So many people are missing the point. You sign up to KRplus and choose to get push notifications from entertainers you don't want to miss. It's like a reminder on your DVR.
Its not bombarding your phone with trivial nonsense that you really don't need to know, usually with some baity AF title to try garner clicks, from a "reputable" news source. If Sky News sends me one more notification about Prince Harry deciding not to spend tax payers money anymore like the rest of his useless sponging family - I will donkey punch Rupert Murdouch and everyone he loves.

My decision to sign up for KRplus, Bejeweled, porn-hub and natgeo are not, in and of themselves, an engraved invitation to be constantly harassed by corporate interests, regardless of what they are selling or whether or not 9bajillion bejeweled points on sale for 4.00 is "actually a good deal."
It doesn't matter whether I like John Oliver, or KRplus. The fact is that, unless I am actively USING the KRplus app, they are violating my trust by attempting to hijack my personal device and use it for free ad space.
I love how these web exclusives are all just John posting his rants on things that happen to be annoying him that day. This means we can get another mailbag web exclusive from him if we all just annoy him with even more comments.

what that really means is they're trying to create addicting behavior...
That's the whole reason for it, besides collecting our data.

I get instantly engaged to block notifications for that app. Or if the notification reminds me that I have some app on my phone I've not used in months, maybe solve the notification problem with "extreme prejudice" and uninstall the app.
I find that excessive notifications cause a definite decrease in an app's popularity (I'm looking at you, NY Times and Amazon!).
You mistake developers with management. I'm a developer myself (not currently working for mobile apps) and I agree that push notifications shouldn't be so accessible as they are. Android could easily fix this and punish abusers. Apple will never change unless there's a law they've been sued over already.
And just think for every sensible person turning notifications off or limiting them per app, there's a million who don't.
Easiest way to get rid of it is to keep pressing the pop-up, it'll show you the settings for the specific app.

Phone calls (not robocalls) are so rare they have become emotional relationship currency
I would argue that robocalls have done more to kill the phone call as a concept than anything else. No one in the Gen X, Millennial and Zoomer generations will ever own a landline, for one thing, because they are just a vehicle for robocalls. And everyone these days has their phone on Do Not Disturb all the time, because who wants to hear the phone ring for robocalls? Not I, said literally every person who knows how to turn off a phone.
