@svenm sandity It was never perfect but it did work before about 1990. I grew up in a poor rural area of the US. My family were a hardscrabble farmers. But, in the 1980's was able to go to university, with Pell Grants, could work a part time minimum wage job that was enough to pay my expenses. Made some stupid mistakes, one of them was getting married. When I fled my abusive ex husband with the clothes on my back, I was able to get government assistance for housing, counseling, and get back in school to finish my education, and have a pretty successful life. I don't believe that the out come would be possible for some one in a similar situation today.

Yes. Coronavirus evolved in this country and Trump and his people were covering it up to make money. First in 2018 they said COVID-19 was the flu. Then when the flu season ended they said people were dying from vaping, but it was COVID-19. CDC and tump people started buying Altria stock and pharma sock for companies that made nicotine replacements. They then started going for a 6 month flavor ban to push vape shops and manufacturers out of business, thus increasing Juuls market share. That would push up the share price making them big money. The CDC director was pushed out over it, but it continued.
Also anti-smoking groups who were angry about vaping getting people to quit smoking joined in, as their money comes from tobacco sales. You can look into the Master Settlement Agreement for that one.
It gets worse than that, but I'll spare you more details, but this virus could have been stopped a year and a half ago when it wasn't very contagious.

Also : If those supplies are already in the stockpile, WE have already paid for them - why the re-sale, if they're already paid for with tax-payer money?
Answer : Profits, and you can probably bank on those profits being "connected". It's like watching an overused movie plot play out in real-life.
Contrarily, the answer is simply "Capitalism brah". It's essentially the same as publicizing (or socializing) expenses - in this case, our taxes paying for the supply - and then privatizing the profits - in this case, the supply which we paid for already, being used to make us pay AGAIN, so that those handling them can make more money. Long term : Shuffling tax money into the hands of a few (relative to number of people working to pay taxes). At the very least, it's a way to pay them for their efforts? But probably vastly overpaying them, which is sort of America's version of "Capitalism" business as usual, if we're going to be honest about it.

I agree that this is not the way to do things and it is immoral. I also agree that a capitalist based system of running a society is best. Rules are none the less required and some socially shared costs are as well. This being said, realize that what Trump is doing with these masks is capitalism at it's purest and most of us can see that despite that it is wrong. Time to reexamine some points of view and recognize that the best path is somewhere down the middle.
