When I was a kid in the 1970's my grandma strung a large button on a string and showed me how to spin it. I grew up kind of poor and my siblings and I didn't get a lot of toys for Christmas or on our birthdays, so that button and string toy was a kind of cool toy back then. I haven seen anyone play with a button and string toy since then. Now seeing that same kind of device being converted to a centrifuge is awesome.
I had a toy like that when I was a kid, it had a plastic ball in the middle with a pattern instead of a button though. So someone must have had the same idea as your grandma and started selling it! this was in like 2000, you should have patented it before that toy company did, you'd be rich now lol

During the Manhattan project the U.S. developed handheld nuclear grenades. It was never deployed because they figured that no soldier would want to carry something that couldn't be thrown far enough to not kill him upon explosion.

These dudes are not just smart, they're ingenuous! The way they perceive the world around them is fascinating and incredible, and they put their minds to absolutely great use!
It wasnt invented at all in stanford, they just innovated on an ancient microscope design known as a leeuwenhoek single sphere lens microscope. There is a massive difference between inventing something and innovating upon sonething, Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek deserves all the credit for the original design as well as over 100 microscope patents that HE INVENTED from 1640 - 1723 and is recognized as the father of microscopy and microbiology.
Zacharias Janssen is also credited for making one of the first microscopes but there isnt a clear date as to when. Only that he did it "around 1600."
@@Charles-hq7ce i'll defer to the one who invented more than 100 different microscope patents to the one who "supposedly" only made one, because for all we know it was stolen. there were also variations of microscopes invented by the church for transcription but since they didn't zoom into microscopic levels they dont really count.

I saw a water cleaning ball on Dragons Den, as you dragged it along it purified the water making it safe, the Dragons offered deals but the inventors didnt take any of them, I have never seen it since ?

For people who own personal digital cutters like a Brother Scan N Cut, cricut, cameo, etc the foldscope could be sold / downloaded as a .SVG to be cutout by anyone with one of these types of machines. The lens and a light source are all that remains for the physical portion of it. Or use the built-in scanner on the ScanNCut to make a cut-to-data version of the paper portion of it. Ditto for the disc portion of the centrifuge.
It takes a truly smart person to make something so brilliantly simple. What an incredible contribution to accessible medical science.
