Doctor Sleep kind of went under the radar for me at first, but I really enjoyed it when I finally sat down to watch it (saw the 3-hour director's cut), what are your thoughts on the film? Let me know below!
I thought the movie sort of parallel Star Wars in a way since I can never divorce Ewan McGregor from Obi Wan Kenobi. His character of Danny Torrance sacrifices himself so that Abra may live. At the end of the movie, he becomes a Force Ghost to mentor Abra and teaches her new techniques to shield herself from the other ghosts of the Overlook Hotel. The movie is also about confronting fear which is the destiny of the Jedi since towards the end of the movie, Danny Torrance had to confront the ghost of his father and pass the temptations of alcoholism
Started the movie without knowing that it was a sequel. Distracted when I realized that it was a sequel. Wasted several scenes trying to reorient my imagination and rehabilitate my willingness to suspend my disbelief. Then when I finally understood that it was going to be an action/comic book flick rather than a psychological thriller like The Shining I discovered that I had in fact been deeply delighting myself in the moments of serenity achieved by Danny in the movie from the first scene. I was touched.
Also watched the director's cut: love how Stephen King always knows how to evoke our deeper knowledge of our realities, including true evil versus true good, the struggle of light versus dark, the process of shifting between those two and the reasons behind it.
Some great elements were buried under hollywood shlock and much of what made The Shining great was disrespected and felt largely played for nostalgia.

The shining was about how alcohol can destroy a family while doctor sleep is about overcoming addiction and having redemption
@Jason McGrath *sigh* 🙄 Sure, a movie about a alcoholic who stole from a junkie single mother and left her to die with her baby and then ends up quitting alcohol, getting a stable job and saving a child from a horrific death isn't about redemption.
Not alcohol... but trauma ... alcohol is just the simptom... its giving into fear..fearing pain

Probably the most underrated and unfairly overlooked movie of the year, a modern day horror classic that didn't get the attention it deserved. Mike Flanagan is a genius. Great video.

I never was a big King reader,but i read some of his books(Under the Dome,The Dark Tower,etc).I never read The Shinning or Doctor Sleep though,so i was surprised to immeadietly recognize King's style in the movie.Like i was just watching his book on screen.
I just watched it for the first time today and i must agree with you. It wasn't marketed correctly at all. This was a superb film!!

Never had a drinking problem, but I did with drug abuse. I will visualize this scene every time I get in temptation

This film really hit me, especially the dying patients in the hospital.
I’ve always feared death. I want to believe that there’s life after death, because when I do die, I just fear that there’s nothing. That it’s just like going to sleep, but not waking up.
The feeling that there’s just nothing after we die is very scary.
Do you know why it's scary? It's scary in the implications it has for those still living. Because as an event itself, it'd be a beautiful mercy for it to be like that. We can't see it that way, because we're alive still. And that type of death re-contextualizes the events we experience while alive in a bleak way.
Mark Twain once said that we were dead for hundreds of millions of years before we were ever born, and it never caused us the slightest inconvenience.
If anything, we should feel liberated by it. I mean it’s amazingly absurd, everything, life. We live our lives constantly in search of some greater meaning, but life is defined by the very lack of meaning at all. How strange it is to be anything at all.
Yeah, that last curtain closing is super scary…
But I tell myself that the sun doesn’t owe me its rays…
That none of this experience, from having a mind being able to receive and process and integrate information, to having a body that can move through the world, none of it is owed to me.
It seems like gratitude and kindness, when possible, are the best way to exist before the end….
There is life after death. Heaven and hell are real. Thousands of people arouns the world have seen both. Hundreds of sighting videos are on youtube. Stop believing we are accidents of notbingness. Its foolish and its not true.
My favorite scene in this film is when he sits at the bar with his father and has a final conversation with his father.

9:21 "Ka is a wheel, Doc" As both a filmmaker and a Stephen King fan (a Constant Reader) that quote gives me chills. The underlining truth King and Mike Flanagan give to us is clear: We have to use Ka in our favor as long as we can, we have to face our demons no matter what because they'll always come back, and only by trusting our Shine and our Ka-tet we can defeat them.

I went into the theater with very low expectations - something that's become the norm when it comes to Stephen King adaptations - and left very excited. I had that feeling of having experienced a rare occurrence in modern day cinema. Your summary is very accurate and beautiful.
I have a similar relationship with my father. My father is still alive. He tried to kill my mom when I was four. He used to beat me. Now that im 32, when i give him chance after chance to change, he has tried to hurt me, take my kids away, demean me. I am better than he is. I am a good father, a good husband, and he has no power over me. I am calm when he physically assaults me, and I do not fight back. I am not him.
Thank you for this! Stephen king definitely discussed philosophy in his works. The books were absolutely wonderful to read. Shawshank Redemption is one of his finest. I start my philosophical studies in May this year. Four long years ahead of me but Marcus Aurelius said it best, not everything is found in great books, it's in your soul and retreat there if needed.

One of my top films of last year and favorite books. Doctor Sleeps is a perfect sequel.And your essay once again put's into words what makes the story connect so much.
I was expecting this to be a middling movie when I went to see it, but I was surprised by how good it was. I think it's the caliber of sequels as like Blade Runner 2049 in that its the sequel to an old movie and didn't become a financial success despite being a really great movie.

For me this was definitely about fighting addiction and alcoholism
Believe or not they are the same thing.
The addiction theme is a mere footnote. The hidden symbology and legends revolving around the elite torturing, raping and killing children in ritualistic fashion in order to harvest steam (adrenochrome) has been around as long as the written word has existed. That is what this is all about. Danny is just a character used to tell a story that is literally based on real life. Eaters of children is a common theme in Stephen Kings work. Human trafficking is a bigger business than drugs.

one of the very few channels that gets me to watch a new video immediately. kudos to you, good sir :)
In the book, I thought the theme was one accepting your death and embrace living. The villains were quasi-immortal and when they became infected they desperately tried to stay alive and died a painful demise. Where Dan was surrounded by death as Doctor Sleep but gave the dying peace as they left.
When billy died I was so sad. But I feel like Danny knew his spirit would be around still so it hurt less. Also the scene with Jack and Danny is good, but I don’t like how they never seem to reconcile with each other. In the book: Jacks spirit helps kill Rose the Hat when Danny and Abra confront her at the campsite where the Overlook used to be. That felt really compelling to me and a perfect way to redeem Jack as well.
Then again I’m not a huge fan of Stanley Kubricks version of The Shining. It’s an okay movie with great visuals. Jack should have more substance to him and the story itself should have been less of a standard ghost story. The book kept you guessing as to how real the ghosts were and if Jack was just going stir crazy from being stuck too long in the Overlook.

Kings Doctor Sleep is fantastic. Riveting and a masterful work of fiction. His characters are so well drawn you can almost feel them as well as see them in every detail. I want to watch the film but the images of the book are so fresh in my mind I will leave it a bit longer. This was a wonderful piece and certainly does justice to what I can see will be a fantastic film.

this is such a beautiful analysis. i loved the part of the video where ghost-jack's speech was edited over the scene of dan in the aftermath of billy's death. dan could've wiped his pain and grief away in that moment with the drink, but he chooses not to, and in doing so he refuses to let the ghost of his father continue to haunt him in this way.
i don't think it's a coincidence that ghost-jack describes drinking as an "eraser to a blackboard", while abra (who is a part of dan's recovery and self-acceptance) initially communicates with dan using the blackboard in his room-and in that scene of dan post-billy's death, he throws away the drink and instead chooses to save abra. taking an eraser to the blackboard would ease his pain temporarily, but doing so would mean turning his back to that connection he's forged.
i absolutely love this movie and this video gave me an even higher appreciation of it (something i didn't know was possible). thank you for making it!

@Like Stories of Old it took me awhile to watch Doctor Sleep as well. But when I did I really enjoyed it. It also made me watch The Shining again and really fall back in love with the movie.

It's challenging to not think of Kubrick's brilliant Shining while watching Doctor Sleep and compare the two, but I appreciated the themes and messages within both films. Each one very distinctive and I'm glad Doctor Sleep was it's own film and not a sort of mimic to Kubrick's style. I love Ewan's acting and his character's journey through the story.

This video hurt to watch. But it was a good pain. Like debriding a wound. It hurts like all hell but it's the only way to save the organism and make it healthy again. But man, when those feels start feeling and you realize just how much you've held yourself back and hurt yourself in your own life... oh man do those feels feel feely.
