@@apapz3245 Well, they might have "known" since spring training but after the All Star break, they fell apart (like they have SO many times in the past) and quickly fell in the standings. If that team attitude had carried INTO the playoffs, they would have lost to the Yankees and called it a season.

You would think with all the championship experience on the BoSox, they’d know better. The team was picked to finished last and here we are, 4 games away from a chance at a title.

@@allaccordingtoplan5560 The Yankees literally chose the Red Sox as their (potential) opponent. It's how the wild card rules work since there was a possible 4-way tie. Near the end of the season, the 4 teams (Sox, Jays, Yanks and Mariners, in that order) had to make a choice (home field or pick opponent). Sox and Jays chose home field with the first two choices. With the third pick, Yanks chose to play the Sox instead of the Jays in what would have been game 163 with the winners going to the actual wild card game. This didn't end up being needed of course, but Bryan is right that the Yanks said they wanted to play the Sox.

I think they are saying his hand popped off the base while the tag was being applied. He looked safe at the moment he got to the bag, but it looks like he did come off the base during his slide.

Watching the back heel of his palm right before where the palm turns into your wrist, you can clearly see that his palm (not the rest of his palm and hand) never came off the bag. Besides, even without all of that, the call must be made without a shadow of a doubt, and there was plenty to doubt that says that his hand really and clearly came off the bag. Considering all that, he was clearly safe. Even the way he held his position on the bag without moving while looking up at the umpire clearly shows that he was safe, because he had that look that said, “I’m safe, Ump... I’m gonna stay right here in this position so that you can clearly see that the heel of my hand never left the bag... the palm and fingers of my hand may have been a little off and above the bag, but the back heel of my hand stay on the bag all the way as it slid from one side of the bag to the other side of the bag... I’m clearly and easily safe!” Bad call! Look at the video again slowly and carefully. The back heel of his hand never leaves the bag. The man was safe!

@@ADFONT You're wrong about the standard of proof for replays. In fact, you have it exactly backwards. Because the third base ump initially called him out, they have to have clear and convincing evidence that he was safe to overturn the call. If there is doubt, the call on the field stands, which is what happened.
As for the player's reaction, players try to buy calls all the time in sports. I mean, seriously, that's supposed to be evidence? Nah.
And it is definitely not clear to me that the heel of his hand stays on the bag. There's clearly a shadow on the bag from his hand, but it's hard to tell whether the heel is on the bag or off the bag at that point. The umpire, who had a different angle, obviously thought he didn't stay in contact with the bag - or totally blew the timing of the tag.
The good news is, the Sox won the game and series anyway!

@@Seanykins1212 Again, this is how I know you don't watch Rays baseball. 1) Kiermaier ALWAYS spins his glove on his finger. That is nothing new. He does it when he's bored in the outfield during the regular season as well. Nothing to do with cockiness. 2) I think they were eating popcorn because they were hungry and trying to calm themselves in a high anxiety situation. This season compared to prior seasons they have been a lot more low energy. They don't get excited easily. So the popcorn was more so a calming technique in a high stress game rather than a display of boastfulness. Although the media was joking about it, they made it a bigger deal than it really was. It's a big reach to see popcorn as a sign of cockiness. 3) They rarely do pushups in the dugout, but the few times they have done it, they've done it because they didn't hit a ball out of the park that could have gone out if they were stronger. So the long running joke in baseball is that if a guy misses a homer, he needs to hit the weight room and lift more weights. You overthought everything. I actually watch Rays baseball, not just paying attention to them in the postseason. 🙄They are a very humble team. You guys want a cocky narrative to be true about them so badly that is just not true.

Disagree with you on second half Bullpen went south.Hittjng was bipolar and starting pitchers were inconsistent.Non of that anything to do with covid.I said back in the end of August they would back into the playoffs which they did.Then its a sprint, and if they reached deep they could beat the yankees and Rays.Even thoe both Rays and Yankees are better.Cora is a better manager in games that count, and he knows how to push the right buttons when needed .
