Don't ignore the symbolism: A RED skirt (it could have been blue), a dove of peace. It's a brilliant, well-chosen message. Classy!

She didn’t make this performance about her with a bunch of runs and improv notes. She sang the song with a little style while also being respectful of the original. She wore a tasteful dress, she gestured to the flag as a sign of respect. One of the best anthem performances I have ever seen

About twice a century I feel so proud (lucky) to be American, where the likes of Gaga can exist and thrive.
She looked nervous coming down the stairs but clearly gathered herself at the microphone and sang so powerfully. Turning to the flag made tears come to my eyes.

@@dimitrifranck I am not American but in reality the order of things is that you are first human, then born in a country (e.g. America). So being American most times happens before you learn a language or choose a religion. I don't see loving your country of birth (or immigration) as idolatry. In fact I dare say if you rely on the bible requirement to pray for the land of your birth and its leaders because in their prosperity you will prosper, I think its a requirement to love your country deeply.

I’m a retired Portuguese-American now living in Portugal and the people in the cafe where I watched this were crying. They are happy for America.
She seemed so genuinely moved to be there. She hit all the right notes from her amazing performance, to her reverence, fashion, and emotion. She was there to create and be part of A SHARED moment, not to be “THE” moment. This might be the most important gig she ever played. I felt like I could see her inner little girl, going OMG, I get to be part of this historical, important ceremony. Well done, Stefani!

I agree with you completely. It just boggles my mind how many people are totally incapable of seeing and hearing the sincerity and artistry of her performance. Her own experience of awe and appreciation for this historical moment in the life of this country was inspiring. Her rendition of a song we've heard a million times reached out beyond her immediate audience and touched the hearts of so many people who love democracy. It was like hearing the national anthem for the first time.
