This scene is what makes the movie work. Any other Hollywood screenwriter would have had Damon coming to some epiphany with Williams or love for Minnie Driver. It’s his white trash best friend everyone else in the film dismisses that saves him and reaches him. The group of four friends, between this scene and giving him the car, it takes all the motions conceived and preconceived about the people around him and blows them up. The best people in his life were his friends not the professors.

Nah, they could still be friends, that's not what he meant. Will just didn't do anything with his gift, other than being an ass to people he didn't like (them apples scene) and to get out of stuff (when he used 200 year old legal documents to get out of jail etc and instead went into counsuling).
He could have hung out with his friends, but still worked at MIT done research as a scientist, instead he just worked as a janitor. He looked down on people who he viewed as seeing themselves as "intelligent", because Will was so much more intelligent (he just had an photographic memory), but Robin Williams character, Maguire, who was a pshycologist, was able to see through the fact that Will was just a lost kid. Maguire pointed out that Will probably knows the full history of everything in the Louvre etc, but he's actually never been there. He doesn't actually know how it "feels" to be there. Once this facade was broken, Maguire was able to make Will grow up and start taking personal responsibility.

The proof is that he couldn't even bring himself to go and do that until he could convince himself that he was going after a girl he already met, who happened to move away to the place that he could become better while also being around someone he already knew.

Alexander Inget You are right, the only thing is he has more than just photographic memory, when Will starts working with the MIT Professor (forgot his characters name), he basically used will to solve math theorims that had yet to be solved, and my man was offered a job by the NSA to basically decipher/crack/write code that A, nobody could, and B, nobody knew of or understood what it was. And just observing his character, hypothetically speaking, if Wills character was real, hed be the smartest man alive today and possibly/probably ever

Probably the greatest comedian of all time at not only making us laugh but bringing us out of our funks and feel warm inside, yet his dramatic performances as an actor were actually better than anything he ever did in his comedies. I miss him so much. Never again will there be another Robin Williams. He was one of a kind.

This movie was made in the 90s. Even when it pays, being a construction laborer is a very physically demanding job, especially for the grunt laborers like Affleck's character. His body will probably give out before he can get near retirement. The job is far from recession-proof. Heck even without a recession you can get slowdowns in the demand for construction work if there's not much local grown.

When you're obviously talented you can end up under a LOT of pressure to succeed, from everyone you know, often different people pushing you in different directions when you don't even know what you want to do with your life. A lot of people break down under that pressure, or they get by with some unhealthy coping mechanisms like substance abuse.
Parents can be the worst about it. You're smart so you've got to be a doctor or lawyer or whatever they decide you should be. But Will's got it even worse: rather than parents pushing him to something he doesn't want, he basically didn't have parents to steer and guide him toward anything.

What I like to think is that he said some of that stuff from emotion, in the heat of the moment.
When he knocked on that door and figured out that will actually did it, he didn’t realize he would be that happy about it. He surprised himself.

I think what blows me away personally was how young they were when they wrote it. Damon was 25 and Affleck was 23. I’ll be 24 in May which really hammers home just how talented they were/are.

His real wisdom was in his presentation. Will was a character who was horrifically beaten down by life. He doesn't value himself, so why would he act in his own best interest? He values his friendships more than his own life and Chuckie plays on that in this scene. Will would do anything for his friends, so Chuckie challenges him to be the best version of himself for the sake of the people he cares about.

Chuckie sees Will's potential and is willing to lose his friendship in a direct sense (of them continuing to grow up near each other, into old age) in order for Will to go out and seek his opportunities that he knows are waiting for him. Chuckie is acting selflessly, as the loss of Will's presence will be a big void in his life, but he'd rather his friend go far away and make something more of himself than live a less than agreeable one by holding himself back and staying in town. True friends want the best for each other, whatever the cost, and that's what Chuckie represents.

I joined the Army National Guard so I didn't have crippling debt when I got out of college at 25 (I started college at 17 lol), but I partied my ass off in college and got sub par grades. I'm 48. If I could go back 25 years I'd do 3 things. Work out several times a week and eat healthy. I'm skinny fat. And I always wish I'd been muscular. Second is apply myself, such as going to college or learning a valuable trade. Everyone told me to get into computers. Back in the Early to mid 90's. Imagine if I'd been a programmer for 20 years? Third. I'd build a strong friendship with 3-5 guys. Guys you know would have your back. Even to tell you when you're wrong.
Don't wait. Because tomorrow you will wake up and be 50. Your body will fail you. You'll work lousy jobs for little pay and have no prospects. But most of all you'll miss out on so many adventures, stories, great conversations and just living life instead of trodding through it day after day.

SirDistic Honestly, this might sound silly but my dream was always to be an actor but I just don’t know how to get to where I would need to be. I have no connections & possibly no talent in it. I’m an introverted guy as well so I don’t know how realistic of an option it is for me. Anytime I look for jobs online in general though none of them ever seem interesting to me. I’ve just been going from job to job with dreading each one of them. In terms of working out I do work out & try to eat healthy. I let myself go a bit during quarantine but I’ve been losing some weight & plan on going back to the gym soon.

that's kinda not true, a true friend will never stab, what they'll do is to look behind your back and warn you to be wary, and what he'll do also is show their backs(an analogy of vulnerability) to you to show that they also have faith in you to be able to trust you

I just recently watched an interview with Matt on Hot Ones, he talked about this scene and apparently they got it on the first take. he said something along the lines of him and Ben spending 4 years developing the scene and it was over in 20 minutes. Pretty crazy.
