They like closed one way entrances only until they are cornered in it, then they never use it again. We had a cat that used to lay in a cat bed that had an entrance for him to come in and out. One of our cats that didn't like him, cornered him in it and attacked him. He didn't have a way to defend himself or to get out. He never used that cat box/bed again. It depends on the cat, though. Our two older cats hate cat beds that have sides and an entrance. They like the open cat beds better.

Here’s a tip: cats will always prefer spaces with only one way in/out. It’s a evolutionary trait that comes from cats in the wild having to always know where potential threats can come from, and it’s easiest to only have one entrance to have to watch instead of needing to watch all angles. The box just happens to be taller than the cat, so he can see out of the entire top of the box at the same time.
Alternatively, you can just put a wall behind the cushion.
