- In the last two days, New York state saw the number of hospital admissions and intubations due to COVID-19 increase at a slower rate, and deaths essentially held steady. What does this mean for New York’s place on the curve? It’s unknown whether the change in numbers will be followed by an increase in cases, a decrease or a plateau. I used to work in New York. Before I went there, many people told me how rude the people were and how I would get F-bombed more than I ever had been in my life. Well, the F-bombing was the only truth in that tale. I always found New Yorkers to be warm, thoughtful, considerate and friendly ... just maybe a little more direct than I was used to.
But what really defines New Yorkers for me is their heart, their compassion, their courage and their resilience. They're like no other group of people that I know. I ache for them everyday when I see these news accounts but it doesn't stop me from admiring their spirit and being inspired by their guts in the face of adversity. New York will triumph in the end and we can be thankful that we have New York's example to follow in understanding what it takes to fight this, as we will all be tested before this is done. New York Strong!!

I hope when this is all over there is a serious effort by the government to treat the likely psychological fallout for the medical staff. Losing one patient can have a devestation on you but I can't even imagine losing multiple patients a day that level of stress for that long will likely cause some serious PTSD

Utah county is AWFUL. No one is staying home and most people's posts that live here are saying "we aren't staying home until we have to, but we are still social distancing". How are we plateauing if half of the state hasn't done anything to stop it
Not to be negative but you're probably right. Here in Georgia its only just getting started. Stores are open, people out working and moving around. Its only a matter of time. As long as employers stay open we have to work unless we have a fever or start to get sick.

I am actually scarred for my life and i'm starting to have anxiety attacks.

Good news is @ 5:11 you see the cases are way up but death rates are up slightly. So based on this curve the mortality rate is going down. Once again, not to sound cold but its a case load issue. Most importantly keep the health care workers safe.
The health care workers should not have to risk their lives due to incompetence of the governments inability to be prepared.

I live in Canada and we take social distancing very seriously. Everybody here as to wear a hand made mask if possible, desinfectant are mandatory before you enter a store. Only one member of the family CAN go in the store. We have to stay 6 feet apart when we shop. Elderly people are only allowed in the grocery store between 7 and 8 in the morning. There are police officers or guardians at the door of the groceries so that all these rules are respected. Everything is closed except groceries and drug stores. That's it. We have been in total lock down like this for almost 5 weeks now which is way before New York announced it would too... and the numbers here are still going up and will continu to go up for the next two weeks or so as per the predictions of our health department. So that's almost 2 months of covid going up without reaching it's peak -even with all that we do, it keeps climbing-. NY has been in lock down since march the 23th. I highly doubt that NY has reached it's plateau. I hope it's the case... but I highly doubt it.

Humor is not synonymous with lack of care, or disrespect. Often quite the opposite. Humor is never as important as in our darkest times, and its "nature" usually adapts to the circumstance.
Some times humor is all we have, to induce a small, temporary crack and silver lining of relief in the walls of fear and death that close in - when we spend our days staring into a dark abyss.
Ask a funeral director or grave digger. An ER priest or surgeon. A grief counselor. Ask them what if any place, humor has in the dark. In suffering, sorrow, despair and death. In piercing the veil of tears and fears. You might be surprised by what they have to share. Or at the very least, enlightened.

It could, and I hate to say it, it could flatten for another two weeks that is unknown territory were in now.
New Yorkers, Americans, worldians. There's been a flattening, dip and days later spike, coming at intervals. We see this regionally, nationally and globally. These phenomena are delayed _reportings_ during the weekends (compare the graphs and numbers with a calendar if you're sceptical). We're likely gonna see a maxi-sized one like it, now during Easter. Please do not rush to conclusions if you see the numbers flat out or tank this week! Do not ease up on your social distancing, contagion hygiene etc! Whatever will be the developments this week, we will not fully know until a couple of days after Easter. Some places will be hit bad. Some worse. Some might actually stabiliize. Just stick by maximum distancing and hygiene until those vetting the accuracy of the reported numbers, have a chance to process them.
This also means, do not rush to panic, if and when there's a big, sudden spike in the numbers, the first day or two after Easter. This is the reporting catching up, not reflective of that day's numbers.

Why was the United States so unprepared for this? I thought countries have plans for handling pandemics long before they happen.
The US did prepare under George W Bush, stockpiling over million mask and other ppe equipment and medications. Much of it was deployed in 2009 (H1N1 swine flu) under obama orders, but never replenished. Welfare, social programs, obamacare, dreamers became more important.....kinda screwed the US in the long run.

Everyone needs to stop worshipping these politicians who couldn't care less about us and start listening to science. The U.S. is going through the exact same things that the Roman Empire was going through right before it collapsed. But people are too concerned about fighting over stupid pointless party identities to put real effort, cooperation, and brain power into saving their country and people's lives.
@@wendysgarden4283 Im not gonna argue that trump didn't have a chance to restock our pandemic reserve nor that he shut down that specfic office, because its true....Just pointing out/ responding to the intial post....We did have a huge national reserve, it was used up in 2009 and never replenished....its why we get reports of the mask left from the national reserve going out and being expired... Big Govt sucks, and people need to stop "depending" and hold belief that we can rely on it as a saftey net.

yes. They aren't letting loved ones touch the body, I believe. And funeral workers become critical workers at risk, just like nurses or grocery store clerks.

whichever they want so far--cremation or burial. At some point, in some crowded nations, you'll see big pyres of many bodies. There are mass graves already, even in countries that would surprise you, though they say they'll dig up and rebury those dead people with more ritual when this is all over.
