The Ending Of The Green Knight Explained

  • The Green Knight offers up a unique -- and pretty weird -- take on the traditional hero's journey of so many fantasy stories. The movie centers on Sir Gawain, a young knight with aspirations of greatness who accepts a challenge from the visiting Green Knight: attempt to lay a blow on the Green Knight, and in a year's time, the Green Knight will revisit that blow on him.
    Weird setup? Sure, but it gets even weirder. This is a story with ghosts, hallucinations, talking foxes, giants, and pure nightmare fuel, so it's pretty easy to get lost in the story as it unfolds. The ending is all the stranger, but if you got lost, don't worry. Here's a look at the ending of The Green Knight explained.

    You guys left out how he didn't actually die at the end... the Green Knight smirks when he says "off with your head" because it was all a game, to get him to prepare to become a better man. He could only live once he stopped fearing death
    (The after credits scene with the little girl putting on he crown implies he lives, becomes king and has a daughter, but doesn't crave power as he does in the other vision)

    There's a scene in the beginning with Gawain rolling around on the floor/dirt saying he's not ready. That's for shadowing how the mission ahead is a game constructed by his mother in order to prepare him for the throne. King Arthur even has knowledge of what's going on and tells him that it's just a game. The whimsical nature with how the Green Knight says now off with your head, as well as the knowledge that Gawain survives in the original poem... You can see that this was an orchestration to prepare him for a knighthood/king hood. There is also a little girl in the end credits who puts on the crown. There would not be a little girl with dark hair like that to put the crown on if Gawain was dead.

    • @AxelQC
      @AxelQC 년 전 +4

      In the traditional poem, the Green Knight is also his host. The host/Green Knight scars his neck because he failed to reciprocate their game, but otherwise lets him live, teaching him a lesson of honor.
      If Gawain dies at the Green Knight's hand, he has learned nothing and died for nothing. Arthur dies without an heir and the kingdom falls into chaos. His mother has led him to a death that robs her son of the throne. This is a very existential ending that would not have played well with Medieval audiences.

  • @DustinBarlow8P
    @DustinBarlow8P 2 년 전 +43

    You know he lives also because the last part of the poem, the Green Knight says "upon the completion of the game we shall part ways as friends". I believe just the act of accepting death, was enough to restore his honor.

    • @12sin8
      @12sin8 2 년 전

      I'm not sure that line guarantees that he lives. TGK coud just mean that Gawain will thank him for the posthumous honor that his axe will bring when he takes off his head. The parting coud be akin to "till death do we part", it doesn't necessitate that both parties survived. I think like most films based on a myth, the director never intended to provide the audience with a definitive outcome.

    Does anyone else think the Green Knight in the chapel might have been Arthur instead of the lord? He wipes Gawain's face like Arthur and says "Well done, MY knight," I'm pretty sure. Plus, Arthur spoke to Gawain's mother before he left on the journey, so I think he's in on it in this version. At the least, they had to be making some parallel to Arthur at the end.

      I just watched it and the green knight looks like Arthur. I thought it was the work of Arthur, his mother, and merlin. I thought it was a test to see if he was worthy of becoming king. That's why I came for a ending explained because I thought they would say Arthur was the green knight. Funny enough I never watch looper because they usually drag out a 2 minute explanation but this was the only ending explained on this movie that wasn't 30 mins or longer. There's even a explanation on Novum that is 1 hour 46 mins long and the movie is only 2 hours 11 mins so that is jist absurd for it to be that long.

    As I see the film's meaning, it's all about Gawain's mother's aka Morgan le Fay's plotting to make her son the new ruler of Camelot. She summons the Green Knight in order for her son to challenge him and prove himself as a knight in the eyes of the King, gives him the magical sash (two times actually, first time herself and second time as or through the enigmatic Lady, the fellow witch) assuming by that fact that he will flee from the Green Knight anyway and will say to the King that he defeated the Knight, just as the Fox (which is also Morgan in disguise) suggests him to do. Thus, we see the alternative ending, conjured by Morgan, where we see her scheming bearing fruits and her son first becoming the knight and then succeeding Arthur as the king. But that scheming, brought about by foul, pagan magic, is come undone at the end and Gawain's ruling ends in a great tragedy for everyone in Camelot. But in actuality, Gawain defies his mother and her magic at the very end, removes the magic sash and allows the Green Knight to behead him, thus proving himself as a true knight, but failing his mother's wicked ambitions for himself at the same time.

    Ok so the ending was basically what I thought it would be in the first place...doesn't make the ending more appealing tho. I liked the movie all in all because it was different then the typical fantasy telling and it had extraordinary beautiful set pieces and camera work in my opinion I really liked the acting too but the end left me with a bitter taste in my mouth so to speak because yeah it's consequentially the right ending for him but it's too bad they didn't show us a "way out" of this situation and generally speaking showing us the viewers a way on how to find peace and fulfillment even when the odds are against us and we are not as great as we think we are. It's a pity because now we were left with a) live a life that is extremely miserable or b) die immediately which are both very frustrating outcomes lol. So I don't know if frustration as the last emotion your viewer takes out of this movie is the best idea. But yeah at least it's an emotion that's better than overall disappointment that's for sure too.

    Why are most of A24 movies so weird and have the strangest endings? This movie was good as far as cinematography, music and costuming. Acting was good too. But story really dragged. I was like please let's move along already. And from the very beginning I knew from him chopping the Green Knight's head off made him dishonorable and therefore will never be a knight. I also do not believe he should be honored for going to have his own head chopped off. There's too many people that do evil things then expect forgiveness after the damage is done without any consequences. It's like you doing something evil and then saying ok now that I got that out of my system I will be good now. Not good. As the movie went on, almost everything he was doing showed how he was not a good person and I was just waiting til he got what he deserved already. In the end I was satisfied with him ending up a fake and losing his kingdom and everything but they had to do a whole "Last Temptation of Christ" thing where it was just what his life would have been if he ran away and then deciding to accept his head getting chopped off. Sorry but I hated that ending. I will definitely not watch this movie again and I do not recommend anyone to watch it.

You do realize that the Khans ruled all the way in the Ukraine and their descendants were still in power when Catherine the Great sat the throne in Russia. Not to mention the centuries of rulership by dark skin people in Spain and Portugal, who also mixed with the people a hop skipping a jump next door that we know of as France and England. Here in the United States they shy away from this history but I assure you I have been to Portugal and their museums where they are very proud of men that look like they are straight African that built cities there many many centuries ago.
