theres like a good 5 ways to do this trick which makes it really hard to learn from guessing as if you watch 2 videos you could see 2 methods. iv seen this trick done with fake scissors because your not actually suppose to cut anything. (done with having extra rope already in hand). which is cool because multiple ways leads to different stories / presentations done for it which makes it entertaining. )my favorite is mac king doing it)

The 2 ends are a different length. If you actually cut the middle they would have been the same length. Anyone fooled by it needs to pay some serious attention to the littlest details
