Glad you included The Driver. It has some classic car chases and when he demonstrates his driving ability by destroying the Benz is an all time classic scene.

McQueen is also the King of motorcycle chases in The Great Escape.

The best part of the "Bullitt" chase is when the dude driving the Charger sees that Mustang in his rearview as it pops up.

Dirty Mary Crazy Larry is my all time favorite old school car chase movies. I was crushed at the ending

Interesting that Bourne in the mini cooper performed many of the same stunts that made the original "Italian Job" movie so great. Cool car, cool stunts.

Watching this brought a tear to my eye seeing those beautiful cars being destroyed. There's not too many around and they're expensive. I can see why.

Back in 74 my wife and I went to a drive in movie to see Dirty Larry and Crazy Mary plus Race with the Devil I owned a 72 VW bus and after the movies I told my wife I'm putting the pedal to the metal and she laughed and said it take us an hour to get to 50 miles an hour in this VW bus.
When we got home we made love 💕💕😊.

Dirty Mary's ending was very creative and I'm surprised it's not been duplicated. Was surprised to see the movie included in the list as many people over look it.

The Blues Brothers is (in my opinion) the best film ever made.
It has everything, amazing car chases, the best music, and great comedy.

Best car video I have seen a long time. Presentation and editing are great. Most agree that "Bullitt" is the best car chase scene but I still have to stick with the original Gone In 60 Seconds chase. That one is off the charts.

My favorite chase movie is Duel in that there was more intensity in the drama of the hunt and chase. Action scenes notwithstanding but constant action and crashing doesn't necessarily make a good movie. In Duel, the whole movie was a hunt and chase scene but it was as intense as any chase scene movie I know of - for most of the movie! That is, Duel worked as it focused on the drama of the chase without majestic and exaggerated music and without the constant crashy action. Kinda like Jaws - that movie was scary as h*ll with very few actual shark action scenes - like when the shark "'appeared" during the singing of "Show Me the Way to go Home." Friggin' one of the scariest movie scenes ever!

I love the unlikely choices of movies that you chose for great Chase scenes. I own the movie "short time" with Coleman because I remembered how fun it was. A guy who thinks that he's dying decides to try to get killed on the job in order to protect his wife and kid. Whatever he did he could not kill himself. It was a great film. Dabney Coleman is a great actor.!
Smoky and the bandit is another great film that I own and watch at least twice a year. Jackie Gleeson was priceless. Whatever people said about the movie when they saw it, it did amazing at the box office.

Mad Max is my favorite- but Bullitt (sp?) is the all time great... so there's that

Maybe not a car "chase" movie per se, but to me the most authentic, and realistic car movie was 2 lane black top. The sounds, and most of the terminology was as accurate as any Hollywood car movie ever made. Maybe the plot, and acting sucked, but the car scenes, and drag racing was spot on. But to me, the best car movie, was American Graffiti. Pretty good acting, story line, and car scenes. When ever we left the drive-in, after watching these movies, the outside roads were scarred for life. :)

Bullitt and Vanishing Point were always my 2 favorites although not in that order...

It's about time Duel got it's due! I remember when this premiered and it has stayed with me for over 50 years.

Best one ever was "Short Time" 1990

Vanishing Point was my all time favorite, loved the storyline, loved the car and loved the chase RIP Barry Newman. Not that horrible remake either!!!

In Highland Illinois, saw a white 1971 dodge challenger, with vanspt on the license plate

@ 0:38....Imagine all wheel staring, these cars would get in and out of tight corners and spaces very quickly.
Not mention out preform most cop cars.
I love smaller faster cars, Hatchbacks and is currently looking for them to buy.

I'm gald you included Duel, Its such a good movie with a simple premisse, the people who say "the plot doesnt make sence" they probably never went into a long road trip, I remember the numerous times we had close calls in family, we once got a semi truck to force us into the opossite lane, we couldnt help but ask in the car "did he intend to kill us?". This movie is relatable, and the whole thing about being in the midle of nowhere and no phones cuz its the 70s, this just adds to the suspence, I end up eating my nails everytime I watch it.

I bought a brown version of the lovely red Plymouth Reliant in 1989. It was one of my favourite cars, along 2 64 Chevs, a 53 Dodge and a 53 Chev. Still have 10 on my "shopping list" lol.

Just watched Duel last week.

This is what i hate about hollywood these days. Everything even the simplest scenes are CGI. As if that wasn't bad enough, everything is completely unrealistic, exaggerated and often completely stupid.

I remember watching .."The Italian Job" and thinking these "Little Cars are Awesome....

French Connection and Bullit had the best chase scenes period

Vanishing Point!!!!

A great example of totally ruining car chase flicks with over the top, impossible and ridiculous stunts has to be "the Fast and the Furious' franchise, especially after Tokyo Drift. While the rest of the sequels do have 'some' good legit automotive chase/stunt work, I feel they really went off course after Tokyo Drift. When I first saw Tokyo Drift, I absolutely loved the parkade drifting sequences because it took me back to my very early 20's when a few friends and I would go into certain areas of downtown Vancouver and do timed races, often drifting thru the parkade's polished concrete floors. It truly was a gas, and we only almost got caught by the cops once ! Stanley park was another great place to go racing thru in the wee hours of the night. Those were some fun days, so I have an appreciation for real, die hard car chases and stunt work !

The Jason Bourne, Mini Cooper scenes were good until they brought out drive-through-the-perfectly-timed-plate-of-glass gag. Really, that was overdone back in the 1960's!
Ok, it was a plate glass door this time but, nah, that's still the same trite gag. Surprised they also didn't hit a farm truck with chickens and a fruit cart.

In jason Bourne, the chase takes place in Paris, on the "Voies sur berge", a 1 way 2 lanes that allow to avoid traffics lights on each bridge, along La Seine.
There is one on each side of the river, north one go from west to east, the south is the oposite

Cgi killed car flics.

2:20 gone in 60 seconds - it was an accident to hit the power pole. They had to fix the car after that, but they left the crash in the movie, and after the big jump, the throttle was stuck on causing him to do another spin

The unibody Dodge Dart/Plymouth Valiant consistently won demolition derbys against full frame passenger cars from Chevys, Fords, Dodges. It is one rugged vehicle! Owned a 390 GT Mustang. Purchased after watching Bullitt. It could smoke the tires to 3rd gear. Burned up starters which were next to exhaust. Should never have sold it. Now worth $$.

I went and bought new Trans Am after seeing the movie,,6gs,, the good old days 😂

I think there are only two of the movies on your list that I haven't seen. I love watching all of them. One thing that makes Gone in 60 Seconds noteworthy is that there was only one scene where they used any kind of ramp to get some air. All the rest of it was whatever would really happen. I get annoyed by the impossible stuff cars do in more recent movies. Kind of like watching the A-Team TV series where at least you knew that the car doing somersaults in the air was fake and supposed to be that way. If you need some explosive piston to get a car to roll over, you're doing it wrong.

That's when you had to make it work the first time to get the movie shot and live with your choices and hope it was caught on film and nobody was hurt or at least killed in the stunts. Then alot of them was done without state permission or cities knowing until it was done. The ones done with friends without company interference was the best ones.

Wasn't the French connection the movie that got all filming in Chicago banned? And The Blues Brothers was the among, if not the first, to film in Chicago after the moratorium ended?

What's sad is the "route" used in Vanishing Point is easily done legally in less than 36hrs. And that includes sleeping a full 8 on the trip. Plus gas/food stops too. Yes that also includes the backtracking in the film.
The long route is a measly 27hrs.
The short is only 18hrs.
And that's all the way to San Fran.

The movie Christine . What they did with the Plymouth Fury wasn't CGI.
Bullet was always my favorite until tied with Road Warrior.
But what they put the Ford pickup through in Mr Majestyk was good enough for Ford to use in commercials for a few years.
Back to Steve McQueen. He really didn't need to be a actor with his driving skills.
And it wasn't just cars. Is motorcycle skills we're top notch.
Although he done most he would have done all of his own stunts had it not been for Studio contracts preventing it.

Furious movies have terrible car chases, but they do actually have some real stunts. The problem is that they add so much CGI on the real car stunts, that they also look fake even if they aren't. What's the point with stunt drivers when it will still look fake?

I'm planning to make some chasing scene on my Chevy Nova 1973 with its race engine under the hood from Chevy Camaro 1979 somewhere in California, or maybe Colorado mountains

What I want to say is that the world is so much better now than it was then. From an engineering perspective, that those cars started at all was because the points, condenser, and plugs were all clean. Those cars needed leaded gas to keep the valves from leaking. That's all gone now. The air is cleaner. I own a car with about the same power-to-weight ratio as those classics, but it's got anti-lock brakes and traction control undreamed of in those days. It starts every time, and it keeps my ass safe every time I get too big for my britches, if you know what I mean. Everything is better now. Just my opinion, I could be wrong. Love you guys. Oh yeah, except for CGI.

An honorable mention should go to the best comedy duo of all time, Laurel and Hardy.
Over their whole career I’m sure they destroyed more vehicles than all of these movies combined, and all in the first half of the 20th century. When thinking of car destruction, one film in particular comes to mind: “Two Tars”. They destroy dozens of cars, and all on one reel of film!

CGI has taken away from the real RUSH of a great car chase. The stuntman is becoming a job of the past. Things like that are why Hollywood sucks nowadays.. Movies aren't worth paying the high cost to go see one anymore.. And that's really sad..
