- this is a view of the giant granite rock 50 miles west of Casper Wy- it is known for being a landmark for the pioneer travelers heading west on the Oregon, California and Morman Trails as well as the Pony Express -these landmarks helped the pioneers negotiate the rough travel - and they say you had to be at Independence rock before the 4th of July in order to make the rest of the Westward trip without encountering snow and bad weather
