Don't be ridiculous! This is _our_ fault. Well, it's not _my_ fault, because I vote - in _every_ election. But for years, progressives - especially young progressives - have been very unreliable voters.
Democratic constituencies just don't vote as reliably as Republicans tend to do. So Republicans have more power than their numbers would suggest, while we have less. And over time, this has been absolutely disastrous for our country (and likely the world).
When we vote in large numbers, we tend to win - despite the fact that the odds are stacked against us in both the House and the Senate. Of course, the situation in the House is _also_ our fault, because Republicans wouldn't have been able to gerrymander election districts if progressives had turned out in large numbers to vote in local and state elections, previously.
And we could even win in many Senate races if we'd just *get off the couch and vote* (and not throw away our vote on an idiotic third-party candidate, even if the primary didn't go our way).
This is _our fault_ (collectively). It always seems like so many liberals want to find someone else to blame, but it's just a fact that voting _matters._ Even in 2018, with all the hype that election got, less than _half_ of all Americans old enough to vote bothered to do so. And that was a big election year!
Of course, not every right-winger votes either, but they tend to be a _lot_ more reliable than liberals. That's why politicians tend to spend a lot of time on issues elderly conservatives care about - because those people _vote!_ - and little time on student debt and other things that matter to the people who can't be bothered to get off the couch.

I think the founding fathers would be dumbfounded by smart phones and nuclear weapons, as well.
The Electoral College is antiquated, and the founding fathers feared mob rule when the vast majority of the country were illiterate farmers not metropolitan. A popular vote is the best methodology for a modern democracy, and it's obvious.
Lastly, a popular vote is non-discriminatory against left or right, Democrat or Republican. For instance, if I were a conservative in California or New York, I'd want my vote to count.
