our sin on the cross. There are no amount of good works we can do to achieve salvation because salvation is a free gift of God. We need to humble ourselves, realize we are sinners and that we need a savior.

The number replaced is such that the annual death toll of smoking is the same as reality. The same number of people are dying, but the outcry in this scenario would be enormous. The deaths are shocking, obvious, and not concentrated on the elderly (who's deaths are viewed as more acceptable, since old people die anyway, nihilistic I know, but that's how human psychology works).

Not really. This video is only about deaths. But there are other criteria, like nuclear energy is the most expensive, and if an accident happens, it will affect millions of peoples lifes in a densely populated country like Germany and will cost billions of euros. Also the atomic waste is an issue. The power from coal is temporarily, in some years or decades Germanys decision to close nuclear power plants coud be seen as a good one, when it's renewable energy sector is leading and it's produced power is green and cheap while other countries have problems to handle the prices and wars about uranium.

    • @TheNondiscriminatory
      @TheNondiscriminatory 3 ๋…„ ์ „ +207

@@vomm this is ridiculous or just wrong on all fronts. First of all, it's the most expensive precisely because of the ignorant public opinion about it, leading to constant litigation for attempts at building new plants from "green" groups, as well as an absurd amount of government regulation. Basically, it's only expensive because we've made it so.
Secondly, pretty much every problem concerning safety and even toxic waste is solveable through innovation- and I'll go a step further and say it *has been solved.* Essentially, the IFR (integral fast reactors) solved both problems with a) being designed in such a way that it's literally impossible to meltdown (they demonstrated this- FOR REAL- in the late 80s), and b) making it integrated, meaning it recycles a large amount of it's spent fuel making it more efficient while simultaneously making it less toxic, getting rid of a ton of toxic waste. Because of this method, the toxic waste dangerous lifespan is reduced from potentially thousands of years to about 400 years. Which is amazing.
So what happened to the IFR? Cancelled because of the moronic public. Basically, innovation that solves every problem you listed has been stifled by an ignorant government motivated by even more ignorant citizens. Hell, even now GE has developed a version of the IFR that could be in use today. But a lack of funding due to the fear and litigation and profitability has kept it from going online in mass.
If we want a green future, we NEED nuclear to supplement green energy, if for nothing else, for the base load, and we can use IFR reactors that cannot meltdown to meet that need.

it was concerned about image as the greatest country of the world. RBMKs have had several similar accidensts that did not escalated into full core meltdowns. They were not modelled properly (mostly because there were no tools for the job in USSR) and many little caveats of the operation were unknown to the operators because core design was based on the military production reactors (which also served as district heating and generators for closed cities). The other reactor - VVER (PWR type) had much better operational experience, but even USSR was unable to manufacture pressurized vessels (forged steel) in required amounts. Lack of energy for heavy industries pushed development of cheap design, dependent on graphite blocks and welded pipes - no really heavy machinery required.

@@josmarrubenbodan3906 More or less, all of the above. It's pressure, methodology, and motivation, which all ties back to morale. Less morale, means little in the way to find motivation to actually LEARN as many are being forced to learn things they aren't interested in. This is one of many issues that keep mental health from being taken just as seriously as physical health, which of course, leads to stress and anxiety.
