What a wonderful tribute to the treasured pianist! I was privileged to know Grigory, Grisha, as a friend, just a few years, after he won in the 3rd Tchaikovsky competition. I always got tickets from himself to his concerts in StPetersburg. Even though he was already a celebrity, he was still a down to earth young man. Yet he knew, what he wanted in his life and how to get it. Being a hard worker( he played piano for 10 hrs daily), he also found time for his parents, friends and his car. O, he loved his car, and knew its mechanics. In my conversations with him during our day car trips to the beautiful places outside of StPetersburg, we touched many subjects, including his plans for future and handling his fame. That fame certainly didn’t get into his head. I lost touch with Grigory when I left Russia, but never stopped following his concert life. He grew immensely in his artistic skills, matured and captured love and admiration of many around the world. And I’m happy, I still can hear him, although I couldn’t attend his life concerts and shake his hand after.

Schumann's music and couldn't understand why I felt this way, especially after hearing these pieces which I have enjoyed so much. So I sought to investigate my questions about my misgivings and happened upon the following, which I think so well explains Schumann and why I go from hot to cold listening to his various compositions: enjoy

  • @centrostudicarrara6264

Everything Schumann writes in this work (excerpts taken from and taken up in other works, album sheets, sketches of movements ...) is gold under the ashes; Sokolov, as an unparalleled pianist, turns it into platinum. It is a work that is rarely performed also because it is little understood, not having a precise structure like the Sonatas or suites of pieces like Carnaval or Kreisleriana; it really intimately reflects Schumann's soul, fiery, passionate and introspective at the same time.

Genius. Sokolov endows every moment with it's maximal significance. His tone is utterly remarkable - just listen to those mercurial high notes at 1:50. And his rubato! Has there ever been such a marriage of imagination and technique? Equalled perhaps, but never surpassed.
The Marsch Sehr Getragen, arguably the heart of the set (and tonally, a kind of inverted 'raindrop prelude') is at 19:03 (for those interested). And doesn't the Geschwindmarsch (39:08) sound just like one of Prokofiev's Sarcasms?! spikey asf.

      And Trifonov writes:
"Grigory Sokolov is a musical figure of intense magnitude, and one whose concerts are always awaited with great anticipation. Attending his performances, one may have the sensation of the sound possessing a nearly physical essence; it fills the entire concert hall with rare energy and lives in its own time sphere. Sokolov is a great example for young pianists of how much one can seek and find in a piece of music, and in so doing, elevate the listener above the mundane with it."

Looking back over quite a long period of time I have seen my appreciation for the music of Robert Schumann go from Indifferent to "Nice" to Very Nice to Very Interesting (skipping over the category "Interesting") to luke-Cool to (something like) unmodified Cool [using the Old-Fashioned definition of that word rather than, say, the one used to describe the pianism (and the person) of Bill Evans] to luke-Warm to Warm, to Intriguing to Captivating to (at times, even) Mesmerizing, BUT _
when I heard what Schumann's Music sounds like (literally) in the hands of Grigory Sokolov somehow a Musical Door had been opened for me - a deceptively simple-looking Door which I had passed numerous times, thinking that there was probably nothing remarkable on the other side of it.
Of course it could not be that Robert Schumann's Music had gotten any better. It had to be, then, that The Lessons of Life, in their unfathomable way, had made me less obtuse. Heretofore I had never even imagined that such a Humbling Experience could be so rewarding.

I wonder how this Chagall ceiling affects the acoustics? In my headphones it seems to have a good influence on the acoustics, concerning how few people there are in the audience...

@Enizker Yes, he is considered to be one of the greatest pianist of 20th century, so who else you would like to compare with, of course this is not competion, but listen to his the recording of this piece from Salzburg, it is great!
