@@martykopka The other countries also do not have enough PPE but their leaders say they don't have enough and have efforts to secure as much as possible while asking domestic manufacturers to produce what they can and offering them assistance in doing so. What's happening in the US... Whining over whether or not it's the State Governor's responsibilities, not telling the military where to ship the available ventilators despite specific requests as to where they should be shipping them and military labs being idle despite requests by the military for the Whitehouse to inform the States to use them for tests. Note the many of the ventilators in the Federal stores are non-functional as the Whitehouse had canceled the maintenance contract a couple of years ago.
Note that the Ventilators that the Whitehouse supposedly commanded GM to manufacture are full blown complicated multi-pirpose ventilators while other countries are asking for simplified ventilators specifically for the COVID-19 crisis that can be produced more quickly as well as ramping up production of existing ventilator devices.
Have you ever tried to do anything medical in a biological warfare suit? It does not work, take that from a nurse with the experience.

The Chinese had it's whole population wearing facemasks by around January 20th, and the benefits of this in slowing down the spread were known almost immediately back then. Why is this now suddenly being presented as new information in the States? It bewilders me how slow the US has been in learning the lessons from other countries.

Retired ER doc here to say that ventilator availability never factored into a decision of whether to intubate in 35+ years of practice. The endotracheal tube was placed when the clinical conditions warranted. A tech or an aide would manually ventilate the patient while someone else hooked up the ventilator, or went to get one. But now we are projected not to have enough machines. (Manual ventilation for weeks is not feasible due to complex ventilation management issues.) So what do doctors do now? I suggest that everyone’s lives be saved initially, intubate anyone who needs it, start manual ventilation and then contact Jared Kushner when they can’t find a machine. We need to get real on this response.

The first thing that needs to be done is getting ER first responders adequate PPE. Simultaneously you need to set up US Army style field decontamination sites at every hospital, this is to be set up to decontaminate the ER personnel as a preparation for removal of PPE when they are exiting the theater of operations. If you don't do this and the ER personnel go down then the entire nation goes down. This is the biggest threat to National Security that has ever faced the nation.

Need it for healthcare workers. Workers get right in the person's space to intubate, clean, and care for ventilated patient who has been placed in a coma to keep him or her on ventilator. Will have to do this several times a day for two weeks for each patient. Also has to clean and feed patient. Repeated exposure to virus. More virus, more exposure, more chance of getting virus. The N95 has filtration that is better to help keep out virus. Health care workers need them more than others.
The only thing you can ask for is PPE for the hospitals and medical centers and care giving facilities.

Derek, for years I have been explaining to people what is going on.
