  • If Mexican isn't a race, then what race are they? Today, we're going to be discussing the racial makeup of Hispanics and Latinos in Latin America and the United States, and the history of the region.
    The situation of race and ethnicity in Latin America is extremely confusing for both outside observers as well as for those who actually live there, and I'm going to attempt to shed some light on the situation, which I can largely relate to. I've been studying the region for a long time, and although I'm not an expert, I do know a bit about the subject through speaking to my many Hispanic friends, and reading about the subject.
    Be sure to let me know your thoughts on Latin America and Latinos! Thanks for watching!

      What's the context behind that word ? Referring to Latinx

      @straysheep5312 5 개월 전 +88

      @@magikarp1666 LatinX is simply a gender neutral way of referring any Latino. "Woke" people were getting annoyed that they had to say Latino(a) to include both men and women. So the "political correct" way to refer to the Latino population is by saying "LatinX".
      Between you and me, it's like when you have to deal with having a conversation with someone that has proper pronouns...

      @@straysheep5312in both the Spanish and English language when referring to a mixed gender group of people you use the male version.
      English group you say, "hey guys"
      Spanish group "hola ninos"
      At least that's what I've learned from Duolingo and college Spanish classes.
      Idk why people are acting like it's a brand new thing they need to fight against. Misgendering a man has always been viewed as the worst thing ever.

      I very respect Mexicans. In my country, people are not united. Nobody wants to recognize their own person in everyone. Chechens, Tatars, Russians, Yakuts, Bashkirs - all are nationalists. But foreigners know us all as "Asian, Caucausian and Slav Russians".
      Our country, Russia, is the largest only because it has remained an empire. The Spanish, British, Ottoman, Japanese, French, Portuguese Empire collapsed, and the Russian Empire simply changed its name to the period of socialism, and in the 90s again headed for imperialism and the dominance of Slavic Russians.

      Latino is simply short for "Latin American" (Actual or of descent) because we couldn't tell where someone was originally from because of looks, accent (if). (or course many Hispanics- Latinos don't speak Spanish at all) so we said: Mira un "Latino"! Most used Hispanic (which I deem more appropriate and less confusing) Hispanic as in of Latin American origin. (Of course there are plenty of White, Indigenous, Asian, Black Latinos apart from the various Mestizo mixes. All this hogwash is so tiring. (Cameron Diaz, Linda Carter,(original Wonder Woman) Catherine Bach, Raquel Welch, Linda Ronstadt (Cali Governor's girlfriend) Rita Hayworth and many others are "Latinas" "Hispanics" "Mexicans" "Spanish".

Those dances with the Haka dance and tattoos are all to honor them. It's like going back to America and expecting it to be indigenous but finding everyone else there . The truth is people are always migrating and the idea of whites come from europe and blacks from africa, asians from asia ect work most of the time but not in many cases, in which the smithsonian will sweep it all under the rug. Like the original population of new zealand . It's something no one wants to touch ,but the remains are still there.

    • @SconionRunion
      @SconionRunion 9 개월 전

      While nationality is real, race is a lie. Science is the ultimate barrier against lies.there are no white people let alone a white race.There are no yellow people let alone a yellow race, the same with red people and a red race. There are however, brown and black people , but you will never hear a brown person refer to himself as a brown. Africans in the diaspora refer to themselves as black, but that is because of the influence of the European criminals who forced them into bondage and removed all knowledge of their prior culture, language, and religion, and imposed their European names and everything else on them. If you travel to Africa you will never hear an African refer to himself as a black, even though his skin color might be jet black. I am Nigerian and Kenyan. As long as you deny the truth and play the silly race and color game you will be lost in the BS that it is based on, and that BS is based on bigotry.

      The 20% trace amounts is likely Middle Eastern blood, because before Spaniards left Europe to colonize the Americas, Arabs had conquered Spain for over 700 years, and so a lot of Spaniards have admixture from the Middle East. This explains why there are Spanish & Hispanic people with similar features to middle easterners (tan skin, full lips, dark hair/eyes). Southern Italians are also proven to have on average around 28% middle eastern admixture, which is why they get made fun of by central and northern Italians who are fully white.

      So if to you and a lot of other people claim that Mexicans are of mixed race, what are the 27 million indigenous cultures of Mexico? i will tell you what and who they are, they are the true 100% Mexicans the original people of Mexico! The name/word Mexico and mexicano is derived from the Nahuatl word (mexica), the original tribe/tribes better known in the modern time as the Aztecs. So this false idea that all Mexicans are mestizos is a myth! The base of what is known today of the Mexican culture come from the original tribes/cultures of Mexico. 68 different languages spoken in Mexico plus much more dialects combined they equal around 200. Spanish supposedly is the official language of Mexico but the spanish spoken in Mexico is so mixed with words that are indigenous or are derived from a indigenous language and are not found in the spanish dictionary. Mexico is known as an indigenous country because of the so many indigenous cultures, its history, traditions and folclore. So Mexico and Mexicans is more indigenous than what you think they are!

That 'unknown' friend turned out to be a Moroccan Muslim, head gear, long robe et al. Well groomed beard, mustache and dark glasses (Ibn Saud came to mind). He almost had me going and laughed as I stood there, a bit puzzled looking.
    Later, his claim that many Mexicans' backgrounds were a mix of different races, such as Spanish/Portuguese, Northern Africans and even New World Indios, got me thinking. I couldn't stop, but look at him over and over that evening.
    Ever since then I began to look at Mexicanos with different eyes, such as "what would this guy look like, if he wasn't wearing jeans and t-shirt, but a turban and flowing robes" ? And why not? After all, the (darker skinned) Moores had a significant presence on the Iberian Peninsula before America was discovered and - I assume - some of the Spanish crew would have been made up by men who looked just like my friend. i would say that this video is very accurate, but failed to mention one little detail. tthere are some couuntries were the racial groups are more or less divided in the sicoal contex, for example, countries like mexico, venezuela, colombia, ecuador (mainly the grand colombia ones) are the ones with the most persistent "mestizo" race and as such you can see that these coutris are more race-blind than for exapple, brazil (whre the doominance of the portuguesse royalty lasted loger because they had to flee when napoleon conquered them), argentina, that has a clear betwen navitive and erupean descendents, same as chile, and there are even cases of extreme racial dominance by afrodescendent coutries, like Haiti, cuba, and puerto rico.
    i hahve to say that liiving in brazil for 5 years now, i miss the acctual colorblindnes from venezuela/colombia/mexico, it is trully something that you have to live to feel, and i dont know if a foreigner could get to feel it on just a trip, you kinda have integrate to the socieety and be conseired a part of it to take off the label of "visitant" to "famiily".

      @Truth Be told Mexica is the name of the principal tribe of the Aztec empire and is in the Shoshonean language family. The name Mexico had no meaning in the nahuatl language sub family and was inspired by the word Mexica, and incorporated into the region or colonies of Spain, and used by the white "Mexicans " when they rebelled against their " white mother country ". The country of Mexico was invented, and it's independence from Spain was declared by the white men who defeated the native Indians of Mexico and stole their lands. Mexico was not declared independent from Spain by Native Americans nor was Mexico established by Native Americans for Native Americans. American Indians had no rights when Mexico was established. It was established as a white country for white people, just like the United States of America.

    At 8.25, the comment says half-white/half native American while showing a young woman that looks totally European. It seems that many people in the US assume that if one person does not have a northern European kind of look (well, pale skin/blue eyed/light haired, etc.) means that this person is not European, or that this person must been mestiza…
    It is a deep misunderstanding of what is Europe. Europe is not only northern Europe. At least Half of Europeans, if not more, are not fitting this stereotype that many US Americans seems to have

    Years ago I worked with a group of engineers from Mexico. Most of them would have probably described themselves as mestizo. One of them, however, was a blonde-hair, blue-eye guy with a German last name. At first I thought he was Argentinian - our company had operations in that country at that time, and many Germans has settled there - but to my surprise, this gentlemen informed me he was Mexican. He told me that he was a descendant of a group of German immigrants to Mexico in the late nineteenth century. It was then I started to ask more questions and seek answers to came to the conclusion that Mexico is a racially diverse nation.
    Panama - that is similar to Brazil in very racially diverse.

First and foremost the "european" Spanish are not "white", but rather heavily mixed with northern africans. Also the south, central americans are heavily mixed with arab, Spanish(also arabe) and native americans. What happened in south america is basically in line with with Spain itself is, a big mix. Spain really has nothing to do with northern europeans, like German, Danish, Swedish, and physically do not look like them at all.

      i lived there and i was so surprised to find out that there are way more tanned skin people with indigenous traits than in Jalisco, Nayarit, Sonora, Sinaloa, etc
      Mayans have not light skin at all, they are tanned, brown, etc

    I remember when I was answering the format needed to apply for a student visa in the US, when they suddenly asked me my race. I was sooo confused, I almost had an identity crisis haha. I filled the square where it said "Hispanic/Latino" but then there was this option to compliment it with "White" "Black" "Native American" and "Asian". I was like "Well, for sure I am neither black or asian, but I don´t think I am white enough to be considered white, Or am I?" so I called an american friend and asked her:
    "Hey, Do you think I am white enough to be considered white for American standards?"
    And she was like: "I think you are, you don´t have dark skin and your face doesn´t look indigenous to me, it´s more like Southern Europe or maybe even a Middle East appearence. For an average American, you are a hispanic white."
    But then my cousin interrupted us and said: "What are you talking about? Sure you are not white. When I studied in the US they almost considered me black. If you don´t have blond hair, blue eyes and transparent skin, you are not white for them. Plus, do you feel ashamed of your roots? Do you want to reject your Native American ancestors and pretend you are European?" And that last part was the once that convinced me, and I simply left the square marked as "Hispanic" with no other specification. It was such a weird question for me.
