Leon is definitely one of the greatest champions we’ve gotten. He actually has a role in the story and even is involved in the major conflict fight of the game with Eternatus until he’s defeated. Even his various teams are honestly really good. The only champion that might be better is Cynthia because her team is incredible. Leon is definitely a close second

Be honest: did anyone expect Leon's team to be 60+? I didn't and I did not want to overlevel. But that sure did me a fright
I spent most of the game overleveled so after Eternatus I just went for the battle and found myself facing him with level 56-58 mons, his Haxorus was OHKOing most of my team.
Before him, I think the last time I got rekt by a Champion was either Steven or Cynthia.

Nope. I spoiled myself that Eternatus was Lvl 60 so I overleved my team for it and waited to sweep Leon as I did in USUM when after beating Ultra Necrozma, everything else is 10-20 levels behind. To my surprise, Leon's Pokémon and mine were in the same average so the battle was intense and just made it stupidly hard by not using Dynamax.

For an "undefeated" champion Leon doesn't know how to use aegislash and sends out a dragon type against a fairy type.
He's a type of guy who trid to catch Eternatus on 1st turn with a Pokeball and feel completely defeated when it broke free... This makes me think that he has never caught a Pokemon before and that all of his Pokemon were passed down from his parents

The fight against him was pretty easy but idc what anyone says, this line of dialogue made me love Leon!
Butcher For me, it was easy until his Charizard nearly wiped my whole team. Note I barely did any raids, so I played the game normally. The rest of his team is child’s play.

I just battled Leon. I have never felt such excitement and thrill in a battle before. I even held back when my Dragapult went against Inteleon and it bit me in the ass when Charizard started wiping the floor with Corviknight and Duraludon afterwards. My favorite Champion theme, my favorite battle, and possibly even my favorite Champion.

I ruined the fun by doing a bunch of raid battles and getting exp candies.
Then I showed up with my lvl 100 Cinderace and Pyro Ball almost every single Pokemon of his
Dragapulp wiped out my Coalossal and my Rillaboom, Haxorus wiped out my Corvikinght, and Charizard my Haterenne and Tyranitar. It was Lapras vs Charizard at the ebd

It was in this fight that I realized Leon calling Hop his "biggest fan" wasn't figurative. Hop literally imitates a lot of his moves and even the way to throw the Dynamax Ball. This kid is a hardcore fan.
It will be a shame that I have to crush his idol for the personal reason that I will not allow Charizard to be the Champions' main Pokémon in Galar favoring the Kanto Pandering.
well... Galar has more gen 5 pandering imo, it's by far the most plentiful Pokemon from past regions in this games dex, and has multiple galarian forms too
@@roberto...4885 Only one or two Unova Pokémon have galarian forms and none of them got an evolution. Compared to Farfetch´d evolving to Sirfetch´d and Mr. Mime evolving into Mr. Rime. It gives a lot of Unova but not enough. Most Gigantamax are Kantonian an Galarian Pokémon. KKanto Pandering still exists and Leon must pay the price for having a Charizard as main.

Kukui has a line about Solgaleo/Lunala if you have it in your party just outside the League. And of course, the secret additional part of the cutscene with Tapu Koko.

This was just a full on fun Champion battle. It is debatable in the fandom whether this was a hard battle or not, but honestly I’ve never had so much fun facing a Champion since Cynthia. He’s a cool dude who loves what he does, and expresses sheer joy training Pokémon. I can’t do anything but love and respect Leon.

You know, his speech right before the final battle really sounds final boss worthy. So glad he is not actually the Big Bad like so many of us thought he would be, but that would be a speech worthy of one in any other game series.

-Alder and Iris, being Alder and Iris both enjoyed their battles as well.

I really liked these gym battles with the crowd. It got me hyped.
I just love Leon. He became my favorite champion the moment I saw him cause of how much personality he gave off. Also, while he may be the Champion of the Galar Pokemon League, the game and other supplementary material makes it clear that he's basically sick of the position after holding onto it for so long and genuinely wants someone to beat him and take his place. Part of his cool guy routine is just him faking it cause he needs to be a "hero" to the masses as their Champion, and it's noted that after losing the title that he's actually a lot more energetic now that he's not really bound by the responsibility of being one anymore.
On that note, when he does finally lose as shown above, I like how Leon is shown to be frustrated over the fact which shows he initially can't quite accept the idea of losing despite wanting it which gives him an added level of complexity. It makes sense that after winning for so long that the idea of losing starts to feel alien. I also really like how he's a central figure in Hop's character arc (wherein Hop learns to grow out of his shadow and be his own man) and is generally quite active in protecting Galar from any threats that come along.

I love how in the beginning, not everybody is cheering for you, some of them are cheering for Leon.
I also like how they notice you caught a legendary rather than not noticing you have a literal god in your party.
I love that the music is a remix of the Hall Of Fame, I feel like it fits the whole “if anyone can beat him, it’s you” thing
I love his frustration at the end of the battle and its sudden change to happiness.

The overarching theme of Sword and Shield seems to be passing on the torch to the new generation, and that comes full circle in this final battle. We see how Leon first became a champion when he was only 10 and had a Charmander as his starter. Raihan was his old rival, Sonia's predecessor was the professor he grew up with, and now, here he is, using Pokemon in ways that would make the folks at Smogon crack a smile.
And here you come to topple him and take up the mantle of the new champion of the Galar region, thus completing the circle.
Ahhh, I remember sturuggling on this fight so much on my first playthrough of Shield, mostly because his Dragapult and Charizard were so annoying to have to deal with. When I finally beat him it was the best feeling ever

I love how Leon's reaction to being beaten is at first anger, that HE the UNBEATABLE champion just lost, but then he throws that aside and celebrates the fact that he just got beaten, and gets the honor of passing on the title of champion.
Some of the audience cheers for Leon. Others cheer for Pokeli. In the end, Pokeli wins the match. So, this is what Leon's team will have. I'll have to remember that when I get this game. I also love how during the battles, the opponents actually talk to you. Reminds me of how Diamond and Pearl, Heartgold and Soulsilver, Black and White, and Black 2 and White 2 use to have opponents talk during battle, but this game is those games combined into one.
This would totally be improved if they had voice acting. Pokémon is one of those series that I think has reached the point where voice acting would be a great fit for it

I just did this battle last night but I had to see it again, it's so damn good. I have never experienced as much emotion in a Pokemon game as I did during this battle.
This is the kind of league I wanted, never really enjoy the idea of a elite four as much as an pokemon league.

This fight was honestly perfect. The crowd, the anticipation, the battle itself. Leon isn't too challenging, but not too easy. My level 75 Heatmor got wiped out instantly and it felt amazing. Then, it ended with him and that Charizard, 15 health on the last hit.

I made my Dragapult hold back by using Bite on Inteleon so it would kill her since she was starting to sweep. Charizard made me regret that decision so badly. Took out two of my team members like nothing until it was him against my Cinderace.
The battle ended with my level 54 Dynamax Drednaw on 15 hp as my last Pokemon narrowly knocking Gigantamax Charizard
That Dragapult nearly swept my entire team, so it was a welcome surprise. My mon weren't weak to him, they just got outsped easily.

Did anyone else have trouble with Leon or was it just me? I wasn’t expecting him to actually be strategic.
I wasn't using healing items nor was I switching. And though I had my Dragapult use weak moves like Bite on purpose to his Inteleon would kill it, his Charizard instantly made me regret it by sweeping my Corviknight and Duraludon like they were dust.

I had a bit of trouble with Leon, due to my team being a bit under level, but I manage to beat him.
Yes! For some reason my dumb brain actually thought Haxorus was Dragon-steel so I sent out Cinderace instead. Then he started to sweep me. I didn't lose, but it was pretty close, for sure.

EWOODJ I just used Obstagoon and used obsruct to lower its defence and one shot it with night slash, rest of the battle was really difficult though, and winning was really satisfying
he was actually smart Golisopod would have been a KO because of the defense drop there was a speed tie
It depends becuase I've seen fights where aegislash alternates between king shield and an attack and battles where aegislash just attacks and essentially commits suicide
But yeah they kinda need to fix the AI on that one it's inconsistent

Playing through Shield again recently really made me appreciate Leon so much more. Unlike other games, he takes on the bad guys so YOU can continue to focus on collecting the gym badges to face him. He genuinely wanted you to be strong enough to give him a run for his money. Once you beat him, you can clearly see his frustration and his pride take a massive blow, especially for losing for the first time ever?, but immediately after accepts his loss and remains professional as he crowns the next Galar champion. Leon is one of the best champions we've ever gotten in my eyes, even if his battle for some was a little easy.

It only looks like that against if you use a regular pokemon against a gigantamax pokemon, if it's two regular pokemon then the animation for it is more in line with what you would expect.
