When I was a kid I used to have dreams like this. My eyes would be closed and a nice sounding voice would try to convince me to open my eyes, but if I did it would be a scary monster.

I had something similar but not quite this way. I never had anything speak to me. I just had the subconscious idea that if I opened my eyes while I was still in REM sleep I’d go into paralysis. So I never opened them because the first time I did, I went through sleep paralysis.

the monologue about doors being tricky oddly felt really familiar to me, regarding anxiety. thats how my mind views everything. every task as something with an overwhelming amount of options that all result in different endings. I worry about if I'm somehow doing something wrong. Even if it's in regards to something as simple as just opening a door.

Holy shit, I just realized something. When the sleep paralysis demon says "Your eyes are so beautiful" it made me think "You haven't seen our eyes open". Then I realized that we don't know what the main character looks like, we're just as lost to our appearance as the demon.
I'm not far into the video, but my theory is that the demon is really just the main character, or, amusingly enough, a personification of the main character.

just wanna give praise to the soundtrack. they could have gone with a typical indie horror background ambience or a straightforward scary song loop, but instead they have this very mystical, esoteric, dreamlike, melancholic, atmospheric pad guiding the subtly tense pace of the monster’s perturbing dialogue. it helps the game perfectly frame the initial mystery of if the visitor as simply an unfortunate and lost soul, just seeking someone, anyone, to help them find a grounding in their own reality.
Yeah actually! You're right, it gives off a very solemn and dreamy type of feel. Slightly eerie, yes, but somewhat of a familiar, palatable feel. It suits the monster as well, since despite him being scary he shares very human feelings and emotions that help make this game a bit less scary/unsettling.

Okay, hot take;
This isn't a monster at all.
This is what the protag sees themselves as. The monster is their rendition of themselves because they can't connect with other people, that's why they decide how the monster looks, and it fades when they open their eyes, because the monster is them.
And this might be projecting a little onto the game, but hear me out a little longer.
The protag/monster keeps talking about connections and memories and how they can't form them or it means nothing to them. Well, I have similar problems. I have severe memory issues, I can't remember anything more than one day ago, and even that's a 50/50 chance; and I have highly sociopathic behavior patterns, ignoring others and even trying to get a rise out of them for my own amusement, only until they're useful to me, and then I care about them.
This monster seems very similar. They show little interest or care in humans in of themselves, they only care about the part of being recognized like them, making connections and worthwhile memories like them, always thinking of their interests and grasping for them without worrying about the actual humans themselves.
The monster also seems to know you well, or have a special connection to you as the game progresses. With lines such as "you might be different" talking about other humans it felt no care for, or "...was it you?" With wondering if you're what they're looking for.
I haven't finished the video just yet, but I'll edit this to see if I was correct [or even if Manly agrees, cause great minds think alike lmao]
Edit: I dunno if I was right tbh- I think this might be like an up for interpretation game? Like you can just take it however you think is true?

The monster feels like they want to be a part of the world, but at the same time they're scared, and get anxious from things as simple as opening doors.
I still think it might be a refelction of the protag though, as at the beginning of the game, they mention they always count the steps and don't know why.

My theory is that, in the 'bad' ending, we become a being like that. We sort of... Become the same monster, and maybe the thing it put in your hand is just the same sense of desire.
