My father owned dairy cows. He believed that once a cow rejected her calf at birth like that, both mom and later, baby when grown, were at increased risk of rejecting the next generation calf. Although the kicked calf I raised by pail- feeding milk replacer , and later hay, grew into a cow we sold to a neighbor who had no complaints about her mothering skills.
No worries, both calfs and foals has rather poor eyesight when they are newborn. It takes some weeks before they can see okay 🙂🙂♥♥ And yes you are right, it's her instinct to "head bump" everything when she's hungry. It's so exciting to see you work your little farm and interact with Myra, thank you for showing us 🥰 You are doing a really good job Bri! Keep on doing what you do 🥰

Goat halter will fit her n no she not blind that's what a baby calf do to figure things out their Vision when they're young it's not totally focused it's kind of like a puppy a cat you know how their vision is blurred when their eyes are just opening on the same way with a a baby

She is not blind, I think when first born their vision might be a bit blurry on top of wobbly legs. They are not born knowing what a fence or other obstacles are. She is learning her world And as you said how they get Mom to "give" more milk.

Karter is hilarious 😅, every thing is TOO HEAVY! LOLOL 😂 A vet told me years ago checking one of my dogs eyesight, to quietly drop a Kleenex beside his head and see if he followed it. With a Kleenex, he couldn't hear it and follow it by sound only sight. Just an idea! You are the best Mama Bri. I love you guys!!💞

Hello Bri! Thank you for sharing with us today. Fern headbutt her moms udder too and everyone thought she wasn't eating. I've also seen the longhorn calves headbutt their moms udders as well. Not a farm girl, but isn’t there a way to take a soft rope and wrap it to make a halter? No metal connections? Think I have seen them on Rick’s “Think Like a Horse” channel. I guess taking it on and off might be an issue with the calf, but she looks so tame. What a beautiful baby! ~ Cait (dang it! Bree calf halters make like an X with the chin/jaw strap. Amazon has a couple if you search calf halter. There’s also rope ones that are just the nose band, ear band and lead all in one that are used in shows.

It stimulates the milk flow. All mammals do that. Not all head butt. Others use paws.

The headbutt is to stimulate milk flow. Puppies, kittens massage with ther paws. Sometimes even in adulthood on blankets, even people. It's instinct.
