    My father bought in 1955 an LP of Gould's first recording of the Goldbergs, and played it often -- quite often -- as I, a quite young lad in the 1950s, was going to sleep in the evenings. In 1990 my father gave me a CD player system, but no CDs. Shortly, I went off to buy a few CDs, and came home with, I promptly realized, the recordings of Gould's earlier renditions of J.S. Bach's works, including the Goldbergs. Among the fine gifts my father provided me was this happy enchantment with Bach, and with Gould's interpretations of Bach. The second recording is my favourite, but the first is electric. I was living in Toronto when Gould's death was announced and I and many others there knew a genuine loss. One of the best things that can happen to a young person is to become enamored of Bach''s music. There are other fine composers, but J.S. Bach is at the summit.

When I listen to Gould playing Bach I realize that every single note has been thought, studied, measured to perfection. Hours and hours, days, years of study that donate us part of this magnificent player's life, and open us to really neverending horizons.

    Music owes so much to Bach. It’s hard for me to express my feelings either when reading his sheet music or listening to his recordings. His music continues to be a true miracle. Now on top of all this, listening to the brilliant Glenn Gould playing Bach brings me above my emotional threshold. What an amazing set of technical skills and musical interpretation. I bought years ago the gramophone record, “The Fabulous Recording of 1955” of Goldberg Variationen. I keep it in my office; just looking at it is enough!.

    Listened to these Goldberg Variations recording by Glenn Gould first time in 1986, on a party in our music school. Wild party going on downstairs, a few of us sitting in an insulated audio room with excellent speakers. It was an awakening. What a mastership and musicality. Every micro-second fits. Every note a hit, every line a surprise. Supernatural. Ethernal like the true laws of physics.

    A recording I would take to a desert island. With Friday, of course. Honestly, there is nothing better than this Glenn Gould rendition when it comes to the Goldberg Variations. Gould managed to recreate a new Bach, somehow. But needless to say, it's a capital reference I love. When a pianist reaches the perfection level Gould shows, we have to thank him for being idiosyncratic or even quirky. For perfection may become boring, think. Anycase, this is the genius at work and he shines as only him could. The brilliant, unique piano legend, Glenn Gould. Thanks for a life devoted to the best music men know. 🎶👍❤️🤗🙏

    For me he is one of the very few, if not the only, capable of making "wonderful" listening Bach performed on the piano. His Goldberg Variations are "poetry". Brilliant !! Bright!!

    The composition and this absolutly ingenious interpretation should actually be called Gouldberg-Variations!

    Although not necessarily this specific rendition - for me, Gould playing the "Goldbergs" as he called them, is the summit of all musical experience in human history. This combination of the other-worldly music from Bach, the mind-boggling understanding and meaningful interpretation of Glenn Gould, embodied by his inimitable technique and accuracy --- well, that's the music I want to hear in my last moments. Forever and ever they will live - Bach and Gould.

      You've expressed beautifully what pierces past words for a lot of us. That little chair his father made - the one he couldn't or wouldn't play without: His need for warmth that would parch a singer's throat - l don't want to say nothing else mattered but Bach, but it seems, truly, that Bach's spirit surrounded Gould in the playing. I love Leonard Bernstein's intro to him on the recording.
      Anyway, because of an accidental event or so, I know that heaven contains any desire.,.As in our afterlives: You'll hear all you want when you get there.
      Thank you.

    It's hard for me to listen to anyone else play this. Gould's second recording of the Goldberg Variations transcends technique and takes one straight into the mind of Bach. His early recording is of course wondrous and exuberant, but this is the one I always come back to. And yes, I love the humming.

      I thought the same, until I heard Lang Lang's 2020 recording of the repertoire. Try it. If you don't like it you'd appreciate Gould's version more, but if you like the new Lang Lang's version then it would open up a new world of expressions for you.

      @@ghoshneh L'ho sentita, però quella di Glenn Gould mi emoziona ancor di più...per me rimane la migliore in assoluto questa ultima versione di lui anziano, meglio della sua versione da giovane dove senti tanta velocità e virtuosismo ma minor intimità, a mio parere che sono ignorante in materia.

    • @ghoshneh
      @ghoshneh 3 년 전

      @@pinomorello753 So it was Italian ;-) , I was just joking! To reply, Glen Gould's version is also very close to my heart, in Lang Lang's version there are variations that I don't like Lang Lang's interpretation specially some of the fast variations, but his interpretation of the slow ones, like Aria and Variation no. 30, are very good alternatives to those of Gould's. . After all, Lang Lang's new Album is a new version and it would take time for it to sink in and understood.

      @ttrons2 2 년 전

      @@ghoshneh I don't agree. L.L throws ornaments all over the place. If anything I think Gould's use of the ornament is always perfect. LL display of how he or you are suppose to feel is in bad taste. His repeats are loaded with nothing new but ornaments. Watch some of the truly greats like Horowitz or Richter. He has technique but gets in the way of the music. LL is too much of a show off but the crowds seemed to like that.

    • @ghoshneh
      @ghoshneh 2 년 전

      @@ttrons2 It is true that Lang comes up with new ornaments which were not intended by Bach. So, Authentically, you are right and it is obvious how much Lang has added to the original score, especially in the repeats. However, you'd have to remember that Bach's music is still not accessible to a wider audience. Adding further ornaments MIGHT make the variations (repeats) more interesting making the score more accessible to others. Another analogy: if I'm not a good friend to you then I would make you appreciate your good friends even more, so , by being bad I'd make you appreciate all the good things you have in life further; Lang's work, good or bad, would benefit both parties involved!
