We use to call it the Bible Belt. They must reference scripture to find governance for all. In that COVID-19, facemask, ventilator, nor social distancing are not found in either Testament it shall be ignored. In Denmark, where we have the spread under control, it is more or less how we're handling it. You can't meet more than 10 people at a time, non-healthcare public facilities (excepts of recycling stations), and tourist attractions, tanning, hair, and tattoo shop, sports facilities, nightclubs, bars, places of worship are closed, we have two meters of distancing (about 6 feet), restaurants can only do take away - but nobody's wearing masks, we haven't tested very extensively. People can still go to shops, go outside, visit family, rent a summer cottage. We had a shortage of hand sanitisers - but we make a lot booze, so there's no shortage of that anymore - we'll gradually roll back quarantine measures after Easter starting with the children, so schools and kindergartens will open in shifts. We've been on lock down since the 13th of May. It has worked!
And now it has just be announced that senior high school students will be going back to school too after Easter 🐰

Ok here's the truth (not saying it's right or wrong but why). I had a crazy job in the military, have had some research jobs and currently work as an engineer so I'm probably as qualified to make up an answer as any politician:
1. Population Density - Some areas like SC are lower in population, so they would issue a stay at home order far later (NY city alone has 65 times more cases than the whole state of SC right now). There's a huge lag so their wave of illness will come in 4-8 weeks and get very bad. This virus will cycle through large cities quickly and still be working its way through rural areas into the Fall, if not 2021. It makes sense that different states would react differently. Otherwise, we're all just staying home for 2 weeks and delaying the spread of a mass virus onset by 2 weeks.
2. Economics - Economics must be accounted for. Millions of Americans rely on an economy chugging along - orphans, the homeless, shelters, soup kitchens - all currently under strain as no donations/funds come in and all activity grinds to a halt. This creates further illness and problems as everyone hoards supplies and money. Long enough without people in work and infrastructure will begin to deplete and fail (Example: you're only still at home because people are still working, supplying the stores, and you able to get what you need - for now).
3. Percentages - 50 million people die a year (about 1 million a week) on our planet. We're just desensitized to the deaths from cancer, car wrecks, etc. So is the virus really a drop in the bucket yet? Not really. Could it be? If we aren't careful. From Jan 1 to Apr 1 (25% of the year) the virus is responsible for .0014% of deaths to occur this year. Not saying it wont get out of hand, but right now, 35 out of 1000 are getting sick and 14 out of 10,000 are passing away. Yet it is indeed wrecking the economy and may put millions in debt, out of business or in a homeless situation. It's a roll of the dice.
4. Politics - lying has been a science since the dawn of man. When to, how to, what about, for what reason and in what areas. Communists are masters of disinformation and Democracy's are masters of repression. It's a common way to deal with problems. You do this with your husband if you overspent a little on something you maybe both agreed should be discussed. You do this with your wife when a girl gives you eyes and you don't mention it because you don't want to start trouble. You do this with your kids when the Oreo's actually do still exist and are hiding to meet you later after bed time. You do this when you make a stupid mistake and you've learned your lesson but really don't want to have to explain to your parents.
5. Magnitude - their scale is out of balance. You see fraud as a politician taking a kick back, not a policeman giving his kid a ride because it's cool. Both are morally wrong and rob the tax payers. We (the common person) take little shortcuts, take advantage of little things every day. We print personal things at work on 3 sheets of paper, we talk our way out of ticket when we were caught dead to rights, we take that extra piece or part when we could really allow someone else to have it. It's all the same, it's just their world is on such a larger scale, we see the little shortcut as a horrific crime. The scale of their problems and the issues of the people become more misaligned with the population as it grows.

@@StyvynWayne Yep, Ohio isn't doing much besides closing all schools, ordering almost everyone to stay at home, closing nonessential businesses, restricting businesses that are allowed to be open, forbidding gatherings outside the home, and adapting those orders as we learn more. Not to mention being one of the first states to do so. You're right, we're not doing much here.

Dewine literally said that we should not be going to the stores, restaurants, or pharmacies. For the next two weeks.
We should be sheltering in place. If people are out and non essential. And they are caught they are being charged with misdemeanor.
We have been told for weeks now. To not visit with family. To play sports together or get in groups of more than 10. Playgrounds have been closed.

beverly allison the problem started weeks ago but the issue is only marginally being addressed now, I live on one of the big three lakes, granted I don’t c it all, but if it’s anything like where I live, the “recreating”, whatever that is, is a lot of people’s way to vent, crowding onto a boat with different families, then when the weekends over, back home! These people think because we live in S.C., we need the governor to tell us to stay at home...lol. Like we don't know how viruses spread. We've already been social distancing from everyone for almost a month, way before the governor's announcement. The only people who are "visiting" family are people that are caretakers of elderly family members that don't drive and need groceries or meds brought to them. No one is recreating outdoors in large groups here. People ARE recreating outdoors within their own yards with their own children. For Pete's sake, it's spring! Who wants to sit inside all day..lol. Steven Hershberger - more importantly they need to distinguish infected and non-infected and keeping the two groups separated for as long as possible. The longer the separation, the lower the peak and lower the peak demand for both doctors and ventilators.

Darren Hemingway - You could also isolate the vulnerable people for two weeks while everyone else spreads it around deliberately and develops immunity, thus removing the vast majority of the population from the pool of potential carriers. It would take two weeks.

Steven Hershberger - who is vulnerable? We don't know! I am currently in the UK and so far the youngest reported death has been 5 yrs old, no underlying issues. How long does the patient remain infectious? We don't know! It's at least up to three weeks (up to two weeks asymptomatic and one week ill) but how long after illness will the patient keep shedding the virus? We presume that once symptoms disappear patient is clear, but data is still vague. That means that people who have cleared the virus still cannot mix with non-infected. It's still not apparent if having covid19 offers any protection against reinfection. The only sure policy is strict social distancing everyone for a significant period of time (months not weeks - UK is currently working on a 12 week isolation presumption)
