I am a Marine and always will be. Listening to the Admiral took me back to Parris Island where the training tested me to the limit and they tried punishing me to test my mettle to see if I had it to be a combat trained Marine. I couldn't do things right at first and they made me do it over and over until I succeeded and got it. After 3 months of terrible mental and physical training I graduated as a Marine. It was the greatest and proudest day of my life and I am still a Marine at age 85.

My husband was a marine and a Navajo. He was proud of all his family that served. My family also represented the best they could be in the Army,Navy and Marines. My dad joined at 17. He felt ashamed that he was home and his brothers were serving overseas. My Grandfather had signed for him to go. I miss him so much. The National Anthem makes me cry every time I hear it. I am so proud of the strong men in my family, and my friends, who also served this country. I love you daddy.
This is why I can't stop respecting America even when the country has a lot of problems. This core strength of America will never go away, never be altered regardless of whatever the problem they have. Stay strong Americans.

I’m a heroin addict clean since July 12th 2017. My family is dead, my mom died from alcoholism, my father just died from Parkinson’s disease and my sister overdosed on fentanyl and died 2 months ago. My support is gone. I have 2 little kids and a no where job I feel cold and alone. I needed to hear this. I wanna go to school.
I wish you the best. Stay clean and you already won half the battle. Teach your children to stay away from drug, alcohol and tobacco. Good luck and you can do it.

I found this speech a few years ago when I was at my absolute lowest losing to drugs and alcohol. I'm 14 months sober as of writing this and this speech was part of my recovery. The ten rules went on my wall and I started to live by them. I fought for my life back harder than I've ever done anything. If anyone is ever struggling, please don't give up, you can overcome.
Awesome man, Keep The Fight Alive is the recovery society’s Motto that I was at, congrats on your 14 months I am on day 4 today, I’ve been in recovery for awhile but I struggled with a legal substance so I collected a year and took a year cake which was false so that brought a lot of shame in me and took me out, but you know it is possible to live a clean life, so keep up the good work man!!

Also a senior currently, it's been different this school year, very different for both parents of middle school and high school kids, down to elementary school. It's been tough, it's been rough but people still haven't given up.

I showed this to my dad who's ex military, he was stricken with 3 different types of cancer that developed into a terminal illness, he went from a mean 210 pound tank to less then 100 it absolutely kills me to see him like this, it hurts just to say this. i use this speech to empower myself, it was incredible watching my dad fight a little harder to sit up longer, to speak longer, to smile for that much longer ment everything to me and my family - you hit a different note in his heart - thank you

I've watched this several times As a 70 yr old man, I can truly attest the points he makes are indeed words of wisdom to be taken to the heart. It is sad but some will hear this and scoff, others will hear and think it doesn't apply to them. Yeaaaaa, no. This guy was an officer brat. I promise you any enlisted knows about 100x more than this guy when it comes to dealing with adversity and struggle. Half of this dude's speech was so contradictory and confused, which is sad considering he actually wrote it down on a card. You'd think he'd be able to do better. I'm a short guy (5'7"). Not the most physically imposing guy in the world by any means. Used to be really self-conscious about it into my early 20s and probably had a chip on my shoulder about it.
Joined the military (Air Force) in a special operations job, and yes we had the bell there. Passed through that somehow and as I was going through I realized the shortest guys had an easier (but not easy) time with the PT. Not sure of the reason, but shorter guys consistently outperformed the taller ones.
Later left the military and became a police officer. As one of the shortest guys in the dept., I found its not necessarily your size that commands respect from people, but how you carry yourself and your demeanor in stressful situations. Some may judge you up front as the little guy and write you off or test you a little more, but in my experience you can win their respect within five minutes by just being professional, calm, and respectful.
The scariest people I've ever met, in both my police and military work, were shorter guys. Some even shorter than me!
Moral is, don't get hung up on your height. It may affect first impressions a little with new people, but its your attitude and demeanor that wins hearts and minds, and after awhile - if you carry yourself right and treat others well - they wont see you as the little guy anymore. And you will stop thinking of yourself that way too.

It reminds me we are all humans and we all have our flaws, but don't let that undermine who you are as a human being. I lost my Vietnam Navy Seal, last year. I shed tears while watching this. Now I know why he was the wonderful man he was. I Wish so much I had seen this before his death, somewhere in our years together, I could have loved him a little better, harder, if that were possible. Through tears, watching this, I thank God this popped up in my feed, and gave me one more look into the life of a Navy Seal, my Navy Seal. Thank you Admiral McRaven.

There are countless like him that get up everyday and do their duty, first because it IS THEIR DUTY, and second because it is what they truly believe in, sadly the rioters & looters, those that would tear down any shred of history, have no respect for them. They at the very least scream horrible profanities at them, at the worst they throw chunks of broken concrete at them or swing clubs & bats at them, and even thru all of that the countless honorable & duty bound men & women do their utmost to remain calm & restrained in their responses. Not all are or were decorated SEALs, some might be a guardsman serving his country while getting a hand with college, a Fireman, a Paramedic, or the lowly Beat Cop, the one that when I was growing up parents used to teach their kids to respect, and to whom they told their kids to go if they were lost, hurt, or in trouble. What happened to that time? Are there bad apples in any of those groups, of course there are, because there are bad PEOPLE, and all those groups are made up of PEOPLE. Does that make the groups bad, when some miniscule number of them cross the line? On any given day, in my current profession, I interact with a half dozen to several dozen in some of those groups, and in terms from another life, "I would be proud go beyond the wire, or thru a door either in front of or behind any of them if the situation required it".

Every time I listen to this speech, different training and missions flash through my mind. It's amazing how times in our life that were too hard, too cold, miles, heat, no water or food, grades, girlfriends, illness, death, bills, job loss. Yet most of those moments are locked away in my mind only being brought back to life when triggered.
I must believe that my health will improve, that things will get better.
I can do this, just got to dig a little deeper.
We watched this in a drug rehab i was at. It was a really powerful thing for those of us that were trying to start over and become better, happier people.
Devin I have the tool to conquering addiction. It's your hate. HATE IT WITH ALL YOUR HEART AND SOUL. When you hate a certain food. There is absolutely nothing that will make you eat that food. Pick up your hate and use it for what its good for. Good luck 💋

"you aren't allowed to feel that good - who the hell do you think you are?" "you have to be miserable and boring like all of us." fuck that. go find the purest form of the drug you love, slam it and go out and do the impossible. millions do just that everyday. they feel good and aren't dicks looking to blame everyone and everything else as to why they can't be successful. now you got a rehab telling you you can't be successful until you quit getting high. Total BS. Tell you what, go do whatever, and i mean whatever it takes to be successful and the drugs will follow in kind and find their rightful place in you're life. you're trying to stop drugs in order to be successful. that's establishment brainwashing meant to keep you down. you have to first be successful and then go live your life and rehabs are filled with losers, not winners. the winners are the ones running the place and taking your money. they're fucking with you, man. can't you see that?
