This was extremely helpful, I owned a Sculpt keyboard/mouse combo a few years ago and ended up using an older logitech when the Sculp failed. I had forgotten why it failed and I probably would have purchased another if not for this video reminding me that the dongle stopped working and I couldn't buy a new one. BTW,. I really appreciated the Nicaragua mission trip video, also very helpful.

ive had my k860 for over a year and passed on the sculpt at the time because i thought the layout was better,, but now looking at it, i think i need a more compact keyboard for my use case so my right arm isn't off to the right all the time.

I've been using the sculpt for about 6 years at work. Never had any failure like that other comment but maybe he just types a lot more. My only main issue is when I plug a USB 3.0 flash drive into my PC it interferes with the wireless signal. So then suddenly it starts missing key presses like you mentioned, but a lot, like every 5 to 10 key strokes. I googled the issue and found someone claiming it's caused by having a USB 3.0 drive connected and sure enough that is exactly when it happens for me. Also I think I don't like the detached num pad anymore. I use to like it a lot, but when I am typing fast and want to use the numpad, it annoys me sometimes when it's not in the exact spot I'm expecting it because it moved. I feel I gotta constantly adjust it. Main thing holding me back on the k860 is that price. At home I got the MX keys which I love because it's small, sleek, don't type long enough to feel I need an ergo, back lit keys, keys feel better, and cheaper! Why the hell is the k860 more expensive than the MX keys?

I had the MS for work for a couple of years. It only skipped key presses when its battery was low.
P.s. I’d love to see something like the Logitech but without the number pad. Why should it have to be so large?

I agree completely... I have the 860... if it was the same but the size as the ms-sculpt... I would buy it immediatly.
... the size is not practical if you want to move your keyboard around some bit... being flexible at your desk is also part of ergonomics

One suggestion for future viewers of this video. I have/had this same issue where sometimes the keyboard would just start missing keypresses, it always seemed to be intermittent for me, not happen for 3-5 hours then go a good 30 minutes where it just pissed me off. Unrelated, I had an issue with a z-wave dongle plugged into a pi4 decreasing performance, and the suggested fix was to put it on a USB extension. I did the same for the sculpt and just moved the dongle away from the case itself, and now I haven't had a resurgence of the problem in probably a year.

I used to own the Sculp keyboard for 4 years then I gave it away to a friend that still uses it every single day. It never missed a beat unless the battery was low. I ordered a new one today.

The missing keys issue can be fixed by turning off power save features of the USB it's connected to. I know, it sounds hokey but I had two of these on different computers - I had the missing keys issue on my 2nd computer (had it been on my first, I probably would have never even given the sculpt a chance).
In my case, I could swap the physical hardware and the trouble stated with the computer (this computer did not have trouble with other keyboards). After much head scratching, I later found someone saying this same thing on the web and that turning USB power saving features off fixed it for them. It worked for me too. Fast forward to today - I've had 3 different sculpts now over nearly a 10 year period and they never miss keys. My dongle is typically 2 to 3 feet away from the keyboard. Being a developer I also have no less than 5 phones sitting between my keyboard and the dongle, contributing interference right now. (3 iPhones and 2 Androids in case you were wondering LOL). My desk is a mess of wireless interference because of my Logi mouse, sculpt keyboard, 5 phones, WiFi router, and wireless charger all within a 2' radius of one another.
The one issue I have is when I type really fast (sometimes I'll burst into the >120 wpm range), the insert key will set itself, randomly. I've only ever noticed this in Visual Studio, so maybe it's a VS thing? The other issue I have (and this seems to be more a case by case with the sculpt) is that I am a programmer, sometimes I type the numbers 1234 REALLY fast when testing address fields and the like. Sometimes the scuplt gets confused and does this: 12432 (I actually made it happen here, first try, on my newest, month old sculpt). Other than that and the odd USB power save thing that only seems to happen on some computers), it's a well made keyboard that will last for years.
One last issue with the Sculpt, the dongle is paired to the keyboard. The reason I recently replaced my 6 year old Sculpt was not because it was having issues, it was because I put my laptop into my bag with the dongle down and damaged it. Rendered the keyboard into boat anchor/doorstop duty. The older dongles were longer and more prone to damage - the new dongle is tiny.
That all said, thinking about getting a K860 to test drive for a while since I need a 2nd keyboard so I can have two offices setup & not have to move my keyboard from location to location.

I've gone through at least 2 MS Sculpt back-to-back. I would toss the number pad in a box. I recently opted for the Logitech even though I was concerned about the extra space required by the keypad. So far I haven't noticed the couple extra inches missing from my desk. I had tried the battery replacement for the issue of failing to connect but even that didn't seem to solve the issue all the time. It is interesting how my fingers naturally go for certain keys and I'm hitting the wrong ones - I'm aiming for the Sculpt Delete and pounding away on the Logitech Insert. Minor inconvenience of adjustment just like when I started with the Sculpt. One interesting thing that I've noticed I do miss from the Sculpt - the keyhole in the middle of the keyboard. Turns out I was automatically using that to pull the keyboard closer to me when it is pushed forward. I've also eliminated 2 USB adapters since I had the Sculpt and had switched to a Logitech mouse - yay Bluetooth.

Not one of my microsoft sculpt ergos (had 5 already from the moment it was first released) had this issue. As well as I wasn't loosing any of their dongle.
And why don't you say about the numpad on k860 is making you work with your mouse in a stretch position?

It was a tough decision picking between the two but ultimately I had to go with the Microsoft Sculpt keyboard for a very specific reason. I am suffering from "mouse shoulder" where not having the numerical keypad makes a world of a difference. If wish there was a version of the logitech keyboard that doesn't have the num pad, which allows the mouse to be about 6 inches closer to the keyboard and thus minimizes shoulder movement. So far I have no complaints with the sculpt. I run linux os on my machine and so far I have not seen any connectivity issues. So, so far, I am pretty pleased with it. Fingers crossed.

Great video and like your presentation style and humor.
I’ve been using the MS Sculpt at Corp for the last 4 years and really like it. I have never had issues of missed key strokes as you did. I definitely agree that the inability to replace the proprietary receiver is a huge miss.
With work from home in 2020, I bought a Logi MX Keys and have loved it. Really like the unifying, replaceable, receiver and Bluetooth option. Also, at home I have a Mac Mini for personal use and the ability to instantly switch from work PC to Mac with the same keyboard is a game changer.
My Sculpt is now starting to have a couple of keys get sticky and the right space bar is getting loose so I was thinking of replacing it with the K860. This video helped me confirm that it is the right decision.

I went back and forth between these two keyboards 2 yrs ago, ended up keeping the sculpt due to right arm pain and the lack of number pad and consolidated arrow/home keys shaved off at least 3 inches of distance between keyboard and mouse. It's very comfortable to use. The bottom pad is not as easy to clean as id prefer, but magic eraser helps. Using number pad with left hand took getting used to. I also had same issue with lagging keys at first and almost sent it back, but discovered if I put the receiver directly into my laptop instead of the lenovo docking station (which is inches away from the laptop so should have been fine) it fixed the problem and no further key lagging until battery needed to be replaced maybe 1.5 yrs later. However, agree I shouldn't have had to do that and receiver needs to work better! I heard bluetooth keyboards can be lagging as well, which was a complaint on MS surface ergonomic keyboard which is bkuetooth only. Issue I had is the keyboard prevented my work computer from going to sleep, which is a problem due nature of sensitive information. So always had to remember not to get up and go to bathroom without putting it to sleep! I would pay more for the sculpt if they fixed these issues, it's relieved a lot of pain as I am now experiencing bc the R and T keys suddenly quit working on it 2 days ago and I'm using a regular keyboard, the Logitech mx keys bc didn't have the ergo or sculpt in stock. It's miserable, has permanent positive tilt and the number pad is giving me poor posture again, got to go! I guess I really need a keyboard with separate number pad feom now on. So I just found out about the Lenovo Go wireless split keyboard and it removes the number pad so going to order that. It is not quite as compact as sculpt since it has regular home/arrow key set up. Number pad available to buy separately if desired. It has cork hand rest, which might be easier to clean. Also has a vertical mouse option too. I've lenovo keyboards in past so hoping this will be compromise I need if could meld features from sculpt and the Logitech ergo together 🤞

I have had my Scuplt for over 5 years and it has always had the first key be missed after the keyboard sleeps from waking up. The separate number pad I don't use and it has an odd size cell battery, not a standard C?032, so when it died, I didn't put a new one in. Comfort wise it's great. Have just brought the Logitech K860 Ergo, but not received it yet.

I've been using Sculpt for several years now (actually going through second keyboard right now) and I have to say that I had some issues with connectivity, that just went away, most likely it's the 2,4 GHz band being heavily polluted. The misstypes you've mentioned went away when I basically moved wifi to 5GHz, but... second set and the numeric row gives me issues, especially when I try to rapidly type 1234 it just doubles one of the digits like 8/10 times... also the hand rest is really poor quality it wears off fast catching dirt and whatnot from hands, and I think it oxidizes quite fast leaving prone showing scratches from say fingernails, but apart from that it is really good, nice build quality, but I guess it's time to move to Logi

Thanks for the review, you have earned my like and subscription. I have been using the Microsoft Sculpt keyboard and mouse at work for the past 3 years and it was the best ergonomic solution for me hands down. When it works it works great. However, I have had several long periods where my computer will not detect the keyboard or mouse after changing the batteries. I have also noted the input delay when waking up or dropping characters while typing. The typing problem was usually fixed by changing batteries, it must use alkaline batteries and starts having problems when the voltage drops below 1.2 V. So I am looking for a replacement for the same reasons you like the Logitech. Your review helps me make the decision to simply take the leap to switch.

Great review. I'm here because work provided a sculpt (to replace my old Microsoft ergo keyboard w/ full-stroke keys.) Typing experience is pretty good but the number pad is UNUSABLE - several keystrokes to even get started, and only catches about 50% of them. I don't use the number pad a ton, but when I want to use it, I want it to work. Yup, I've tried replacing batteries, moving the receiver closer, etc. And as Michael points out - there's something off about the home/end/etc. keys.
Okay, off to buy a Logi K860 :)

I have been using Sculpt for a few years (keyboard + mouse combo). Build quality and connectivity option not the best in the world, and it's showing signs of wear and tear. But it works perfectly fine on all Windows laptops I have tried. Never drops a key. Can't use with a Mac though; the mouse simply doesn't work on a Mac, and the keyboard drops keys, or registers them with a long delay.
I also have the K860 and bunch of mechanical keyboards, but I keep going back to Sculpt. I really like the typing experience, and it has helped with the pain in my right wrist. I'll probably buy another one when mine is dead.

I bought the MS Sculpt because a podcaster i highly respected recommended it above all else. I experienced every single issue u described here. In total, I bought freaking 5 of these over many years. Thats how convinced I was any problems must be my fault, this guy recommended it after all. I am still writing this on a Sculpt, recently bought my last 2 for home and work. Now they BOTH have the same issues. Thats where i FINALLY lost my trust in the stupid keyboard.
I have had the MX Master mouse for years now and just couldn't be happier with it. I want the same for my keyboard. Ordered the K860 just now.
Oh and just to add some extra salt, here in Europe the Sculpt is 100 euros, the K860 is 120. Difference is way smaller. I have been stupid.

I've been using a sculpt for 8 years. The skipped keystrokes are a problem and its related to downward pressure on the keys. If you press them to lightly, they won't register. I'm wondering if the Logitech suffers from the same thing but to a lesser degree? The reason I ask is my Sculpts battery bay is in rough shape, a battery leaked and damaged the + input tip and I need to get another keyboard. I'm shopping options. Thanks for any feedback, this keyboard worked great until about the time the battery problem cropped up.

I've been working on the MS Sculpt for 7 years in the office and it never let me down. I had to replace it once but that was kinda my own fault because I used a slime to clean it but the slime was so stringy it caught on everything and went under the keys. When I tried to lift the keys out to get the slime out, I broke one key and it couldn't be inserted again. I tried other keyboards (ergonomic and standard) but went back to the MS Sculpt. I would love to try other keyboards and the Logitech seems really cool but I hate that the numpad is attached which makes the keyboard bigger and the mouse quite far away. With the MS Sculpt, the numpad always lies beneath the keyboard between my forearms and the mouse is really close. It'd be great if more companies came with keypads with separate numpads. I'm looking for a keyboard for my home office (doesn't need to be ergonomic) but standard keyboards don't lift up in the front, which I find is a necessity. Currently I keep the keyboard my company gave me rested on a gel handwrist rest so that it tilts in the right direction and the front is higher than the back. It works for me but I also miss the option of a separate numpad. Maybe I'll look for a small keyboard without numpad and buy a separate numpad... Or I take my MS Sculpt home and back to office - or buy one just for home office. I don't know yet what I'm gonna do.

The main 'reason' why the USB dongle can't be replaced is - its AES 128bit encrypted communication. Keys are assigned and paired in factory so no-one has access to it.
I was using MS Sculpt desktop set since it was introduced, which was about 10 years ago. Mine Sculpt ergonomic set arrived in a big nice white box, all was separated next to each other, not layered as yours set. And the USB dongle is quite big = its black part is as big as the silver part which is plugged inside.
But here I first heard about missing/dropped letter issue which is a very new thing to me. Is it because of the bigger dongle? Also my dongle has storage space in sculpt mouse, not in the keyboard.

After a week with borrowed gaming keyboard and testing K860 in shop - I can tell that best replacement for an 8 year old MS Sculpt keyboard is...a new set of MS Sculpt. I found an seller with unopened box for about $60 and I'm writing the response here on it. The responsivity of new keyboard is precise, all keys are on the right position. My table isn't that big so I am happy I can use the side numeric block when I need it.
Btw, have you noticed if you press the 'Calculator' button on Sculpt numpad - second press will minimize current calculator window and third press will recall the same calculator again? Compared to my Dell keyboard in office - multiple pressing of 'Calculator' button is giving me multiple instances, which is not that cool.

  • @johnnyboghean2242

I had the MS for a few years and lived it. Missing keys, never had the issue. However, recently it started typing wrong characters to what I press, multiple of them at one press. Two days without the batteries in seem to have solved it for now, but I think it is time to start looking for a new one.
The Logitech is very attractive due to the multi computer easy switch and one unifying usb receiver. But I will miss having the numeric keypad separate and the shape of the MS (open in the middle)

That's what I realized. When I connect to dongle to usb hub then I also miss some keys but directly connected it works pretty fine.
Currently it's connected thru my monitor usb hub. Somehow this has no connection problems.
I'm currently struggling in my choice cause I habe both devices for test here the only think what bothers me about the k860 ist the size. I always hit with my mouse. Or maybe my table is just to small.

I suspect it's just interference. The damn usb dongle is probably fixed to a specific channel and it collides with your regular 2.4Ghz networks around. Since there's nothing you can do to change the channel in the dongle, it may be useful to try to change the channel of your 2.4Ghz wireless router. If that doesn't work, it's probably the neighbour's wireless network that will need to be changed, and I don't have any suggestions about how to tackle that. Bluetooth has mechanisms of avoiding this, and it doesn't need a dongle.

I bought the sculpt recently and I noticed some strange behavior. I am fairly fast typer.
If I type 1234 quickly often times I get 12324. If I type 123 quickly I get 1232. So I thought its the connectivity issue many reported. I checked the batteries and they were new(1.6v). Kept testing and found other problematic combinations. Like typing 'xcvb' resulting in 'xcvbv'. So what is going on?
Well, I used the Microsoft's own anti-ghost test page to find out.
Turns out this keyboard is only 2KRO!. I have 10$ keyboards that are mostly 4KRO! I guess they had to reduce the wires because of the cutout. I type 'XSI' quickly and I get XsI. The keyboard can not detect all Shift 'x' 's' together if I hold more than one key pressed. so the S becomes s.
When I type fast often several keys might be held pressed at the same time and this is where the problem appears.
The keyboard can not detect all the 1 2 and 3 keys together so when I quickly press 1 and 2 and then press 3, 3 is not registered until my finger gets off '1' but at this point both 2 and 3 get registered and even thought I never lifted my finger off the '2' sometimes it gets detected as pressed after 3, so I get 1232! Its semi random. AND SO ANNOYING.
On top of that, Power management is so aggressive, it kicks in after 15 seconds so almost every time I start typing first letter is lost.
Oh I love the design so much but no, I had to send it back.
Bye bye Sculpt, our love was not ment to be!

I've been using the sculpt for probably 6-7 years. I've gone through probably 5-6 actual sculpt units. I guess you could take that two ways; I really like the keyboard, and it's a good product, so I continue to buy it over and over. Or, it has poor durability and needs constant replacement. I'd say, both are pretty true.
I just like the feel of the new plastic keys, and after a years worth of full-time 40+ hours/week usage, the sculpt key texture rubs away. And, the home-key "indicators" are basically non existent at that point as well. Not a huge deal, it's cheap enough to replace every 18-24 months without feeling bad about it.
I agree with the home/end/pgup/pgdown layout, it takes some significant getting use to (I still miss them probably 20-30% of the time).
The main reasons I continue to use this keyboard is a) ergonomics, and b) i like the actual typing experience on the primary 60 some-odd keys, and c) the form factor.
After all these years of not having a num pad attached to the keyboard, going back to a keyboard _with_ one sounds absolutely miserable. I tried it, once, when the sculpt 2 came out. I couldn't do it, so I sent it back.
By far my biggest complaint about the sculpt is that the function keys are absolute garbage. I was expecting you to mention how epically terrible they are. They feel bad, and they register super poorly. They're right up there with the touch bar on a mac book pro in terms of absolute worthlessness. I'd give these a slight edge because least they're tactile and somewhat usable vs the touch bar on a macbook pro.
All that said, it's been the better half of a decade since I've considered any competitor to the sculpt. Maybe it's time to have another look at the landscape. This K860 looks like an option, but I'm very skeptical of the attached num pad.
Anyway, thanks for the review and the direct comparison to the sculpt. It's exactly what I was looking for.

Would you recommend Logitech K860 for the "start with ergonomic keyboards"? I'm just looking for a switch as my arms and wrists get a bit painful after longer sitting. I've thought of K860 as it wireless, supports 3 devices (a plus for my multi-device setup) and well.. it's Logitech :P Is it worth trying as a first pick for first ergo keyboard?

Is it possible that I'm the only one who finds wrist pad on K860 irritating? Not the ergonomics or softness of the pad itself, but the finishing surface material is soooo unpleasant to touch and causes palms to sweat and heat. I even unmounted the pad cushin and find the bare plastic below it far more pleasant.

I have both the microsoft sculp for over 1.5 years now and it's the best I just got the K860 and my arm started to hurt it's because the mouse is so far away from the keyboard I have to make a V movement to go to the keyboar to the mouse with my righ hand. I also have the Microsoft Ergonomic mouse and the vertical MX mouse and I do not recomend the Vertical mouse I swiched to the Microsoft mouse again as the pain was more with the vertical mouse. I will use the keyboard more time (K860) so I get use to it but really it's far far better the Microsoft Sculp so far however the quality of the Logitech is superior or at least it feels like let's wait and see

I've had my Scult keyboard for 5 years. I still like it, but the F-Key row should have been made out of the same keys as the rest of the keyboard. The function key switch is dumb. Why is it not a key? The space between the left and right key blocks could have been smaller to make the footprint smaller. The less my hand has to travel between a mouse and the keyboard, the better. I love the fact I can move the numpad wherever I want. The sculpt mouse is utter crap. I'm glad I've never lost the dongle, though.

The big negative about the MS Sculpt is that the usb dongle is not replaceable. Break it, lose it... and the whole setup is no longer usable.

  • @michaelgonzales1719

Thank you for your time, Michael. You provided a lot of information. I agree, the Logitech connects to 3 devices at same time. But, it's more expensive. I do not have the typing problems you said about it not typing letters. And, I have no problems with starting to type after the computer sleeps on my desktop. I never have my desktop on sleep mode. We'll see if that becomes an issue with my new laptop. I like ergonomic design better of the sculpt and it's price. The Sculpt does work. Connectivity is a concern for me. As for the box. You got the simple box cause you get a slight discount if you buy the business version of the Sculpt and it comes in a non-branded box. Do you want to pay $5 more for a fancy box that says Microsoft on it? It depends on your money and if you are going to move the keyboard around from one physical address to another or share between multiple computers. New to this ergonomic market, I went with the much less expensive Sculpt.

EDIT: After writing this (on a K860), I found what I think is the best of both worlds keyboard on Amazon - DELUX GM902 in white and black. Yay!
I've had both the Sculpt and K860. I like the Sculpt for typing and for its compactness -- it's the perfect width (without the numeric keypad) that keeps my arms fairly straight, and less travel to operate my trackball MX Ergo. However, I also experienced the same weird keystroke issues that I can only attribute to the USB dongle. The palm rest does not last -- after a year, it looked like it was falling apart. Also the keyboard is useless if the dongle is missing. The dongle also takes up a USB port when it should be connecting wirelessly to the computer's bluetooth. The K860 definitely has better connections and ease of switching between 2-3 computers by bluetooth. I love that you can toggle the keyboard layout depending on OS you are using (Fn + O = Mac and FN + P = Windows). Typing on this is a dream. I don't like the built-in number pad on the right, though. It forces my hands to move to the left to type, and the distance to operate the trackball is not ideal. I constantly need to shift the keyboard depending if I'm typing heavily or doing more trackball work. For now I can live with this. I'm just hoping for a Logitech upgrade that enables us to detach the keypad.

Sculpt vs K860: Sculpt is much more comfortable for fast typing. The rounded shape of the wrist pad with slightly concave corners give sound support to wrists and better access for keys on edges with your weakest fingers. Shift and Control keys are large and impossible to miss. Cursor keys are easy to find in the corner of the keyboard. Delete and Backspace keys are large and positioned perfectly next to each other. Space tab is divided and quite short: perfect for non-English typers, because the Right-Alt key is within easy reach of your thumb, without the need to curl it in too much.
In terms of long and fast typing - Sculpt is the best things since sliced bread (meaning the first Microsoft Ergonomic keyboard which they failed to recreate recently). I tried a dozen different solutions, including weird things like Kinesis Freestyle Edge, and settled on Sculpt. This is subjective, naturally, and I use the keyboard principally for fast typing.

Bought the ms sculpt yesterday... it's amazing.
Knowing this design is already almost 10 years on the market... they really nailed it back then.
I've worked with the k860 for +6 months... it's great... but way to big.
... the size of the k860 undermines the flexibility of a dynamic desk.
The ms sculpt answers to that... plus the form-factor is great as well.
Logitech should respect their customers and release a small version of the k860.
