The division of the surface of the grenade into blocks was primarily to enhance the user's grip. It was HOPED, as a side-effect, that it would also enhance fragmentation, providing a more even distribution, but this did not turn out to be the case in practice. The casings are rough cast and quite uneven internally, and the production of fragments was inconsistent.

  • @FluffyDragonDrawing

The idea makes a lot of sense, but also to consider. The human body has a lot more mass between the air cavities and the force of the water than a balloon does. Our body wouldn't rely on the air inside to keep it's shape, we have a little something called bones.
I think it would be helpful to see how much damage the shockwaves like that would do to bone and muscle, instead of just air and rubber.

Human bodies are actually pretty resistant to shockwaves we can survive being blasted by an over pressure wave of 20 to 40 psi. That is within a nuclear bombs severe destruction zone! The danger from the blast wave lies more with being thrown into solid objects from the blast/resulting winds or objects being thrown into you(that is aside from the thermal and ionizing radiation issues the one will also have to consider ofc).

Air compresses, water does not. A thunderstorm 20 miles away is almost silent. But an undersea earthquake can cause tsunami waves for 200 miles.
So, how close to a ground earthquake do you have to be to actually feel it? Does the ground absorb shock waves too?

Not safe. You're more likely to lose your leg. While grenades have a designed time to go off (varies depending on the grenade), it usually explodes earlier than that. By kicking the grenade, you're taking the chance that it won't explode until it's already a few meters underwater.

If the grenade is on the land then jumping into the pool would be much safer. As mentioned in the video, air between the grenade and the pool is compressible so the blast wave going through the water would be too weak to hurt you.

Dude in water is dead. My homie was in the navy. When they were on small river boats a guys job was to chuck a grenade over every few minutes. If someone was trying to swim up and get on the boat the would basically turn to goop
