- WHAT IF ISABELA MARRIED MARIANO?
In this alternate universe Casita doesn’t lose its magic and the engagement dinner goes ahead uninterrupted. Mariano proposes to Isabela and she has no choice but to say yes. She goes through with the arranged marriage because she doesn’t want to disappoint her family and most especially her Abuela who wants her to have the perfect life she never could. Abuela sees herself and Pedro in Isabela and Mariano and this is something Isabela recognises and feels obligated to fulfil for her grandmother.
Isabela has always held a lot of her true feelings in as the ‘Golden Child’ of her family, the eldest sibling and the eldest grandchild. In a family full of gifted people that support their small mountainous Colombian town, Isabela has a lot ridding on her marriage. She could give Abuela her first great-grandchild who would lead the next generation of magical gifts which protect the town and uphold the Family Madrigal name amongst Encanto’s citizens.
Isabela never got to express her true feelings like she did in the movie to Mirabel. What kind of person would she become without that moment to free herself? What kind of dark state would her mind be in? After all, a person can only endure so much for the sake of their family until they reach their breaking point.
Both of Isabela's Alternate Universe Songs form part of an Encanto Alternate Universe Mini Series that I have created within my main Alternate Universe Series. This mini series follows one alternate timeline in Encanto that started with Isabela's first Alternate Universe Song where she married Mariano. it makes so much sense that this would have happened if Isabela married Mariano. She'd eventually let out of those feelings she's been pushing down and her gift would go crazy
And then Abuela would make her feel bad about it and it all gets worse. She'd probably be lumped in with Mirabel.
The truth is that if that had happened in the movie I would have liked Isabela to end up as the villain afterwards, it would be something epic and incredible, well that's my opinion🙃
I think that would've been a way more interesting scene
What I think is a shame about this, is that we see Marianos personality in the film and in here, and that in this timeline he would probably have been a great husband, but since the marriage was forced, it erased all attraction from her side. If they'd been able to have more time together like her original love interest, maybe they would have worked out and he helps her get through her problems like a husband would in a relationship.

I also like how he isn't made into a villain or abusive monster here. It isn't that there's anything _wrong_ with him, it's the fact that Isa just doesn't _love_ him. She probably _cares_ for him, but care is different than love.

Wow Isabela’s relationship with Mirabel is much more healthy. Isabela isn’t mean to Mirabel like she is in the movie and Isabela is more vulnerable and kind. Also she looks alot kinder and gentler then in the movie as well and her behavior towards Mirabel is nicer and kinder
Isabela was angry at the very start, but I think depicted here she sees that Maribel sees through her facade. Also, Isabela isn't angry with Mirabel, she's jealous. Being a family failure is sad, but it also comes with the freedom to do whatever she wants. The wedding was Isabela's last chance to break free of her prewritten destiny, but she went along with it to appease expectations. At that point I think she would just lose all emotion and become broken husk with an empty smile.
It isn't that black and white, the whole point of the movie is to show how forcing people to follow your rules and expectations eventually wears them down, whether they want to or not. This is simply a different way to tell the story. Mirabel's encouragement is what helps Isabela come out of her shell, and learn to be true to herself. She finally grows something that isn't perfect, like the role she's been assigned to play as the oldest daughter. Here, her encouragement isn't enough, it's what could have happened, a pretty dark ending for her family and the villagers depending on whether or not she's able to undo all those vines from covering the village.
The thing to remember about movies is it's all about perspective. Encanto was Largely from Mirabel's perspective so we saw Isabella as she perceived her a mean girl or "spoiled entitled Princess" as Mirabel gracefully puts it

The whole conflict between Isabela and Mirabel exists because they're jealous of each other lives.
Mirabel sees Isa as someone with perfect life, who gets anything effortlessly and has their grandma's approval. She wishes she had it, but she feels like a nobody without the gift, she's not even included at the family photo.
Meanwhile, Isa gave up being herself, and decided to meet everyone's expectations. From her perspective Mirabel is free-she can do whatever she wants and even if she messes up, nobody really cares.
Girls are just jealous of each others lives, seeing only the things their own are missing, ignoring the negative sides.
The fact that the phrase of isabela’s thoughts remain as “what else can I do?” where the original version is an curious inquiry of inspiration while without Mirabel’s intervention there is only despair. Also the suffocating pressure as the oldest and fear of her familia’s disapproval is so meaningful and heartbreaking to me🥹❤️. This is very creative canonical view of this route.👍🏽

I actually felt bad for her being the oldest in my family as well is one the hardest things to experience even having to be the one everyone has to look towards to
It's hard for any one as being the youngest with the most intelligent and beautiful sister, is hard I feel often pressured to be better and be more like them
Was Isabella oldest? I thought Louisa was. I may have misread. Even with Louisa as oldest, Isabella was obviously considered the most likely to marry first and "continue the legacy". Blech

The saddest part is that Mariano would never make Isabela "do everything his way."
He is genuinely such a kind guy. He liked Isabella. That's expected. That's fair, I mean look at her! But he seemed to know that he wasn't genuinely in love with her. The guy was so full of love and he would have cancelled the engagement if there hadn't been an incident. He wouldn't want to force her.
All the pressure is from Abuela and, indirectly, the rest of the family. Most of all, it's from herself. Isabela took what was said and done to her and she internalized it. Most of her worries and feelings were things she came up with and fuled.
Abuela is actually making her do this, though, lol. The family actually has these expectations of her and her gift because she was never allowed to be anything other than perfect. Any imperfection was looked down upon by Abuela. I agree that Mariano would never force her to do everything his way, at least from the movie, although he could be pushy.
The word play is breath taking in this;
With the original's "What else can I do" being "What can I create now that I'm free from expectations" but in this version "What else can I do" being "I don't want to do this but what other choice do I have?"

im genuinely sobbing 😭😭 this is beautifully animated and the lyrics are so well written. i love this interpretation of what wouldve happened, it makes me so sad and i cant express my feelings in words. the end having her truly breakdown just shows how bad it would become if she didnt get to vent her feelings before it was too late.

How much you wanna bet Dolores probably worried about falling in love with anyone because of that? She would have been eleven when she heard that vision. So, that means any first loves, little crushes, anything like that, she'd have had that in the back of her mind. She would probably even try her hardest not to develop feelings for anyone at all, since she figures he'd eventually be taken from her anyway. But since she can hear a pin drop, and Luisa's eye twitching, NOT hearing Mariano was never an option for her.

I've always been confused about this line bc well, bruno saw her future, that means that even if the marriage with isa never happened, dolores still won't be the one he chooses right? Bc it's still the future, unless they managed to somehow change it
this was beautifully sad and it shows again, how much isa gave for her family to the point of fully destroying herself. even the detail in the wedding hall where doloris was sad in the background, magnificent!

I like that they do show Mariano true. He's a sweetie and we all know if she told him he'd fall over himself to have let her have the life she wanted [except obviously married to him]. Like she'd say she wanted a cactus and he'd probably learn to take care of them just to show her that "You have a gift but I can do things too!" And to show his genuine looks of concern in the animatic is extra nice. Love for these characters and who they are without bending their personalities to fit the narrative is clear as day here. Beautiful work!

As an artist I feel as though if I am able to change the meaning of a song (without completely altering it to something like minor key) through the way I sing it with a new musical arrangement, I am able to capture a totally different essence to what was originally intended which is quite complicated to do at times!

I think the most painful part is the bit near the end where it seems like she's adjusting and trying to find happiness in it. Not because it's any sadder than the peak moment, but because it shows just how much she's accepted it as the way things are.
I'm crying. an inspiring melody turned into something heartbreaking is simply incredible. I love how you were able to represent Isabella's feelings with your beautiful voice. ❤
It was always heartbreaking, though.
It hurts so much for Isa, but I also feel so bad for Delores. I see her getting comforted by Camilo at around 1:26 in the background. So much heartache all the appease the family and carry on a dream they themselves didn’t have.

This. Exactly this. From the time she was told by Bruno that the man of her dreams would be just out of reach, ten years if I'm not mistaken, since Mirabel is fifteen and she was five when Bruno left, so Isabela and Dolores are twenty-one now and would have been eleven then. So from the time she was old enough to even have a romantic interest in someone, she had to be reminded of that vision. And now, not only does she have to see the vision come to pass, with him being betrothed to another, but his betrothed is her own cousin. And now she has to watch him marry her cousin and all the while put on a happy face 'for the family' since the marriage is 'perfect'.
And another layer of sadness on Dolores's part; she's only a few months younger than Isabela, and so got her gift shortly after Isabela got hers. But since Alma probably made it clear from the beginning Isabela was the golden child, and Dolores's gift may be 'useful', it wouldn't be as 'perfect' as Isabela's. So, who's to say that Dolores didn't spend her childhood and early adulthood in the shadow of her perfect, slightly older cousin? And to add further salt to the wound, Isabela marrying Mariano means that any chance Dolores MIGHT have had with him is now gone forever. And even though it's supposed to be a day celebrated by the whole family, in the moment, Dolores can't even try to hide how much it hurts. Just like Isabela, and everyone else in the family, her wants are secondary at best and ignored at worst in favor of what's for the good of the family.
I feel bad for Mariano, since he is sincere and romantic but Isabela just isn't ready for a relationship when she can't even fully love herself. I do regret how Mariano is simply passed around as part of Isabela and Dolores' arcs, though.

The wedding dress is breathtaking, but also the song is full of emotion that shows the person in the most of no choice, anger, fear and broken. But it’s true that they would do it for something they don’t want to let down it down until they would break the point of wanting freedom.

Absolutely LOVE the subversion on the meaning of "what else can i do"!! In the original it was all about Isabella pushing herself wondering how far she could go and what she could do with her powers. While here.. it's the pain of hopelessly not being able to see any path other than the one she is set on. And the beautiful vocals make it complete

There’s so many characters from Encanto that deserved their own song one character I think should get his own song is Antonio. I feel like as the youngest and next to get a gift, he’s probably scared of not getting a gift like Mirabel and there’s a dark theory that alma made pepa have another baby to keep the family line going another reason why pepa is so stressed about Antonio’s gift ceremony, Pepa doesn’t want to disappoint her mother. Since kids notice things i feel like Antonio probably knew how important it was to his grandmother that he got a gift and that pressure of wanting to please his grandmother and make his mother happy could override the guilt he could be feeling for his love towards mirabel who he is very close to but ultimately doesn’t want to end up like, cast aside from the family and town he loves mirabel so much but doesn’t want to disappoint his family and is scared he’ll have to turn his back on the one family member he’s closest to because she doesn’t have a gift
Also imagine pressure to find a way to make the gift serviceable. Remember that Isabella was said to have the gift of grace because she could make pretty things and was naturally beautiful. Her gift wasn't GRACE, it was NATURE which was so much more powerful. Truly a curse of toxic positivity.
Mirabel has a gift like she can.see through the cracks in her family and also she's in tune with what others are feeling

It's animated so amazing. The way Isa struggles to hide her pain and how miserable she is, the simple joy on her face when she got to create a cactus. I really liked the visual of her struggling to hide the 'ugly' plants from childhood, stomping on a vine like that.
being forced into any situation you’re not comfortable with while everyone just watches without paying attention to your own well being is devastating this was a grate animation the fact that we got such a sad story without any dialogue says so much

A beautiful, yet heartbreaking song. Even though shes seen as "perfect" she holds many feelings inside Also at 1:25 ,you can see that Camilo is trying to comfort Dolores, Dolores cant even face Isabelle because she is so sad
This is so perfectly worded to change the meanings. I feel this also suggests that the encanto crumbles because nothing changed. Bruno is either ousted, or dies in the destruction, or in this AU he actually left so long ago. I'm seeing Isabella's inevitable breakdown resulting in an explosion of poison ivy and thorny vines that take over the village just before the candle goes out and all magic is lost. The village would be forced to either dig out their homes without magic, or have to abandon the village to start over elsewhere.
Amazing job.
I think this is actually what would eventually happen if Isabela continued as she did. And it's not fair to either party: Not to Isa, who has to live a lie, and not to Mariano, a man who does seem to deeply care and doesn't deserve to be stuck in a loveless marriage.
And also not to Dolores.
Besides Isabella being stuck in a one sided love, it's also tragic for poor Dolores.
Not only is she blocked from her love, she has to go on knowing that the man she loves is living a lie because Isabella will never go against her grandmother.
It's a tragedy for all three of them, really. Isabela is trapped not only in a loveless marriage, but also being forced to bury who she truly is since it doesn't fit the 'perfect' image that's been created of her. Dolores because she has to watch the man she loves marry another and she can never tell him how she feels about him. And finally Mariano, because while he may care for Isabela, they don't even know each other, let alone love each other. Even if he treats her kindly, he is married to a woman who cannot love him the way married couples should love each other. He would also be unaware that the woman who could and WOULD love him that way is just beyond his reach.
I mean Dolores could have spoken up?

I'm sure Dolores knew or suspected it was a one sided love, but she wanted what was best for her family and probably believed staying silent was the best way.

I remember finding Isa to be the most relatable of all the Madrigals, despite being a youngest child. I honestly connected with her better than I did for most fictional characters lol

Heart-breaking... It's so easy to relate to Isa here, I know what it's like to be trapped by toxic perfection.
The outfits look great, the singing beautiful and the expressions spot on. Mirabel and Dolores especially, you can see the concern and disappointment clearly while everyone else is oblivious to what's really going on. 😣
The detail of Dolores being said and Camilo being concerned in 1:25 is actually sooo cool

I can see how Mariano genuinely cares but doesn't understand what's exactly happening. And the ending shows how it's not even him she's scared of, but her family.
I love the contrast this has from the original.
The original is hopeful and cheerful when she says “What else can I do?”, curious to find out her full potential. Mirabel is also there for her and says “There’s nothing you can’t do”.

In the original, Isabela was discovering herself, with Mirabel by her side, pushing her limits to find her true self, here she’s being forced to be like Abuela, and hide her true self, hence the line “I’ve gotta be like you”, despite wanting to feel “the shiver of something new”.

@@DestinyRogers-mt6vq that is true, but the problem is that their situations are polar opposites: Shifu's love for Tai Lung blinded him to how his ambition and desires were growing too strong, while Abuela's Idea of what is best stiflied Isabela's ambitions and desires to the point she was going to a man she didn't want and bear his children to make her happy.
And also, when Isabela's "snapped', she covered the city in colorful plants and cacti, when Tai Lung snapped, he almost massacred a city.

Isabella becoming an unintentional villain due to her emotions much like Elsa, engulfing the town in thorny vines, poison plants and cannibal flowers would be a cool adventure story.
This...This _fits._ This fits her so well, and I can easily see this happening if they had chosen to show what would happen if the Madrigals had continued down the path Mirabel steered them away from. She would have continued to push her feelings down, bottling them up for everyone's sake but HERS. She would continue to hide herself and her heart, never letting those feelings out... _until her gift would do it FOR HER._

There's something so heartbreaking from all perspectives here...
The most obvious is Isabela who feels trapped in her perfection and can't escape it,and it gets to the point she breaks down suddenly (and I love the detail of her gift going haywire because of it)
Dolores is losing the man she loves unable to say anything for the sake of keeping the peace,her brother Camilo apparently the only one not oblivious to her pain
And even from Mariano's point of view it's just depressing. The man is genuinely in love,he's actually a really decent guy with lots of affection to give,and the wife he loves so much and cares about doesn't love him back and he just doesn't know it

I think the reason why Mirabel hugging Isa was part of Bruno's vision is because Isabela "breaking free" was essential to breaking the cycle of dysfunction in their family. If she had continued being Seniorita Perfecta, she would have married Mariano, lived her entire life in an unhappy marriage, and inadvertently messed up their five kids as a result of that.

Honestly I’m glad they didn’t paint Mariano as some bad person. He’s a good husband, and person in general, but just not who Isabela wants in her life (not romantically.) He can be a good sense of comfort for her and someone she cares for but not someone she loves. It’s not her or Mariano’s fault, she’s had a lot of expectations put on her from an early age since she’s so similar to her grandma. Especially look wise. Her grandmother holds too high of standards for her, that’s for certain, but part of you may be able to sympathize her. Her trauma is no excuse, just a reason

I genuinely believe that Mariano would accept her imperfections. He just wants someone to love, match his vibe. Which, the himbo energy is strong in this one. He would 100% support her and do his best to help Isa manage her anxieties. (But of course, this does not mean Isabella needs to stay (married) with Mariano even if he’s supportive.)

This is genuinely a heartbreaking and realistic look at what would happen to her if she ended up marrying Mariano. Bravo! The way you turned the title around and made it about hopelessness and desperation was so clever, seriously underrated.
The original song already made me burst into tears at how much I relate to Isabela, being the oldest of a family of nine children. But this... God, I didn't think the feeling could be amplified. I cried in happiness seeing Isabela free herself of expectation and this just completely rewrote that. Beautifully done, so tragic as well. Made me sob just as much, if not more.
this demonstrates the importance of Mirabel not having her own powers. Family members all want "perfection", the common thing completely overwhelms the ego, so they are always afraid if they no longer have strength. Mirabel also wants to be perfect, she searches for her gift and she realizes the dark side, the "responsibilities" of receiving the gift. And she changes it, saving the family from a darker future. Although I feel sorry for Mirabel because she was not given gifts and was overlooked by her family and everyone, everything has its cause.

I really liked this cover! It's so beautiful, yet so sad, and I love the way it's animated. Mirabel looks so cute in this, and I like how it resembles the concept art, and how rosy and colorful it all is. Luisa looks adorable as well(they all do). And I liked how you added the extra detail of Dolores looking sad, while Camilo looks her way in a worried manner. And I like how Mirabel pushes aside her animosity towards her big sister to tell her to comfort her, but when she told her to let it out, I was just like "umm, it's a little bit too late for that, my dear." I was kind of expecting Isabela to run away from the altar, but I guess not...so sad. Still amazing, though.
This is absolutely gorgeous and your voice is beautiful, like I’m hearing Isabela herself. Her singing has always been my favorite in Encanto besides Dolores, Mirabel, Luisa, and Camilo’s voices.
I feel so bad about her being forced to marry a man she doesn’t even love. I’m glad that Mariano and Dolores got together instead in the main timeline.
I just absolutely LOVE how you flipped the positive atmosphere and pumped-up tune of the original “What else I can do“ song to a melancholy atmosphere and bittersweet/desperate tune.
This literally hurt to watch. I didn't really like Isa because of the way she treated Mirabel as own personal punching bag, but that doesn't make this fate any less of a horror. Truly heartbreaking piece.

Just a quick thing, I really love how their kiss was interrupted with Isa's memory and the vines.
It's like when your mind goes blank/you dissociate during the situation, wanting to have nothing to do with it. And the vines also representing how she, specially in this moment, was completely trapped by both her gift and her familial duty. Great job!

The way almost every character in the family could’ve been one bad day away from snapping…I could definitely see Isabela being one of the first of the grandchildren to snap since she’s held up her persona for so long.
i always read Isabela's story as comphet/compallo and the new lyrics + visuals are absolutely gut wrenching. the image of young isabela looking scared of her thorns and stamping them out was like a stab to the heart

I believed if it got to this point Mirabel would interject. When she didn’t my heart shattered. Isa is like a cactus, she’s holding so much inside but her outside exterior is strong and defensive. She is truly trying her best and hiding her potential.. I loved this movie and Isa was my favourite, I think I was drawn to the breakdown and the feeling of trying to be perfection. As someone who’s struggled with depression for years and spent years trying to be a perfect child to save my family, I relate most to her of the siblings
