And that was after she did her two dramas and she worked with other guys and realized no one comes close to matching her personality and humor like Sungjae did. So they get together in 2018 😆. So since people are tossing their theories out there, I figured I would add mine. FYI I’ve left this comment on different videos before, but a lot of people seem to agree that it’s the most realistic hypothesis so thought I would share here to see the reaction! Second FYI, this comment is super long so buckle up... Lol. Here it is:
So, as much as I wish it wasn’t true, I don’t think they are together or ever have been. Bc I think if that were the case, Dispatch def would’ve come out with it by now. I think the reality is they both did catch feelings and coincidentally RV got huge after the show (Joy in particular) so she had no time for dating, so Sungjae was kinda left on sidelines with no opportunities to really ask her out.
Not to mention given RV’s busy schedule & SM’s reputation I’m sure the company wouldn’t really allow it or at least didn’t encourage it. They knew Joy’s their money ticket and that with upcoming film gigs and increasing CFs dating anyone - especially another singer from a show she was on - would jeopardize her position. Bc if they did date, then when people watch her acting on other dramas or doing press interviews with her costars they will say “Oh well you can tell she’s dating Sungjae bc these two have no chemistry” or “No wonder she’s dating Sungjae. There’s nothing between these two here.”
So having her single and without scandal is important for her brand and image as a famous singer and an actress. It’s also important from another business standpoint: scheduling. The less time she has to date or see a bf, the more time she has to focus on work and land gigs. And “stay focused” as the asshole CEOs would say - esp SM.
Lastly, I’m not sure that when she was on WGM she was even contractually allowed to date at all? I know their dating ban is over now but idk about back then... So that might’ve been another reason things never panned out. Because by the time the ban was over too much space had passed between them so dating wouldn’t be possible anymore.
But honestly I still think the real reason is not a dating ban. I think it’s bc of Joy & RV’s increasingly busy schedule after the show. I mean its no doubt that their group became more famous after 2015/16 and that Joy’s fandom grew exponentially as she turned more and more into a mature woman & talented actress. Meanwhile although BTOB is successful and Sungjae is an amazing actor/singer it’s not even comparable. (I mean I think he & the group are WIDELY underrated so don’t get me wrong - I think it’s really unfair/sad.) So it’s no surprise to me that while Sungjae has been rumored to have dated & had gfs since then, Joy hasn’t. It’s bc he’s had time to and his company has been more lax since there’s less eyes on him, while Joy barely has time to breathe with a packed schedule and SM’s notoriously strict eyes watching and monitoring her.
Point is, that’s why I think Sungjae wasn’t lying on that variety show when he says he hasn’t met with her since WGM bc she’s been so busy (he said they’ve both been busy but the implication was clear after she laughed and said “No, no, it’s not like that.. I’ve just been too busy” You can see she felt bad and that he wasn’t wrong.) But I don’t think this is for a lack of feeling: I think it’s very obvious on the show that she started to have real feelings for him. I think his feelings were slower to develop (much more like “Lets have fun, it’s a show!” & “Oh this girl is different/strange haha but maybe we can be friends”) but at the end he thought he would miss her as a little sister since they truly got close but then looking back he realizes he truly had feelings beyond that for her. With dudes sometimes it takes a sec, and Sungjae is def the funny immature playful type so I’m sure it didn’t really hit him till after, that maybe he liked her as more than just a close “noona.”
I think as he started dating other idols he realized even more how special and unique their time & connection was. He started missing her and regretting his actions even more as years went by, but worried it was too late now and too far gone. That’s why I do believe the song “Come With the Wind” is about Joy. A part of me does believe it might be delulu & far fetched, but another part really does see all the hints and similarities people have picked up on. Still, I’m not denying that it could be a coincidence and fans have gone nuts from lack of content haha.
But I dunno, I really do think that unfortunately they never dated or Dispatch wouldve come out w it at this point. I know some people think it was kept a secret from fan backlash but that’s not true bc at this point the Bbyu fandom is larger than any antis. It’s way past that now. So that’s def not the reason at all. And I don’t think the reason is that they were good at hiding it/dating in secret either, bc I really don’t think Joy had any time to date at all between her schedule as RV member and recurring actress. That’s an overwhelming schedule, so I think that’s the truth no one wants to admit.
But I do think Sungjae’s heart is still with her but he feels it’s too late now and that she’s too popular for him/he missed his chance. As for Joy idk. On the show it was easy to read her feelings but it’s been more difficult since then bc she has so little freedom and is not allowed to freely express herself in song or on social media. So it’s tough to know how she feels. I think she did truly like him on the show towards the end but didn’t think it was reciprocated. I think she was insecure and in her heart felt he didn’t see her in a romantic way but as a protective older brother. (And I think he was giving her those signs bc that is how he thinks he felt at the time.) And now I just think she’s too busy so it’s not on her mind as much. I think she’s “moved on” but still holds a soft spot for him in her heart. Like a fond memory of her innocence and when she was less busy and could be more herself. She just thinks he never reciprocated her feelings and since he never REALLY reached out in a romantic way after the show she thought they are just friends. And then as years went by, that fizzled too. (on her end.)
But I do think she wants a love life and I do wish that for her bc I just want to see her happy. I think being successful can only bring you so much joy as an idol, you know? I think time to have a partner and feel normal is just as important. But personal time is a luxury not many idols are afforded, sadly...
Now, I do wish they could come together at some point in future and give each other a chance, bc I think they are so well suited and had something special. And it’s a shame not to give smth you want a shot just bc you didn’t have time before. Truth is Sungjae, it may feel awkward, but it’s never too late! And sometimes its worth at least taking the shot. But if they don’t end up dating someday, then I just hope they’re happy w whoever they choose and that they find someone great! Bc they both deserve it.

It's been a year since the release of Sungjae's song "Come with the wind" which is for joy. Sungjae's song is for joy he can't straight up tell it to everyone because their careers depends on it sungjae is not dumb. He only use symbols which joy and bbyu shippers can understand. It is for btob fans too but the main purpose of the song is their memories and how he still loves joy.
It's been 5 years since WGM but but guys! Sungjae and joy still loves each other. Don't lose hope bbyu shippers remember every year there is something going on between them like the symbols in their IG's and joy emoji's, caption and many more!
