Japan is definitely one of the top favourites to win this event they’re so good all around. Korea on the other hand is definitely the biggest letdown of the tournament so far, losing to Australia who they had no business losing to and getting crushed by their biggest rival. They have a lot of work to do and need China/Czechia to upset Australia for them to go through.

@Pete Cardona yea I guess i know what you mean. Pool B where Japan was were comprised of weaker nations where as pool D had so many good Latin teams squashed in one. Pool C where USA was also a easy ride for USA, and it probably were plotted in a way to monetize the baseball by WBC. Teams from pool B where Japan was full of weak team for sure. But that pool did make sense since they were all close to each other. America not being in the difficult pool with its neighbors was more plotted for them to advance to the tournament for sure.

    • Pete Cardona
      Pete Cardona 11 일 전

@Tairi x たいり i am not saying Asian teams are weaker. Please don’t take it out of context. I understand Japan won 2 championships -おえふぇと…before MLB Owners did not allow the best contractual$$ players to participate fearing damaging their investment. Also with this format is not difficult. Cuban, Japan, played China, Australia, Italy and now they are called “semifinalists”- not fair.
That being said, my point of this is that the system is flawed. Because Cuba in Japan now they are cool semi-finalist when they did not face the best teams like DR, Venezuela. More challenging teams down in Czech Republic or china don’t you think? 🤔

    • Tairi x たいり

Team Japan in this tournament is really strong.
It is said that pitching power is more important than batting power in short-term baseball, but the Japanese team's
All the pitchers that come out are 94 miles or more and starters, regardless of relievers
    Everyone's level is high.
In the United States this time, there are many withdrawals of the pitching staff, and the pitching power is basically weak
So if there is a team that can beat Japan, it will be Dominica.

    • CognizantCheddar
      CognizantCheddar 17 일 전 +4

Japan is usually strong at the WBC. They have the most titles.
Japan's NPB players are commonly extra motivated -- it's an opportunity to show their stuff to MLB scouts, playing directly against MLB players. Meanwhile the teams that are already filled with Major Leaguers approach the tournament as glorified spring training.

      @Nicholas Brown
Between 1994 and 2004 there was no decline in World Series viewership, but a sharp decline after. I say that 90s and early 2000s was the last peak of baseball because it was steroid era. I am not incorrect; baseball was already in its decline. The the strike, while it did impact the sport briefly, the numbers balanced back to pre-strike within 3 years. Steroid scandal was the nail in the coffin, because unlike the strike, there was no bounce back.
Baseball has never been as popular as it was in the 90s-early 2000’s as it was prior to the steroid scandal.
Baseball attendance rises with the population - the larger the market, the less of a percentage you need for growth.
The fact that the attendance had an upward trend from 1950-2004, and then sharply dropped, proves my point.

    • Nicholas Brown
      Nicholas Brown 20 일 전

@Nabongs yeah, with the risk of brain damage/CTE in later life, many parents are not allowing their children to play. MLB does need to do a better job at marketing to youth, basketball has done a good job in that respect and soccer is increasing in popularity as well

    • Nicholas Brown
      Nicholas Brown 20 일 전

@K C This is incorrect, the amount of fans has largely plateaued but attendance numbers are way better than they were in the 80s and baseball's popularity was at its low point after the strike in the mid 90s

    • Nabongs
      Nabongs 20 일 전 +3

@성이름 In Japan, it is considered a virtue not to make excuses when losing a game. Especially in the world of sports, it is sometimes more important to fight fair and square than to win, and we learn that blaming others for our losses is a shameful act. Is this not the case in other countries?

@CarboNerd I'm American and I think it is cool to see Shohei back in the Stripes that I first saw him in. I pay attention to these tournaments. I knew right away that he could star in MLB without too much trouble.
I hope Mr. O gets to win some games with this team. More than in Red. I'm not complaining too much, watching Mike Trout and him together is great. It's just a tough team to follow. They have some dumb injury luck going.
I already have Chicago Bears AND Cubs in my life... i like finding good teams to watch and root for.
Japan has been that team in every WBC. I've been a fan of Japanese ball. As long as they aren't playing the US. Japan always has awesome pitching. Their defense and offense are both high-level "smart baseball" stuff that gets me excited. Every player is disciplined. They make few mental mistakes

Darvish did not pitch in the U.S., and this was his first appearance as a game. His slider was sharp and he happened to hit a home run well; as a member of the 2009 WBC winning team, he has plenty of experience and will probably do well in his next outing.

As a baseball fan (Korean), I take my hat off to Darvish Yu whether he is on the mound or does an interview (basically whatever he does). What a baseball player and a great man. A very humble, hardworking player. Many young players from/in Asia should learn how he plays and treats baseball. He gives the same amount of respect for opposing players no matter he is batting first, fourth or ninth. That's not an easy thing to do especially when you are a great pitcher like him. That's what I like him the most about. I wish him the best for the rest of his career as well as his life.

NPB constantly exports solid starters. Yamamoto is coming in a few years, and 21-year-old Sasaki and 20-year-old Takahashi are also very promising. I think it a good option for asian pitchers to join the league if they can’t get a offer from MLB teams.

Thing is NPB has "Foreign Players Rules", only 4 foreign players are allowed on the 25-man game roster, there is no limit to the number an organization can sign, but that makes Asians hard to get in NPB. They prefer Americans or Hispanic players.

One of the things that Ohtani does so well is launch angle. He’s able to golf balls out of the park when most players would end up hitting the top of the ball and grounding out.
Ohtani has a similar swing approach as Trout. Trout and Ohtani twist their bodies instead of their wrists to hit the ball. Your body has to be strong enough to withstand that kind of torque. Ohtani was born to play baseball.

Now we are the underdogs and at a similar level of teams like Czech Republic, the Netherlands etc.

Japanese baseball has always been stronger than Korean baseball.
Even the head-to-head record shows that Japan is stronger.
However, the reason why it is considered a rivalry is that it has always been a close game of one or two runs, and occasionally Korea has won a few upsets in international tournaments that really mattered to Japan.
Korean players have mistaken these past glories for their own achievements and have let their guard down. Today's results show this.

The strength of the 15 pitchers of the Japanese national team is that they all throw pitches of 92 mph and over 150 km from the starter to the bullpen.
    There are no skillful pitchers
It's a gorgeous pitcher even without Senga

8:55 When a player from the Korean national team was once asked in an interview in January about Ohtani's countermeasures, he answered, "If we run out of places to throw, we throw to the body." Otani was therefore irritated by this pitch.

It was a bad joke, that was taken out of context😂 But after their pitchers drilling Noot in the back, trying to hit Ohtani, and then trying to hit Yoshida too it just looks bad. Even though there probably wasn’t any ill intentions. I think it was just poor control. You could see their pitchers facial expressions, they were STRESSED.

I am looking forward to seeing Roki Sasaki pitch tomorrow.
