I visited Dr. Scott Nicholson in Brantford, ON Canada since he is the world expert in Escape Room design. After meeting with him for a day here are the 10 tips I came away with to beat any escape room:
    1. Think simple
    2. Searching
    3. Organize your stuff
    4. Focus on what is stopping you
    5. Team roles
    6. Lock types
    7. Code types
    8. Written clues
    9. Look for patterns
    10. Your guide is your friend

As someone who works at an escape room, I can confirm that all of these tips are valid and EXTREMELY helpful! I already tell customers some of these, but I'll definitely be telling them the rest now!
Another tip I use is to not be afraid to ask for hints. At my job, we give unlimited, so people are usually more willing to ask for help. But even if you're limited and you're really stuck, some times one clue is all you need to continue the room.

@@cccooper472 it depends on the room. Most of the ones I've done were with 4 or 5 people and it was perfect, but I know about one were you need to have between 8 and 10 participants (that is way less common). Also, in all of the ones I've been to you only see the person working there at the beginning to explain the story and at the end when you escape and they offer you a picture

As an escape room enthusiast, I can say that most of these tips will keep you in the room forever. They are only suitable for very basic rooms for beginners.
In normal escape rooms, the puzzles can be much more difficult. Keys, codes, passwords, hints can be found in lamps, in sockets, and in the most unpleasant places. Sometimes locks need to be picked using master keys found.

    1. Think simple, a well designed escape room won’t be that complicated
    2. Search once you enter the room, but search carefully so you don’t mess things up
    3. Organize your stuff, make sure you aren’t redoing clues
    4. Focus on stops, you can do this, don’t think otherwise (work backwards and pull back your thinking)
    5. Team roles, project manager, and certain people for certain clues
    6. Lock types, know which lock is which and which codes they need
    7. Code types, make sure you know short and long lines are braille
    8. Written clues, look for abnormal patterns in writing
    9. Look for patterns, this literally explains itself
    10. Your guide is your friend, listen to instructions so you don’t royally mess something up

Me and my group were convinced something would happen if we would use it, like a light starting to shine or a curtain going up (revealing something). Final solve for an escape room I did was a number lock. To get the number, we had to solve a math equation, which we found by turning off the lights to the room and shining two different laser pointers at specific angles from two different spots in the room, and the various mirrors create the said math equation. Finding the laser pointers, where to put them, what angle to put them at, all required separate series of puzzles on their own.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention what in my opinion is the biggest piece of advice: don’t go opening random things for no reason or pulling random things off shelves. It gets messy and hard to keep track of what you really need to do. Instead start by focusing on things you can easily see around the room. Most of the time the first clue will be written on a wall, or there will be an open book or a newspaper, or a stopped clock, something that can give you an idea of what you’re looking for.

I would say that everyone working working on one puzzle can be counter intuitive at times. For example, there may be two different puzzles that have clues scattered around. So if you immediately hone in on one, you may miss clues for the second. In addition, its better to have everyone working on different ones instead of one singular, since then you can come up with solutions for all three in that time instead of one.

I work in an escape room haha. For those of you who get frustrated about the red herrings, the thing is, they might not actually be red herrings. We are trained to make you escape the room so that you are proud of your achievement so sometimes when players take too long to solve some enigmas, we unblock others so that you move along to the end faster so that you are able to finish on time. In the escape room I work at, the rooms are designed not to have any red herrings but if players are not going fast enough, we can skip steps in the game so that they get the satisfaction of having escaped :)

I have done a few escape rooms and went to one with a couple friends. They decided to take it easy because there was just one room, surely there can't have that many puzzles, right? Well, as I suggested early on, turns out the bookshelf was hiding a second room. We only had 15 minutes left when it opened

I'm not even sure I've done an escape room without there being multiple rooms in some way. Hidden in a wardrobe, through a second door, and players starting in separate rooms and work into a center one are ones I remember.

5:02 - The escape room we did the other night we lost a lot of time because I was certain that the giant clock on the wall that was stuck at 1444 had to be a clue. We made it to the very last puzzle when time ran out.

A giant digital clock stuck on a time? A time with 4 numbers (which is a common amount of numbers to unlock something), yeah that's a bit of a mean red herring to put in. You had reason to believe that could have been a clue.

@@Death-999 It was a giant analog clock, and the time on it was 2:44, I just assumed since it wasn't moving that it was a clue, and that 2:44 in military time was 1444 so that had to be a code. Turns out it was just a clock and the battery had died at 2:44

Another tip: Don't be like the boys I was grouped with on a middle school field trip to an escape room. If you get a sword, don't derail the entire rest of the group by attacking them with it for the final 20 minutes of the allotted time :/

I wouldn't say mostly, but math (or visual logic) is a significant portion of it. I've done a few escape rooms in China (they're crazy popular here) without speaking hardly any Chinese, and I'm only useful in about half the puzzles.
