Summary: I met with Manu Prakash from Stanford to talk about 2 of his labs' inventions the Foldscope and the Paperfuge. Combined these cost only 68 cents and they can be used to diagnose Malaria. Both of these are examples not only of simple, brilliant design, but of how engineering is used to make a positive dent in the world.

It wasnt invented at all in stanford, they just innovated on an ancient microscope design known as a leeuwenhoek single sphere lens microscope. There is a massive difference between inventing something and innovating upon sonething, Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek deserves all the credit for the original design as well as over 100 microscope patents that HE INVENTED from 1640 - 1723 and is recognized as the father of microscopy and microbiology.

@@Charles-hq7ce i'll defer to the one who invented more than 100 different microscope patents to the one who "supposedly" only made one, because for all we know it was stolen. there were also variations of microscopes invented by the church for transcription but since they didn't zoom into microscopic levels they dont really count.
