He didn't understand the challenge, if he simply knicked the green knight's skin he would have won, and the only thing the green knight would have been able to do to Gawain in return is knick his skin in one year.

When the green knight put down his axe, he should also drop his weapon and fight in equals. Even if he was required to use force he should've just throw a fist as a blow and he would be alive next year as well. This is why we should never treat others the way we don't want to be treated.

Alot of the times these are international movies, so i can appreciate this. I dont like reading subtitles during a movie personally so atleast i can appreciate it still. Occasionally if it really captivates me, il track it down and watch it

Only americans hate reading subtitles lmao i’ve actually met so many people who don’t like subtitles because it “goes too fast” 😂 i’m american too but grew up learning japanese and watching anime 24/7 so i got good at reading subtitles i guess? I feel like it’s just not hard to read like 5-15 words within like 5 seconds

Gawain simply wasn't paying attention, or was too stupid to understand the rules.
The Green Knight didn't say to strike a killing blow. He simply said he would return the same strike given in a years' time.
Gawain could have simply slapped the Knight, but instead chose a killing blow.

@@sagnikmukhopadhyay1927 because the rule was whatever was inflicted on the green knight would have been done back to him. If he would have slapped him he’d get a slap back in a year, however he cut off the green knights head. Which in turn was his fate

In the original story, gawain had the scarf that prevented his decapitation, given by his love. His bravery was in accepting his fate, showing the green knight that rhe round table was indeed honorable and just.

One thing missing from the recap that has raised some questions here is why Gawain decapitated the Green Knight.
The challenge was “strike me and I shall return the same strike in a year”. Gawain thought, quite reasonably, that if he dealt a killing blow, the Green Knight wouldn’t be alive to return the strike. When the knight got up and walked out, Gawain realized he was screwed. His attempt to avoid being hurt by killing his foe was his downfall. If he had dealt a lesser blow then he would have been injured in return but not killed.

Its based on the arthurian legend of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight but they take some liberties, such as in the end where in the legend Sir Gawain doesn't die because of an enchanted sash and him and the green knight leave on good terms.

My goodness people come on. The whole point of the movie is to see if he is ready to be a knight. Thus the “game” is a syllogism foreshadowing the decisions that would be made. Albeit done in a dark twisted way.

Ever since I saw the teaser for this, I've been obsessed with the style of the movie, even though I can't articulate what it is.
There's a primordial quality here for sure‚ and I get some of the same flavour from other ancient material, (Epic poems, Biblical legends... but I caught some of the same vibe from Pan's Labyrinth.) On the surface, the minimalist story is almost childlike, (including talking animals) but at the same time is about something not so kid friendly (like the "decapitation game").
Kind of reminds me of folk children's fairytales of the Brothers Grimm. Another aspect is that the movie seems to elevate the emotional, raw "audio-visual" experience above everything else... Plot is there for the viewer to piece together or interpret as much as he/she wants (as if interpreting poetry) but watching the movie is more like a raw feeling experience , like Mel Gibsons Apocalypto. Seeing this film actually made me realise I was tired of movies and books being all about plot and other coherent ideas instead of just "being".

I got roped in by the visuals of the trailer and watched the movie all the way thru. It definitely doesn't make much sense unless you severely summarize it like this. Basically, it's artsy type people who don't know when to stop with the "symbolism" and whatnot and anything resembling a coherent story just ends up being an afterthought.
Don't get me wrong, symbolism is great - when done properly; this just was not it.

Second of all, this is the dumbest movie I've seen it in decades.
I was watching this movie with a friend and I 💩 you not as soon as he cut the knights head I left and never finish this movie. That was the dumbest thing, he could have just simply blew on him!!!! Literally just put his mouth next to his skin and blow air on him but instead he cuts his head off which is completely psychotic!!!! Some people may say it was because he did it cuz he thought if he killed him then wouldn't get hurt, but he didn't have to even bad. On top of all of this the story and plot is just straight-up stupid and goofy.
Ps: a way better movie would have been him immediately trying to escape the debt he had to repay and then the Green Knight chasing him throughout the world in order to get his revenge and at the same time everyone that the main protagonist meet ether also went back on their word and even some even betrayed him until he eventually learn what true honor is and what would happen if no one kept their word. Either by Saving another person's life or doing something selfish. Then he goes to the Green Knight and simply offers up his head like a dignified person for which right before the Green Knight actually killed him, he also Knights him and make him a knight for which he originally wanted to be at the beginning of the movie. He closes his eyes so the green before he cut off his head but when he opens his eyes again he is now the Green Knight. All this simply was, was a test to see who could take up the mantle of the Green Knight so that the old one can finally rest in peace, but this is literally a half brain story that I just came up just now and it's better than what was actually in this movie.
Truly a better story than whatever shit this movie was.

This was the most confusing and boring movie I ever watched and it's not because it had some super complicated story but rather the plot was so simple that I never thought it would be just that, I remember going through half the movie and was like wtf is going on and by the end my reaction was still the same, I will never understand how anyone could find this movie good and interesting.

yep. i saw the trailer and was pretty intrigued... then i watched it in cinema, and it was astonishingly bad. The story made no sense and was tough to follow... If you havent read the original story you couldnt really figure out what the purpose of the story was. And even if you know the story, the way they depicted it and the changes they made... this was an exhausting watch which left me more irritated than anything

This is a visually beautiful film, but I found it boring. I’m also not a huge fan of race swapping. Even today I think Boorman’s ‘Excalibur’ (1981) is still the best Arthurian legend film ever made.
