Technically, they shouldn't. The tourney winner was ineligible due to d2 to d1 restrictions.
To put into perspective how much of an underdog FDU was, they lost basketball games to teams this year called "SIUE", "Longwood", "Hartford", "Queens", "Sacred Heart", "Stonehill", and "Central Connecticut". In fact, they didn't even win their conference. They only got invited to the tournament because the team that beat them in the conference final, called "Merrimack", was a D2 school so recently that their current conference contract didn't guarantee them an auto-bid if they win the conference until next year. And on top of all that, FDU already had to win a First Four game just to get to be a 16 seed against Purdue. To say "This is the biggest upset in tournament history" is an understatement. These young men (and their coaching staff) deserve all the credit in the world for somehow pulling this off.

I had Furman and Princeton reach the second round, resulting in a flawless bracket until Fairleigh Dickinson ruined it. My sister currently attends Fairleigh Dickinson for sports. My sister can share the experience that I had when I attended North Texas as a student in 2021 when our team stunned Purdue.

i watched the game and was rooting for the upset, but even with about 2 or three minutes to play, I expected Purdue to win it. No one could have predicted this outcome. It's unbelievable, and a huge embarrassment for Purdue, and also the Big Ten.

I saw FDU hanging with Purdue early and was thinking it could be like a Gardner Webb Virginia game. FDU has a nice little first half and it’s cool to be up at the half but then Purdue shows up and yeah. Then I saw the score with 10 minutes and Purdue still hadn’t pulled away. I decided to tune in with 3 minutes and wow
I was about ready to tune away whenever I saw Purdue go up by 6 points but then the jump shooter they fouled (don’t remember his name) really turned into a big momentum swing and brought the Knights right back into the game. Also, I knew once that 3 pointer got hit with a little over a minute left, that was the dagger. I just knew at that point Purdue lost the game, especially considering how horrible they were shooting the 3 ball.
FDU Princeton Furman (even Charleston and Kennesaw fought til the end). This March Madness has been one of the most exciting starts ever…who knows SDSU just steamrolls bama and Baylor and end up in the final four.

@@zermanman9891 well, every year I fill out 4 brackets on ESPN’s tournament challenge! In each one of my 4 brackets, I have a DIFFERENT 1 seed losing to a 16 seed! I also had Kansas, Houston, and Alabama out in each of my other 3 brackets! I wish I could find my 2018 brackets, because I pick UMBC knocking off Virginia and just LAST YEAR, I had St Peters in the ELITE 8

That's awesome how Sean Moore mentioned my school when asked when he knew they could do this. In the very first game of the season, FDU had a two point lead on my Ramblers. It took a last second shot by Sheldon Edwards to send the game to overtime. That's when I knew it was going to be a long season for my school's team. At the same time, I thought there was no way FDU should have had a KenPom ranking of over 300 like they had.

Fairleigh Dickinson goes from 4-22 last season to 21-15 this season by hired Tobin Anderson as Head Coach after Greg Herenda resigned as FDU’s Coach,lost to Merrimack in the Northeast conference Championship,being selected to the First 4 after Merrimack is Ineligible for NCAA Tournament by Defeating Texas Southern then pull off the biggest upset in NCAA Tournament history as a 23.5 Point Underdog. FDU became the second 16 Seed to defeat a 1 Seed (2018 UMBC vs Virginia)

What an accomplishment for a #15 seed to knock off the #2 seed, then the #1 seed. That's why they call it March Madness! I enjoy March Madness because there is always a Cinderella team to to get behind and cheer for! I would warn them though, to keep grounded and not get a big head. Usually the Cinderella teams get beaten by a team seeded in the middle of the bracket. Would like to see them keep winning though.

Purdue once again proves why they are in the conversation for worst choke artists. In my mind Virginia is also in this conversation. Yes UVA won the year after they lost to a 16 seed, but since then they've also continued a path of choking big upsets.

So if they become a 3 seed one year and lose to a 14, then they’ll go down as the first team to lose to every single double digit seed and they would basically be in the ultimate Pit Of Misery at that point.

Purdue embarrassed the Big Ten with the worst loss in tourney history. FDU was ranked 298 and didnt even win their conference. They played on a Big Ten Court.
